Post-rain Monday morning asphalt, some velocity, a corner, front wheel wash out, and a rock wall equal bike disintegration. I escaped with my life, and apart from a bruised lower back (curb) and a little rash on my right calf, I am relatively unscathed.
My bike is in the salvage yard. By looking at the pics, should I pay the $400 in fees to get it out, bring them the title, and call it a day, or negotiate some sell price for the wreckage (and what possibly could that be)?
Really sorry about the wreck but glad you are not badly hurt.
Bike is a mess and unfortunately it is hard to tell how extensive is the damage just from the pictures. Usually when you start repairing a wrecked bike you find more damage than meets the eye as you begin to work through the problems.
If I didn't want to mess with it, would the normal procedure be to sign over the title as is, or does the yard pay me for the motor and wheels, and nuts and bolts?
From the looks of that bike, I'm glad you survived that deal. Not much to salvage from those pics. I'd be done with it and move on. Did your insurance company give it to the salvage yard? I wouldn't sign my title over to anyone until I settled up with my insurance company.
It was a 2002, so I only had liability on it. At the scene, the cops and the wrecker loaded it up and hauled it away. So it is my property, it's just "in jail." It will cost, as of today, $400 to "get out of jail."
Don't forget to get the fee of towing and storage from your insurance as well. Telling them that will also speed them up to come to a settlement and for them to get the bike away from the junkyard.

Well thank you, sorry for the bike but glad you got off with just minor injury, thats the important thing. Good luck dealing with Insurance, been there done that! Opps just read it was liability only! OWCH - looks like you can salvage the motor, maybe the frame if the head set is good, swing arm electronics. I would part it out and sell it off if your not a builder.
first of all, glad you escaped with minor injuries, looks like it could have been a lot worse. If you're thinking of getting another 6th gen VFR, and you're the type that likes to make mods there could be some useful parts worth keeping - are the wheels/tires OK? did you have an aftermarket seat? is there a power commander in there somewhere?
it might be worth it to reclaim some of the surviving parts for your next bike. just my $0.02
Even if both wheels and forks are good I'd think you'd just break even. The engine obviously took a big hit. I'd call it a day, give them the bike and search for another one!
Hate to see any bike in that condition but at least they didn't have to load you on a wrecker. Good luck!

If you're planning to get another 6th gen and have a garage with extra room to store parts, than you may consider keeping the... ashes.
If not, then just forget about it. $400 Will be hard to recoup from what I see - Lots of damage all around.
Wow!, that's a lot of damage considering you were in a residential area, but that rock wall sure looks hard enough to take big angry bites at your bike at any speed. Just curios if hte LEOs on the scene started bugging you about what your speed might have bee during the crash.

95 VFR I'm curious too. I was hauling when I low-sided and slammed into a concrete barrier. My bike didn't look half that bad, but it was totalled by the insurance company. Ouch!
I'm also curious that every time I see photos of firefighters, their tournouts are always immaculate. Mine looks like I've been crawling through hell. :huh:
Yesterday I went through my tank bag, and everything in it was shattered. I found a quarter (the coin) that was bent in half. From what I can tell, the bike must have hit the wall tank first at speed. So this is what a motorcycle looks like when it gets flattened from the top. Real shitty.
Wheels, tires, rotors and calipers will get you to break even at $400, maybe a little more. If the heads and a few electronic bits are OK, you can probably get another $250.
So is it worth your time to rip it apart for $250 less eBay and Paypal fees? For me, yes. But there's value in it for me in just to completely taking it apart and getting all the little spares and screws.

That bike looks about as trashed as I was when I hit a wall in my crash. :wacko: I'm glad you weren't wedged between the bike and the wall or your family might be choosing whether to bury you in a suit or your riding gear!

Glad you're OK. It lets you learn a lot about bike maintenance without worrying about screwing something up too.
GO get your bike, man! $400? I would part that thing out in a heartbeat and make atleast a grand on top of getting the $400 back. The motor alone will bring $600+ on ebay.

Even with the side of it completely ripped off? You are not suppose to be able to see the clutch. Its not a Ducati! LOL!
