Ihave a 1993 with 35,000 KM (21,000 miles) and I am wondering when I should check the valve clearances. Please let me knw how far you have gone efore the valves needed to be adjusted.

It's not unusual for the valves to be out by the first 20k miles. The good news is, if they do need adjusting, they probably won't need adjusting again for another 30-40k miles (if even then). I've gone 65k without needing to adjust anything on my '96, but that doesn't mean you don't check them. You really don't want them getting out of spec; too far out can damage the engine.
My recommendation, if you're doing it yourself, is to support the thing so you can get the front wheel off, and pull the forks at the same time. ...they're almost certainly due to have the oil flushed and replaced, and pulling them (and lowering the radiator) makes doing the valves a pretty simple task (vs. trying to reach in around everything).
