Mexico ideas

Mmmmk, this is how my brain works.  I haven't even completed my 2011 epic trip to NYC and Virginia Beach and I'm thinking of ideas for 2012.  The ol family situation has changed slightly and I may have more free time on my hands as well as more cash flow so I'm thinking of a 2 week or more trip next year.  Anyone in Mexico or who's been to Mexico wanna chime in with some ideas of places to go, do or see?  Any input is appreciated, unless it's stupid :goofy:

I have a story that's stupid AND outdated.

Just make sure you hit the bathroom before you get on line to cross the border coming home.

Please do not take this with any level of disrespect...

Stay the hell away from Mexico.  With all the drug violence...those guys don't care who they kill.  Americans already stick out like sore thumbs there and you will stick out even more going solo on a motorcycle.  I think I would feel safer sleeping on a street corner in downtown Detroit.

Lots of good roads and good people here...enjoy them.

All due respect but that's a wide brush of BS you're painting a huge place with.  Dan; it's all been said before; yes there are bad areas, but some are worth the ride. I mean REALLy worth it. I've been here 7 years now, and the score is;

1 Speeding fine. 4 sets of tires. The entire Pacific coast travelled from MAzatlan south, 5 states around Jalisco totally scouted, all its towns, booze and food spots, canyons and forests etc. etc. One rider loss from a risky pass. 4 major national events with 10k bikes in attendance. just check my gallery for more 1k word images.

I have enough resources to offer guided tours with truck backup and replacement bikes, local american-run hospital insurance deals, routes checked weekly. (I ride with 2 local sport touring groups).

A tus ordenes, I'll be here all year.

With all due respect to Mr. Superfreak, I'm glad you have had a incident free stay, but personally, having been to both places to "work", I felt safer in Pakistan.
PS: I was born and raised in Detroit, watched the 82nd Airborne do an 'airfield seizure' on the old Detroit airport when I was a kid. Went back last summer for a family funeral, the place is ...sad, very dangerous and sad.

Its a good forum with solid, factual information about this and many trips.
Its also a place where riders actually make the trip instead of talk about something they have very little or no information on.

See... this is the problem. I've been in a lot of places in the US and Canada, and would never say that all of the US is Detroit, nor that all of Canada is Downsview. The 3 countries are kinda large dontcha know?

Last Sunday our route took us 300kms through some of the best scenery, we had fantastic food in a tiny place run by a family who grow their own produce right next to the restaurant, and we crossed areas with million dollar homes. It was not just some gringo gulch or narco palaces, it was Sayula, Ajijic, Tapalpa, Mazamitla. Places that entrepreneurs call home. My former boss (Mitsu dealership) has a home in Mazamitla and roams the town on horseback, I have Paisan Canuck friends in Ajijic, my nephew owns a cottage in Tapalpa, he hires local people who make crafts that he exports. We all work here and have vested long term interests and no one is running for the border like our brothers sadly have to in places like Juarez, they'd all take great exception to such generalizations.
Anyways, this gets tiring.  Just ride where you feel safe man, and let everyone else ride.
Really unless someone stole your lunch in Jalisco you really can't talk about Jalisco or Zapopan (where I live). You're talking about the border most likely. Myself I would not go there either, but I am 900 kms from the border.

/edit; +1 on the ADV rider forum. A lot of them post lots of epic ride stories.

(taken in nearby Jocotepec, it was completely full of scooters, 3/4 of them with girls at the controls, fantastic).

Buddy of mine spent a couple weeks down there to finish up his bike trip. Didn't have a lick of trouble.

I traveled into Mexico in 2008.  I didn't experience any problems while there.  From everything I learned as I researched my trip, it's a good idea to not spend too much time in the border towns.  That's where the majority of drug influenced shootings occur.

Not sure I would go back to Mexico on my bike or bicycle for that matter.  Of course we get all the horror stories in our San Diego media so......................... The scare is having an effect as the Cruise Ship Industry out of San Diego is shutting down pretty much.

However while camping in Borrego Springs this winter, I met up with a guy making an epic adventure down to Mexico by himself.  He was riding his Vstrom 650 and packed to the gills. He was not worried a bit.

If you stay at home on the couch or in front of the computer, you'll be a lot safer. . . but you won't live. Go for it. I would recommend that you hit the coast line too. Puerto Vallarta is beautiful and they have great tequilas.  If I ever do that kind if trip, I would go on BMW 800GS and hit those trails too. I love Mexico!

Go go go. You could die tomorrow in the frozen food section of your grocery store.  Be smart about it but for sure you should go BECAUSE of all the things mentioned. For what was said about Mexico I could place the same harsh generalizations about the states, and I'd also be wrong. This is what M/C is for!
