Blown headlight globe

I have had this irritating problem for two weeks now. One headlight globe on dim is not working. I have gone all over to try and find a replacement but no luck. There are three retaining clips (lugs) at the back of the globe and on all the replacements i find the bottom two don't line up! Can i cut the two little metal "lugs" off? Will it make a difference? The original globe is a 12v / 45w globe and the closest fitting replacement is 12v / 55w. Will it make a difference or will it cause future electrical problems? Please help! :pissed:

Nope, you're find doing that. In fact, that's what most people do for replacement bulbs. Believe there is a thread on that somewhere. You should only need to bend one lug back. The other two should fit in fine.

Do you also find it hard to find replacement globes?

Yippee! I did it! Took a side cutters to the globe and carefully cut off both the smaller bottom lugs. It fits in, doesn't move around and works perfectly! I went to the Honda agents to price a new one. They could order one for R253,00 each! I got one from the local car accessories shop for R18,00! Sorry Honda dealer!

Is your bike a US import? European bikes all came with 55w60 (normal) H4 bulbs.

To be completely accurate, cutting off the tabs on a regular H4 and using an adapter ring on a US-spec VFR800Fi headlamp result in slightly off headlight aim or focus. It's not very noticeable, though...especially if you don't ride much at night!

I dont even cut 'em off. I just bend them over.

Ciao,

I suspect it's an import because the Honda dealer seemed to think so beacause of the odd size globes.

Want to know for sure? In the bike's VIN, what is the number/letter that comes after the "RC46"?

what i did was got the H4 bulb (bent the lower tabs) then re-adjust headlight position, nothing more then 20 min of work and save $20 per bulb and have high intensity headlights w/ no effect to the bike XD

Is that the whole frame number? If so, you've probably got a Japan-market bike. All ROW VFR800s had 17-digit VINs, using an internationally standard format. J-spec bikes also used funny headlamp sizes (in addition to North American bikes), so that makes sense. Unfortunately, J-spec bikes were generally limited to 77BHP, though that may have changed by the time the VFR800Fi was released. Japan had changed its bike licensing laws in the late 1990s (which is why the 400cc race-rep market crashed), which allowed more people to ride bigger bikes, so they may have changed the power limits as well. (The J-spec RC30 and the iconic NR were also restricted to 77BHP...)

Well, I'd have more, but I've got no place to put them!
