What causes this?

I put 10,000 miles on these Pilot Road 2's before taking them off. As you can see, towards the end of their life the rear edge of the treads started to raise up, and the front edge kind of wore down.. Is this caused by my suspension not being set up properly? If so, is this something I can adjust on a stock suspension?

Has anyone else seen this?

Did I just ride with too low of air pressure for awhile?

I think it is normal for a tyre at the end of its life, due to the wear occuring during cornering. If I understand things correctly, the tyre deflects and changes shape under side loads and this wear is a result from that.

Ten Thousand Miles? Holy crap.. if you go that far on one tire you are doing waaaay better than average. Dont touch a thing, it might get worse  (just kidding) ---- I only get half that on a front.

It is normal. I cant believe you get that mileage. I get 3k from regular powers.

Thats how all my tires look after a few miles in the twisties. Im always on the throttle comin out of a corner and I think its because of that. I also agree if you get that many miles out of a tire leave it alone!
I barely get 5000 if its cool out.

I agree with Timmy.... But I also think the pattern on the PR2 is to held accountable,as I didn't have this problem with the PR, but I do have the same problem with the PR2.

i agree with everyone, that if you get 10k, and you dont slide around, no worries. BUT, trailing edge flaring like that is an indication of too LITTLE rebound damping. i took mine off a while ago, but i dont believe you have any adjustment except preload.

I do always throttle out of corners, it's about the only time I'm hard on the throttle, actually.

That's the information I was looking for, thanks! I knew there was a reason I put this in the suspension forum and not tires...

I agree with TC on this as well. You would be amazed at what one little adjustment can do regarding wear. Different tires could show different wear patterns if the suspension is left alone. The suspension on the biike should be set to the tire that it is running on. It doesn't make that much difference on the street (usually), but you can see good bits of difference on the track....which is where i learned that it was rebound that causes this flaring.

The rear shock does have rebound adjustment. Turn a screw one way for harder, another way for softer. How far do I want to turn it as a starting point?

Yours doesn't look as bad as mine, and he said you need to go harder(which "IS" CW)..... So I'd just move it cw about 2 to 3 minutes (as on a clock)............
These are my notes for my bike. just a reference....
Rear - 1 turn (ccw) F/seat (compression dampner)then went 1/8 turn(cw)back towards seat

I think it's typical wear from acceleration out of the corners while on the sides of the tires, the rubber is twisted between the tread blocks causing this edge feathering IMO!
Lower pressures can also exaggerate this situation by allowing the tire carcass to flex more.

That's exactly what my PR2's look like toward the end of their life. I'm glad someone else is getting 10k out of a set of PR2's so I don't feel like I'm babying my bike too much.

All my Michelin tires have looked like that , hence my switch to metz without an issue. As much as I have read the glowing reviews on the newsest Michelins I wont switch back .....

Not on the PR2s but I do on the Roadsmart and Angel ST. Like Turltecreec metniosn I've too haerd it has to do with too little rebound damping. Maybe I'll set the shcok a little quicker but it isnt anything I worry about. Here is a pic of that shows a comparison between the last tires I used (the Angels are still fresh).

Okay, so that's 6 votes for normal/accelerating out of corners/don't worry about it VS. 2 votes for too little rebound damping.

Anyone else have any insight?

Didn't there used to be a video on here where a suspension pro showed all different types of wear and what they mean? (didn't see it in a search, but might not have been looking for the right keywords).
