A part of me died tonite

I just watched my beloved 5th Gen VFR being ridden away by it's new owner   :mellow:

I bloody loved that bike - did a great lot of kms on it up and down the east coast of Oz over the last ten years. I've cleaned, fussed, farckled her over the years and she's repaid me by being a loyal and lusty mistress. We really had some great times together - talk about sellers remorse!

Still got my nice new (to me) 07 GS which I dig but I was gutted to see my beautiful red v4 sports-tourer ride up the street without me.

What now? ... well I suspect that I will once again own another Honda V4. Might not be too long away either - I'm still pretty sexed-up about them new crossruners :fing02: You blokes are stuck with me too - sorry!

Always amazes me how we can become so emtionally invested in inanimate objects.  I'm not hating, I do the same thing with my VFR - would be awful to not have it in the garage

I know what you mean.  They really do become part of who you are.  I felt similar watching someone ride off on my old '86 VFR750.  Almost like someone stealing your girlfriend (even though they paid for her...so to speak).

Sold my '98 two Mondays ago. Really nice guy; his 1st bike and familiar w/ what he bought.

So it has a good hm. Still, I forget and start to plan to do things as if I had 'er still, sob, sob...

On the bright side tho, I'm toying w/ the idea of a brand spankin' new bike-Maybe Ninja1000.

I'll put a link for a thread about the Ninja1000 &/or sport tourers in comparison to the VFR later.

(I think that's how that works at least...Am I right? I'll figure it out.)

--- Funny how attached I get to certain cars and bikes I've had and have, especially since I usually mod, fuss and farkle with the things to make them unique to my taste. I usually keep 'em a long while and at the time plan to "never sell."  My 5th gen and Valkyrie are like that now.   But then sometimes  it becomes apparent that "well dammit, you must sell" and the the deal gets done. When the new owner is riding away, I am sick and I pretty much stay that way for a few months, and that pit in the gut stays there and eventually dulls, but never totally recedes.  

So TexOz, I'm  there with you,  now go kill a few pints in your old 5th gen honor.   :beer:

Sorry to hear you had to say goodbye to your VFR.  I love my VFR, and part of the reason I haven't sold/traded it yet is I'm afraid no other bike would be as terrific an all-arounder for me.  Call it an irrational fear, but I worry that I'd miss my bike too much, so I'm hesitant to part with it.

Oh, and I can't really afford a new bike right now, so even though I'm currently lusting after a late model Speed Triple I won't have to conquer my fear anytime soon.   :biggrin:

Last time I was getting mine serviced I was talking to the guy that sold me mine, and he was telling me that
VFR buyers are not real good "Return customers". He reckons that the only time you ever see them again is when they come back in to buy another VFR.

It's like the girl you broke up with in high school, then you see her at a reunion 10 years later and ask yourself "WTF was I thinking?" :blink:    Unlike that, there are always more bikes.  I knew this about myself which is why I kept my 5th gen when I bought my gen 6.   It's not registered or insured, but I still drag it out once in a while to start it up and remember the good times I had on it.  That worth more than the few thousand $ it would get for it.

Unless it was being stolen right from under my nose, I have never imagined watching someone ride away on my VFR.

I could tell the guy who sold me his lost alittle something inside that day many years ago.
We met him and his family just this side of the 'woomba range and you could clearly see the sadness in everyones eyes.
The kids were hugging the bike goodbye and waving and stuff... I really felt like I was taking one of their own.

Time will heal mate... before you know it you'll be scanning the classifieds/dealers and back home with us soon.

I've had my 5th gen for about 18 months now.  Drove from Chicago to Columbus, OH and back in one day to pick him up.  He'd lived a harsh life, with rashed panels on both sides and dinged up rims, missing a mirror..  Shortly after I got him, someone tried to take him, but was unable to break the steering lock (enter a $90 Xena alarm lock).  Then he gets knocked over twice in 24 hours by cars parking.  His mirrors were all cock-eyed and asymmetrical, he's had (and still has) the usual electrical gremlins, every body panel is either cracked or scratched.

Despite all this, I love him.  He gets me to and from work everyday, rain or shine.  I think of him as a dog, my faithful pup that'll try and try every time I ask, always eager to go out and work or play.  His name's Derby, and I hope he's getting a serious makeover this winter.

I know how you feel man!! When I sold my 82 XJ650 Maxim, I was heartbroken when it rode away... Her name was Old Ugly but she was super reliable and a joy to ride. Sigh, we all miss one or two of our old ladies. I have a 96 VFR and I am head over heels in love again though. Go get another V4!!

Good luck trying to keep from having another one...      I've sold two fifth gens, and have a sixth gen now and STILL want another fifth gen...    I don't know why I ever sold them?

...been there...felt that...bought it back!

I find my mind wondering about those new crossrunners while I'm working (which is actually a very bad thing in my line of work) - think I'm gunna have to bite the bullet and go and test ride one - you know, just to get it out of the system!

Just wait till one day your sitting at a red lite and  it rides by . The first you think is who in the hell stole my bike  !!!!!

I am in the same boat (kinda) maybe it is worse, but  I'm hoping it's better.

My 2002 VFR will start but stalls at 2500 rpm. I've had pretty good mechanics look over it but up to now I've had no answers. I am working with a mechanic that looks at this as a challenge and promised me that I will be riding this puppy away. If he is not successful well I have a parts bike for my 2009. I have about 1400 dollars into this puppy and it's dawning on me maybe it's not worth it...But to me it is. This was the first bike I challenged the Dragon, the first bike I rode to NY to see a good friend who shortly there after passed from Cancer. In a sense this bike is a calender of my life and a good friend to assist enduring both the good times and the bad as well. I believe God wants us to be adventurous and the 2002 VFR and I have and if she never runs again well that too is Gods will.

Sorry I just realized that I'm not making you feel any better.

I've got a 1982 XJ650RJ Seca sitting in the garage, awaiting a new head gasket and exhaust studs.  I split the engine case in the kitchen of my studio apartment to change the chain guide.  She's my first bike, and considering the few hundred dollars I could probably sell her for, I plan on never selling her.  We'll see..

Fantastic mileage.  I'm a little over a quarter of the way there on mine.
Lots of things in life are poor investments.  Rent throws money away with no eventual return.  A BMW won't do anything (day-to-day) a Nissan Versa won't do.  That fancy entertainment center will be replaced in a few years.  As long as you're not impacting your health or life goals, no one can tell you what it's worth.  ;)

I've had 6 VFR's so far... enough said!! :laugh:
