My FrankenVFR still runs strong and just turned 125,000 miles tonight. My pictures were taken on the parking lot where I pulled off at Gateway Harley in St. Louis, MO
Bet that never happened on their lot before.
I was on my way for a beer and wings at bike night at Showmes
Way to go........ I've had a few to 100 but for some reason haven't taken them past that..... Maybe with this one since I'm putting so many extras on it.

I somehow feel pathetic in comparison. My '97 is still just under 40k. I've had a 6 mile commute for the last 18 years. That is killing me in the moto-respect catagory. I did just hit 100k on my '98 Mountaineer headed up to Winter Park on Saturday. I guess that shows I don't get out much. I wanted a100k pic of the SUV but I was in a hurricane at about 10k ft when I hit the mark. I wasn't getting out for anything. All of our big miles go on my wife's vehicle. That being said, I bet I have the cleanest LOW mile 13/14 year old vehicles. Both look/run just like the day I bought them.
125k Honda at a HD shop is a it ironic. Good for you. 125k is honorable for the bike as well as the rider!
You have loads of life in it yet. I had a 96 750 ft that reached 274000 miles and I only changed the engine because it was cheaper than replacing the clutch and basket, and I have a 97 fv that at the moment has 187000 miles on it and still going well. My current vfr800 fw, by contrast has only done 32000 miles and it feels horrible. Maybe it is just not run in yet.
Mine is still a lowly 102k (bought with <6k on the clock), but as my winter hack she doesn't get many miles put on her in the summer. Still goes so well, engine is as sweet as a nut. There should be no issue with getting a VFR past 200k, indeed they are lifed beyond that and a guy I know works for a famous lube company that has a VFR test-bed which has done over 500k (and only used 30 shims so far).
The mileage on these gear driven engines proves they built the best b-four ever in the fifth gen.
The fact the my old VFRs no matter how old can hold ground with the newest liter bikes proves that the bike is balanced better than most. It also proves VFR owners are better riders.....
Congrats Dave!! :fing02: I'm way behind you, I just turned 26000 on my 98. The 6 mile commute to work everyday doesn't help my cause though. Must get out and ride more.
One question for you. On the bike with 125000 miles, have you done any valve adjustments yet?

Oh, I like that Monk. I'll try and remember it and I wish you the same as the saying.

Its just on the edge of specs now but, still in there. This winter its getting the works.
Wow! These are truly impressive results. Fifth-generation viffer engines with 250-500k+ miles on them? That's freakin amazing!
Makes me wonder since my '98 only has 9.5k miles showing now, if with regular maintenance my barely broken-in 5th generation could still be going strong long after I retire to the rocking chair (I'm 53). Of course I'm also planning to accumulate mileage a lot faster than the original owner who only put 6.2k miles on my bike in the first 12.5 years since it was ridden away from the dealership the first time in August of '98!
I'm curious. How often have owners of these high-mileage viffers changed the motor oil, oil and air filter? What brand and type of motor oil(s) & filters have they been using? I'm also curious how many shims have been changed over the distance? Note: I'm the original owner of a '94 ST1100 with 90k miles so far and have not found it necessary to change a single shim since I first rode it from the dealership on 3/1/95!
I've read posts from some who've suggested viffers w/gear-driven cams may have a tendency to shear down the motor oil faster than in other engines. Perhaps so, but judging from these owners' results it would be hard to argue that having gear driven cams negatively affects the engines' longevity.
I will get there soon hopefully, but now with a couple of different bikes for commuting The Old GIrl is just for pleasure now :cheerleader: She is a little over 78k now bought with 21k on her. I really like your quote

Congratulations On your Milestone....May there be many more!!!

Here is my reply...
I change the oil very often. I do not look for that magic number. I feel it shifting odd and it gets changed, or I listen to the pitch of the gear drive and I may change it. It is alway this side of 3K. The nicer of the two VFR's uses less oil because I run the snot out of the high mileage bike. Bitching about a bike using oil seems a waist. When things are reving at 10 grand or 12 grand oil is going to get by .
I have a friend that just shimed his and it was in spec but if your going to pop the top on them cans why not do it right then and there. So did he need to?
I've clicked off 85k miles on my 02 w/95% of it Twisties. :bliss:
I missed about a solid year of riding 09/10 do to my crash, but I'm trying to get back out there more. It had 200 miles on it when I bought it.

I'm just getting to 75K on my '99, bought '01 with 3K. I did the oil every 3K for a long time but the last few years have gone to every 5K, just Valvoline dino. I put a K&N air filter in early on, mainly for the re-usability issue since factory filters are $50-60. I checked the valves myself the first couple times then had one or two shims changed by the dealer at 48K. I haven't checked it since, it's due but I'd bet they're in spec.
Sure would like to see 125K on the old beast some day. With my current commute that's only about 4 years off. :wheel:
Congrats on the 125,000 mile mark, very impressive. My 2002 VFR has been down for a while now and I'm hoping to get back on the road in the next week. I worked 85 miles from home for 3 years and I burned up some miles on several different bikes.
2002 VFR 121,290 miles
2006 Kaw 1400 28,850 miles Sold due to gas miles 35 mpg vs 50 mpg (with the 02 vfr)
2006 VFR 20,500 miles Sold electrical glitch
2007 VFR ABS 52,000 miles Sold with non abs 07 cash out for business
2007 VFR 11,000 miles see above
2009 VFR 15,520 miles The best VFR I've owned 1 year old today
I changed oil as recommended every 8000 miles, fork oil every 25-30K, Spark plugs 32K, chains average about 25K but actually have done better since I started using only WD-40 as lube and clean the chain 3 or 4 times a year. Coolant every 2 years or 50K, fuel filter every 50K, rear Shock about 50-60K. I do need to note that I drive my VFR like most people drive their car.
Congrats again
Rob
