Well another Bone head move

Well I parked the bike in a hurry yesterday as I ran into my cabin.

I got 3 steps away and I heard this god awfull "Crunplopp".

I turned around and saw my beloved 1995 VFR 750 laying on it's left side an apparent victim of stupiditis hitting its owner.

So the damage: 1 busted LH Mirror, 1 slightly bent clutch lever, 1 cracked LH cowl (expensive but fixable)

So after straining to get the bike back up on its wheels, I rolled it to its parking stop and completely forgot what I was in a hurry for.

So this morning I go to start it and it really doesn't want to start. The starter chugged for a bit and stopped. I put the bike in gear and moved it back and forth a bit then finally got it started.

Once running it is chugging at low idle (~700 RPM) and will eventually die. When I take it on the street it seems to run well. until idle time. I also smell gas at idle.

So me thinks I may have a carb issue now. Stuck float bowl or something like that.

Any ideas or comments (about the bike that is, my pride is pretty well shot at this point),

ME TOO! >>> sort of.<<< I let my '97 get away from me yesterday for the second time. God must love me because BOTH times have been in my garage and my cabinets saved it both times. No damage, except for the bar marks on the drawer faces. Good Lord, I'm lucky. Not sure about your idle issue but with this site, it won't be long and we'll both know what's up.

Happens to the best of us. Don't have any good suggestions about it's rough running. Could be the body work as pinch or disconnected one of your vacume lines. Carbs would be my last guess as to the problem. Take the body work off and trace all your vacum lines and wire connections. Good luck.

I would think that gas got in a few places it normally doesn't when it was on it's side and will clean out once you ride it some! :mellow:

Sorry about the downed bike, but don't feel too bad. As others said, it's happened to many of us. I've dropped my VFR 3 times now, including last weekend when the bike and I fell over while getting on it. :ohmy:

Either a float bowl got stuck when it tipped over, or you're not getting enough fuel. Does the exhaust seem lean or rich?

try and ride it round the block (in case you have to push her home...) a bit more and see if she still dies.
Try fiddling with the idle knob (left side low near shifter).

Exhaust seems rich to me.. and it did before the tip over too.

Always wondered if I needed to clean the carbs. Heck the bike is a 1995 and only had 8500 miles on it when I bought it about 6 months ago so I imagine there was quite a bit of sitting around.

There can be a lot of brownish like sludge that often accumulates at the bottom of carb bowls. It almost seems to be a natural by-product of gas and it is probably the near microscopic pieces of rust from the tank that the filter passes. For the most part it gets pretty hard and stays put at the bottom of the bowls but when a tip over occurs, enough can break free to get into the pilot jet circuits which govern the idle.

I had a Yamaha Virago back when and that happened to me twice even though I was able to catch the bike and just ease it to the ground. It did get horizontal and that was enough to clog the pilots.

On that bike I could take out the pilot jet screws and force inject, using the red nozzle on a spray can of carb cleaner, a good solid spray that blew out the junk and made all well again.

Well the idle knob seems to have done wonders.. that and a little trip around the block.

I gave the knob about a 1/4 turn and everything returned to normal.... well except for the cracked fairing and the busted mirror.

Semi-dropped my 95 last year in the garage last year too. I thought the sidestand was deployed so I leaned it to park and it just kept going........ I tried my best to push it back up in the middle of the fall, but you know how that goes. I heard cracking sounds as the bike met the 4 foot tall steel tool box about 2 feet away from the left side of my bike, with me cursing all the way. I was so relieved when I pulled the bike back up and found out the only thing hit and cracked was the year old DB Zero Gravity screen and not a scratch on the bike. I guess that was the reason I retained the OEM screen and polished it back to new condition a few months before.... :biggrin: ,,,,Off with the (cracked) new and on with the old!....
Maybe I should buy another DB screen in case I might have another garage boo boo........

I don't mean to hijack the thread, bout how do you like your DB on your 4th gen? I've got a '97 with the stock screen and am looking for something that gives more protection at 'touring' speeds (+75mph). I'm 5'6" tall.

Isn't it amazing all of the creative cuss words that come out during times like these.

Debating on replacing the cracked fairing now... crack isn't that bad. Maybe I need to get the DB windshield as insurance against another rectally induced brain fart... I seem to have a lot of those lately.
