I thought a new thread was in order to post this years updates, a newer front end and finishing the body work. First the front end - I picked up a complete '91 FZR1000 set up, mainly because the fork length was managable and I read the stearing lock to lock wasn't too bad. I pressed out the steering stems and swapped them friday (I dont weld, so that will get farmed out this week) and put it together for a 'dry fit'. The front is approximately 1" lower, and the steering lock isn't as bad as I first thought. I removed the rubber bushings on the radiator to move it back a little, and I remeber Kel saying the VF750 rad is slightly narrower. But overall I think it will work.
Kel - did you swap your radiator out, and if so can you tell me the thickness?

I still have to machine the upper clamp where the stem bolts in, it has a raised area under neath that makes the stack up too tall for all the hardware. I dont like the 3 spoke rim, but can't wait to see how braking and handling changes!

Good work!

Looks good. I noticed it's an 85 but you have 86 headlights. Did you do the mod? What all does it take and how much of a pain is it. I love the duals better than the single headlight.

The biggest problem was finding one. The mod is pretty straight forward - remove (2) upper tabs on the fairing where the single headlight grill bolts up, you will need to make some adaptor brakets for the new light, and splice into the light wiring. I bought an older harness peice from another vfr to wire mine in. There are a few threads, and let me know if you decide to do it and I can post a few pics -

I originally had a kF rad on backwards which allowed a little more room but still not enough so I dropped the R's rad down and dug into the frame a little. Still not enough in my book. What's the offset of the FZR's forks?

31mm, and I beleive the old kR was ~50mm. The other dimension to think about is the CTC of the tubes. I have that number at home and will publish it, but from memory it is a solid 60mm wider. I'll let you know.
Do you happen to know the kF's rad dimensions?

Thanks for the info. It's a mod I'm very interested in but I'm in the Indian Ocean until November so wrench time won't be for a while.

I think my RC51's are 30mm so the offsets are the same. Prepare to hate the steering lock. I scrounged every mm of steering travel I could and it still stinks. You get used to it but plan on 10 point turns in the driveway. The radiator is not the problem. I got mine completely out of the way so the forks hit the frame, I even took some out of the frame but the end product is the same, El Stinko slow speed turning. These frames need lots more offset.

Glad to see you did not sell the 1KR... I saw it on Ebay and really enjoyed many of your mods.

Good luck.

I am prepared - just for completeness, the FZR tube CTC is 229mm. I was expecting worse, but I will stick with the stock rad for now...

Just in case anyone is following along - I got the front end nearly complete. I machined the FZR upper triple to remove the key, as it would have required a lot of futzing with to make work right and I didn't like the way it was looking. I am relocating the key the the left side under the inner cowling, about where the right side tool box is. The lighted gauges just required a 2" strap and bolt inbetween the triple and the clip ons. All in all this was a very straight forward swap! I believe I will need to swap the fork springs, but I will wait for a test ride to see. The issues left on the front are the speedo cable - I have the FZR drive unit on the wheel, and I will get its cable to see if I can braze the VFKR cable to it - and the bracket for the master cylinder (coming).

Just to have something quantitative, I compared the turning radius to my '00 VFR in the garage, starting at the same point locked the wheel to the right and measured where they ended up (very scientific...). The VFR is roughly 12' and the VFKR is ~15.5'. I guess my expectations were to have a much worse radius, because I am not that disappointed with it. I should have measured the stocker to see what it was, but it does seem too bad. Anyone with the stock front end and a tape measure out there?

So on to the body work!

Glad to see you getting some work done.

+1, keep that ball rolling!

I'm following the build, looking good. :fing02:

Good work there, Unbalanced. Do tell, is the "hole" beneath the head light the air intake? really looks cool!
#18
Actually, that hole feeds cool air to the upper radiator. There are 2 on this bike, and one is in the upper fairing.

Man I like the idea of a front end update on the 1KR.

Enjoying the build.

Looks great .... !!

finally something to post - I got the 4-1 finished and installed, found a Yoshimura TRS muffler. I was going to have a mid pipe made, but in the mean time I thought I would play around with the Hindle mid pipe - and I like it! I was able to heat and bend it up enough that it follows the lines of the tail well. I made a hanger, but didn't get any pics yet
I HAD to fire her up and it sounds goood. I think I still have carb issues, it seems to still 'hang up' a little coming down off throttle. I'll post a video when I get a chance...
