Got this notion the other day, I want a more up right ride, now its gotta be done! I had Genmar risers on my 97 VFR and it was okay, I had Helibars on my 02 954 and it was better but this time I want more. I checked out the  convirti bars,  http://www.convertibars.com/  sure they have alot of adjustment  but a alot of price. I also checked out LSL http://spieglerusa.c...conversion.html I liked this idea much better but I found this link here http://www.vfrdiscus...__fromsearch__1
Sure its for a Vtec but it looks okay and should be close, so what the hell.

Today I bought a used top triple clamp in pristine shape $51
Tag metal 10mm riser clamps in black $25
Renthal 7/8 alloy superbike bar medium (775) in black $65
SS socket head bolts $5
So I will have to change the bolts on the riser to allen heads. I will need the rubber bushings for under the risers, anti vibration bar ends and then possibly a clutch hose, brake hose http://spieglerusa.c...rake-lines.html and throttle cables http://www.convertib...ccessories.cfm#.
I'll lt you know when its done, yeha!

Yeah, FotoMoto had a good idea there. The only thing I would probably do differently myself is to use blue locktite on the bolts securing the risers through the upper triple clamp.

You can't see those bolts, nor check them reasonably when in service, so a little extra peace of mind with the locktite would be worth it to me.

Please post pics of your progress and finished product!

Agreed, I put that s*^%%$ on everything, well almost.

Okay, update time. Here are a few pictures, nothing really new from FotoMoto's mod, maybe some more detail.
One picture is just a layout of parts so far.
Onther picture shows how I used a compass to draw out the drill holes on paper so that I could use it to make a center punch mark in the correct position for drilling the hole in the triple clamp for the risers, using the casting circles in the triple clamps underside as the location. I plan to use a smaller pilot hole before drilling to the final size. I think 15/32" is the closest for the 12mm bolt but I will get back on that if it is not correct.
There is the "tag riser" picture that gives you an idea of the 10mm offset. I plan to use the offset so that there is 100% contact of the riser to the uppler triple clamp so that the offset will be in the direction towards the front of the bike. There will be enough movement of the bars towards the rider without having to gain another 10mm. The tag risers are also great to use, being that they are threaded and you can exchange the bolts. I am replacing with SS 12mm socket heads that are 25mm long on the tread. Note that the washers have been filed down on one side as they are close to the casting in one area. All sharp edges filed smooth. And like an earlier post I will be using locktite.
I will be using 1/8" rubber between the riser and the tripple clamp. Any pipefitting joint should have this stuff to make common gaskets. I used a pen and outlined the riser onto the rubber to cut out its shape.

I plan on buying another plastic handlebar throttle part that connects to the trottle cables and new Renthal road grips so that it will be an easy swap over if I want to change back over to stock. I can't see that happening but you never know.

Hey Maxredline, if you have a pair of stock bars left over when your done, I'd like to buy them from you. I'd like to change out the heli bars on my y2k 5th gen.

Sorry, no, I want to keep both set ups.

Okay update.
I have drilled pilot holes into the triple clamp with the final hole size for my Tag risers at 15/32" with SS 12mm socket head bolts
Note Riser 10mm offset towards the front of the bike so that the risers have total contact to the triple clamp.
I used not only lock washers but loctite on the riser bolts
Rubber between the riser and the triple clamp with the bars inplace when tightening the riser bolts before the triple clamp is installed
I don't think I will need any anti vibration weights in the bars as long as I have some sort of weighted bar ends (cheap-o) with a quality renthal street grip that I am looking into now.

Removing the lock mechanism on the origianal triple clamp was a bit of a pain. I plan on changing the original T40 torque heads with socket heat bolts as the torque heads are almost stripped from removal. REMEMBER to always take your time removing anyting on your bike!

I forgot to mention when you bolt the risers to the triple clamps you must leave them loose and then install the bars into the risers and snug them up (temporary). Only then can you torque up the socket head bolts that join the risers to the triple clamp. This way the risers will be ligned up correctly with the handlebar. Please use loctite on the riser bolts.

Alright, first and second picture is off the torque head bolts that connect the locking mechanism to the triple clamp, I replaced with SS socket heads
Third picture is of the bars mounted on the bike with the modded triple clamp
Forth is of the bars adjusted so that full turning lock just misses the fairing.

Now comes the fun part. It looks like all cables and hoses will need 3 more inches of length. I think what I will do is drain the fluid out of the clutch and front brake resivours and lines so that I can place them on the bars, check for clearances and then do another measurement for new lines. Hopefully the resivours will not get in the way of the fairing, fingers crossed but I have a feeling I will need to get levers with a remote resivours. After that I order the new lines including the trottle cables and while waiting for them to be deliverd I will remove fairing parts to do the swap.

Just curious, where are you getting the longer cables and hoses from?  Are you getting them from another model of Honda or custom?

"I have drilled pilot holes into the triple clamp with the final hole size for my Tag risers at 15/16" with SS 12mm socket head bolts"

I hope you meant to say 15/32 on your drill size.  12mm is .4724 inches, 15/32 is .4688 inches.  15/16 is .9375 inches.

Auggius, I haven't fully researched where I will get the cables yet. I am not certain whether I can use the Renthal 755 bars due to probable clearance issues. I have heard of using Honda ST cables but as of yet I do not know how long they are. See "throttle cables: post in this forum

gswanson, Opps yes, good catch, 15/32" hole into the triple clamp ( I will edit that above, thanks)

I did the bar thing and needed a longer throttle cable setup (can't recall if one or both, probably both).  I believe I got the cable from Helibars, but it's been a while.

One cable source is on the 1st post of this tread, but they are made here.
http://www.motionpro...orcycle/custom/

I don't think Helibar cables would do the trick with the Renthal 755 bars but as it is I am not sure I can use them.

Awesome thread! I'm very interested to hear what you end up doing about cables. Keep us posted!

I have been super busy with work, but I should be back in the garage in a week.
Okay, the crazy work schedule is done, now some garage spring cleaning and I will be back at it.
Funny a bud of mine just bought a clean 5th gen and the bike's triple clamp has the holes drilled out but had the original clip-ons installed. He got a handlebar and some pieces needed for the mod but I assume the guy didn't mod the cables and hoses properly and was riding around with the bars binding.
Any how I will be draining the fluid and removing the brake and clutch hose soon so that I can mount the controls so I can mount a bar that will fit properly.

Unfortunately I have gotten to busy to finish off this mod at this time. I am just going to install Helibars and be done with it for this season. I will post up in the future when I resume.
