Steering Stems

Hiyas...
Still at the $$$ stage of Frankorising my 98.

I ask coz I'm having trouble fitting my Vortex (CBR929) upper.
Basically, the top triple does not fit on the stem (bout 1mm too tight)
I was told the 929 and 954 upper triples were the same and according to the Vortex website it is.

Or is this a SP2 stem? Or is it some other brand of stem.
There are figures cast: 62023 & 5-2 & 41J

Looking at some of the member's pics, it doesn't even look like the SP clamp.
The top section of thread is about 26mm dia.
You guessed it, the Vortex triple is 25mm dia.
Also note the small flattened section between the stops... ain't seen that either.

Stick a magnet to the stem. SP1's are steel. SP2's are aluminium. It's not a SP1 by the looks of it..

That looks like an SP2 to me. Not fitting a 929 upper clamp is also a sure sign that it's a later model RC51 part.

Rusty I used your pic as reference.
The stem is not magnetic.

Even after checking out SP2 lowers, it don't look like them either.

The SP2 has a larger diameter steering stem, and takes a different bearing. That makes it too large to fit into the VFR's frame.

The Sp1 lower bearing should be 35x55x14. So if the bottom part of your stem is larger than 35mm, you've got an Sp2 piece.

The lower dia of the stem is 30mm :blink:
It's beginning to sound like it's neither.
You will also note that the clamping bolts are at different angles to both SP1 or 2.

I think we are fairly sure it is not SP1.... ****!!!!

Just got home from work. I was looking at other pictures. That is not a SP1 or the SP2 lower. Have no clue as to what bike that come from.

The exchange rate has made it even sweeter.
This item was for sale on a US forum.

I find my biggest trouble is finding someone who ships to Oz.

Anyway, I'm baffled... emails been sent.

heres my question.. do you have the fork tubes? and do they fit? is your frame ready? will it fit? just try it. some things can be mixxed and matched.. hope this is one of them for your sake. :fing02:

Stock forks are still insitu.
No forks yet.
I have rigged up some PVC piping.
It appears fine forkwise, it will even line up with the stem.
The idea of going SP1 steering stem was to eliminate any chance of it not fitting.
Even if the stem fits the frame, I would have to drill and machine the upper triple for fitment.
Not something I had planned.

Still would like to know what this is.

umm. no..
you need a new top clap too.. plain and simple the rc51 forks are usd..

I shouldn't need a new upper, it's a tried and true method of several memebers here.

you telling me people have machined out the upper clamp from 43 mm to 54mm and not have snap at the slightest bump? the stock clamp is pretty thin. i have seen quite a few cracked.. i broke my own when i tapped a car that did a panic stop in front of me.

No, not the clamp... the centre hole on the upper.
I was just suggesting "one" could make it fit but I wanted minimal machining on any parts.

Does anyone know the SP1 stem length :comp13:

Seriously, if it were long enough and the threads matched and all aligned in the frame and with the world, and internets...
I don't think I could put a drill to the vortex.

I just want my SP, C baked beans and spaghetti for hungry....i mean my SP1.

Just a correction, SP1's are aluminum stems, SP2's are steel.

That doesn't look to be a Honda unit, the casting is completely different, so, I'd be concerned with offset and fork-fork distance and trying to match those dims to the RC wheel I assume you're using.

Get that thing boxed up & sent back to where ever it came from. If you need help sourcing parts in the states, let me know. I have a pile of stuff sitting in my garage right now that's earmarked for oz-land.

Cheers Seb, got any VFR1200 bars? SP2 forks? I'm alittle hesitant to return the item yet. Shame he doesn't live down the road... got an address though.
Looking at your fork excel spreadsheet there's 2mm difference with the fork centres = fail. That excel doc has been a bible mate. Pretty sure I've added some values to it too.

I can't take credit for starting that spreadsheet - that was VFR800R's doing. I've been adding to my copy whenever I can though! it is handy for sure! :fing02:

Ahhh correction then, thanks to VFR800R.
I do have the 51 wheel coming.
I guess to make things simple I'll stick with 51 forks too.
But I was keen on a C14 set, ZX12 or Busa, just no info came back to be certain about spacing etc.
Kawasaki wheels are nice though, would match an 8 spoker.

Got in contact with the seller, he's gonna do right he says, but still waiting.

Got some measurements for the VFR1200 bars and I'm pretty certain they will work with minimal clearance issues.

Time will tell... oh and money.

Money returned, but I sent it again as he's found me one with even less mileage and free postage.
Stand up bloke, spoke a bit on the phone, I'm sure a few here would know him.

The wheel is puurrfect... I'll get a weight soon.
