Hi, my name is Lance and I am new to the site and new to the interceptor. Here's my story. I do a lot of trading on craigslist and came across an 85 VF1000R parts bike with clear title for trade and I know the rarity and know they are legendary so I offered my Cub Cadet riding mower as trade. He accepted. It is basically a roller with a good engine. Shows excelent compression! the guy sold all the body work and tank and exhaust, so I was freaking out on the money and work it will take to restore it. I will add pictures later.

Then, as fate has it I looked at ebay the other night and I bid on a real clean VF1000F that is complete, but the engine and tranny were removed from the bike. I was the lucky winner of this clean example! Now I have everything I need to complete a classic. I know it is the same frame as the 85, but is there any modifications I will need to make to make the swap? I also read the breaking system is better?

I have been doing a lot of reading on the differences I still have the VF1000F motor, only has 14,000 miles. The guy I bought from said it was kicking out of 2nd gear, but proceded to dismantle the entire motor. I will probaly keep and rebuild the original motor, just for value purposes. Or, am I making a mistake by swapping to the VF1000R motor?

Man I am so excited I can't see streight, kind of like when you meet that hot single babe for the first time! Any advice would be helpful.

Also, I will have VF1000R parts available and will offer a CLEAR TITLED ROLLING CHASSY available now. Make me an offer!

Do a search on here for a thread by VF1000RS, he was in process of this motor swap. The frames are NOT the same, it's a bit of work to swap motors, he was doing some cutting and welding...

Great project though! :fing02:

Edit: Here it is..

Thanks VFRcapn, That thread pretty much covers it .I knew there would be a hitch, but not so much welding. Here is my question to you. That 84 F is really clean, Is the extra horsepower of the R motor worth all the modification? I'm thinking it will kill the value and I may be better off keeping the 84 original and doing the oil mods and rebuilding the motor and tranny. Then I can keep looking for another R bike to merge with my roller. I don't know.

Do you know(or anyone) if the transmission from the 85 VF1000R will work on an 84 VF1000F motor without modification? Or with? Or, How about the body and controls and electrical from the F transfer to the R frame and motor?

I wouldn't attempt it, I don't have the welding skills for all that. The F and R motors are within 10hp of each other but the F bike is 40 or 50lbs less than the R.

I tried an R tranny in an F motor and it didn't work. I could get it in but once I put the cases back together, it wouldn't spin. The R has a few larger components.

The R motor uses 1 black box. for ignition while the F uses 2. I wouldn't try swapping them.

The F has different mounting points for the body work than the R but anything is possible.

[Thanks for the advise Kel, I guess my best option is rebuilding the F motor and tranny. Now have to figure out what to do with the VF1000R bike. Thought for sure there would be some swapable parts.
