97 vfr750 streetfighter project!

Finally getting started on her, got the front fairing mounts, gauges, and ignition switch removed today.  I'll post pics of that tomorrow, but here is what she was before I tore into the front end today.........

Its going to be a fun build, and my first bike build ever.  I've done a few cars, and fixed a few dirtbikes, but I've never built a custom bike....so here we go!   :bliss: Now I just have to decide what route I want to take with the build, I have so many ideas but deciding what to do is difficult.  I want it to be different, but simple.  I'm going to tackle keyless hidden ignition first.  

I made some brackets to raise the tail angle, but I can't decide if I want to do that or swap in a newer 919 tail or a newer cbr tail :lobby:   which one which one.  Because I really like the stock tail, except for the blunt ending on a flat boring tail light.  I'm open for opinions and ideas!  .................first order of business though is most definately to get her running.

Thanks!  Are there any specifics out there on tail swaps?  I looooooove r6 tails!  And I love cbr tails!  If you or anybody has knowledge to pass on lemme know!

good luck with the build , you prob have a idea in your head of what you want as a finished product but by the end of it it will be something else with added awesome , mine was spose to be a simple fighter build but nothing is simple in the fighter world prepare yourself for plenty of custom gear and doing it your self stuff , i love the r6 tails too and i reackon they wouldnt be to hard to fit just make up some adapting plates and your half way there (maybe) haha , good to see more fighters out there

ya know that's so true, the more I look and research parts, the more I find that I want to do..my list went from a few simple changes to a book of complicated ones haha.  I'm gonna soak it up for all it's worth and do everything I can.  The beautiful thing is is that I have no time limit so I can really focus on one thing at a time and perfect every detail.  You're project is awesome by the way, alot of what you're doing with yours has inspired my build   :fing02:

I'm so conflicted on what to do about the tail section....but I can worry about that later on because right now I need to get her running.  Reccomnedations on batteries?
       And I am attempting to by pass my ignition and going keyless and so far all I have managed to do is remove the front fairing mount and gagues...which the mounting bolts were broken from  them so they were just hanging there.

There are three wires coming off of the connector that went to the ignition switch, which had five.  The three wires were red, red with a black stripe, and blue with an orange stripe.  The two red ones are in the wiring diagram as the ignition switch itself, but the blue with the orange tracer isn't in the diagram which has me extemeley confused.  But I can't really do anything until I have a battery and new plugs.

Oh and by the way, if you ever do decide to remove your own ignition switch, please do remove the front fairing bracket, it makes it a thousand times easier...especially when the two bolts holding it in have had yellow lock tite put on them.

Removed the slipon d and d today and fabbed up some new brackets to lift the tail and got em installed.  Post pics soon.

Question for anyone with answers....in the attatchment there are three connectors towards the tail of the bike...anyone know what they are for?

There's the temporary bracket I made to raise my tail angle (2 of them).  And also, she runs...a lil rough but she runs.  Im going to have to clean the carb out I think to get her running eficiently.

Cleaned out the carbs ...lost a washer in the process...and wow.  After cleaning up the plugs, she had a little trouble starting but for the first time really running, made me all warm inside haha.  I've decided what tail I am going to go with this winter.  Im going to slap on a ducati 1098 tail.  I love the way they look and I think it would look good on the viffer.

The new gas tank looks amazing compared to the old beat up one.  I didn't wire up a push button start like I wanted too because I got impatient.  Just a few small parts and ill be able to put her on the road.

Wow it has been awhile since I last posted.  Here are the few updates...im waiting on my headlight unit to come in and trying to decide on which gauges that I'm going to go with.  I bought brake and clutch levers and installed them, along with a new headlight blinker switch...witch has me lost cuz my left blinker has a mind of its own and wont shutoff.

Thanks for the input...i have actually decided against that headlight due to one thing.  Tonight I am picking up and r6 subframe and undertail, and with it I am also getting the r6 headlight.  I have some fiberglass sittin around waitong to be used...so im sure everyone gets the idea :-) .  Needless to say I am very very excited!  Ill post pics as soon as I pick them up this afternoon.  I see what you mean about obi wan haha

Good work, I'm always partial to the round headlight for fighters (old Monsters, Hornets, Hawks), but you know what you like

I remember someone put a 1098 tail on their 4th gen it looked really good, I'll see if I can find it...

I love that!  Where does everyone seem to be hiding their coolant resevoir?...and ill tell you this: the stock wiring harness has an excessive amount of wiring that is tangled together and its annoying as all get out.  Heres the parts I bought yesterday..  You cant tell in the picture...but I will say this.  I went there expecting to pay 200 dollars (there's also a headlight not pictured that I got for 20 bucks) and left and had only paid 85 dollars.  The subframe is/was extremely bent.  I took it to work and hit it with the torch and bent it back the best I could without it being on the bike.  It is still slightly twisted but I am fairly confident I can fix that  when it is installed.  Ill have pictures of it shortly.

Wired up my 20 dollar headlight and got it installed...still have to take it off and figure out what to do with the dang wiring harness.  Any words of advice that you can give me would be great.

Your best bet with the wiring is to start chopping, you're going to end up with a lot of feet of extra wire that will be hard to conceal.  Just be careful with each cut and make sure you have a good connection when you join them, look it up on the internets but I think a good way to go is to twist them together and then solder it, then I like to use heat shrink tubing rather than electrical tape because its cleaner, but the tape should work well too

I ran my own switch for the brights and wired to the ignition switch for lows so theyre always on.  I wired the turns into the stock harness, but you are definately right, I have to start chopping.  Im not going to start chopping until I have gauges, and after theyre wired ill go samurai crazy.  Ive been soldering, heat shinking, and using tape.  Redundant I know haha.  Thanks for the tip its helped me in the right direction.

Alllllright, definately been awhile since my last update.  I've been doing some work lately on her and I've managed to do a few things that have jumped me forward a bit.  I found where to hide my wiring harness and not have had to severely cut into it, I hid it under the gas tank and under the intake inlet.  That also makes hooking up the ignition harness, kill switch, and the headlights easy to conceal also.  Now I just need to figure out how to squeeze the fuse box in there.  

I also got my new headlight set up wired to the switch, made brackets, and mounted them.  I am in the process of making my own mask/front fairing to go over the lights.

I also got the stock subframe removed and mocked up fitment of the r6 subframe...which comes nowhere even close to bolting to the stock mounts so I
Am trying to fab up some mounts at work today.  

Also if anyone wants the subframe I posted an add in the f/s section under parts.   Thanks for looking!

Oh man how could I forget to mention the weight difference between the stock subframe and the r6 sub frame!  Night and day difference.  In comparison the r6 subframe weighs almost nothing when compared to the stock one.  Id say its at least a 7 lb difference between the two.  Oh and here's a crappy pic of the headlights with no harness showing :-)

your getting there , i also was amazed in the weight of the stock tail , and even the front sub frame , im keen to weight the bike after im done see what kind of weight lose there was , keep up the good work

Thank you, its coming along slowly but shes gettin there.  I would definately like to weigh in when its done, after shedding the fairings and stays and bolder of a rear subframe id imagine a loss of close to 50 lbs.

Last nights effort..I mounted the coils to the radiator engine separator, ran ground wires for the coils, and I am now in the process of trying to shove the harness in there too.  It is an extremely EXTREMELY tight squeeze.  I just don't want the harness to interfere with air flow.

Tail is mounted and secured.  The brackets I made work, but I do not like the way they look.  More work to do there also.  The seat, if bolted to the stock points in the tail, sits about 2 inches too far back.  So im going to drill into the subframe and make a new mounting point for the seat so that it flushes up with the tank better.

I got the new to me rear brake levr assembly installed last night.  Now I just need to get brake fluid and bleed the system.  I also got the battery tray installed and got most of the rear harness tucked away.

I am a cf member too, I've got a lot of great ideas from there.  The front harness is a b@$%h to mess with.  I cut In to it pretty deep and its still massive.  It barely fits where I put it and I trimmed the hell out of it.  Have you decided on a new tail yet?  You wouldn't believe the weight difference, the vfr tail is so heavy compared to other tails.  The rear harness is much easier to hide when you get to that point.

  I'll be watching your build, hopefully we can help eachother out at times since its the same gen bike and we'll prolly run into similar issues.  

   A great project in progress to check out is hyofighter's 95 v4 project.  I refer to hisbuild ALOT when I need help or ideas.

No joke on the harness.  Think half the weight of the bike is in copper lol.  Urs painted yet?  Im rattle canning mine til dec or january and she's getting a fresh digital camp setup.

Just a suggestion......
Anytime you have the airbox and carbs removed from the bike, always stuff the intake openings with rags or paper towels to avoid dropping small parts into the engine.....You don't want to find out what happened to that missing small bolt, nut or washer when you first start up the engine again.......
