I bought a 15 tooth for my '97 and didn't like it so I went back to stock. Check and see if they cross reference and if they are the same. If they are, will send you an almost new one that is collecting dust in my garage for the price of postage. - assuming that you are in the US.

Yes, 15 tooth, I use JakeWilson.com - may need to ask specifically for a 15-tooth sprocket though if they don't list it.
JT part is a JTF339 in 15-tooth.

Does anyone have any direct experience with either of these sprockets, specifically the 15 tooth?
VFR800 = 17T
VFR750 = 16T
VTR1000F = 15T
All directly interchangeable.
VFRs run a 43T rear sprocket. Going up to a 45T sprocket is more expensive than dropping a tooth at the front, but has advantages - the chain can last longer as it doesn't have to wrap around a smaller front sprocket, and it also shortens the wheelbase by around 10mm which is good for more nimble handling. A 45T goes on with standard chain length.

I thought 6th gens ran a 16T front, meaning I would have to go to a 15T to drop a tooth...
As for going up in the rear, are you sure I can make the original length chain work?

You are correct! Sorry, my mistake, I haven't kept up with the times :rolleyes:
I do know that both generations of 800 have different rear sprocket sizing (the PCD differs) so don't blithely order a 'VFR800' rear sprocket, you need to specify whether it is a 98-01 or a 02-11 VFR800.
As for chain length, I am 100% confident on that. I've personally fitted three 45T rear sprockets to VFR750s which run 16/43 gearing, with no problems at all. Remember that although the chain has to stretch around a larger rear sprocket, that sprocket also needs to be rotated closer to the front sprocket via the eccentric adjuster... so if you had the axle located at 4 o'clock (within the eccentric) with standard gearing, it might end up at 5 o'clock with the bigger rear sprocket. And with that comes another benefit - at 5 o'clock the axle is lower in the swingarm, and as the axle remains the same distance from the tarmac at all times, the swingarm has to go up - which lifts the tail, which steepens fork rake, which makes the bike turn in a little more sharply :tour:

On the 03, stock is 16 / 43. I am running 15 / 45 and use the stock chain.
Thanks for all the info. How is the 15/45 setup?
Pros and cons.
Biggest CON is the MPG and higher RPM to maintain a decent speed. I mainly commute now, and will be switching back to the 43, but keeping the 15. When I first made the change, I only changed the front to 15, and this change alone was decent.
It definitely changed the behavior in aggressive riding - motor gets to your desired RPM quickly and accelerates very nicely. In aggressive cornering, you have to watch the VTEC engagement, and the 15/45 definitely changed the feel for me.
If I were not commuting as much, I would stay with 15/45. I'm just looking for slightly better MPG.
Hope this helps!

Cool. The bike only sees canyon rides and trackdays lately, so mileage isn't a huge concern. Perhaps I'll start with the 15 front first and go from there.

That don't have any 15 tooth sprockets in stock... 6 to 8 week wait!!! :angry:
And Jake Wilson doesn't have them either.
I have -1 front and +2 rear on my 750 and I think its awesome. Some people don't like the shorter gearing, but I think its fantastic. Of course, I'm partial to 2nd gear wheelies too. After getting used to it, I could never imagine going back to taller gearing, it would feel like giving up 10hp.
