Need Help Troubleshooting

Okay gurus, I was on my way home this evening from work about a 20 minute ride mostly interstate.

I'm about a mile from home doing about 40mph and came to a stop sign.  As I accelerate, the FI and oil pressure lights come on, the bike stops running then everything goes out.  I mean everything.  I put it back into neutral, the headlight comes back on and I hit the starter.  It starts up and then it goes out again.

After about 4 tries, it starts up again and I make it to a block from my house.  Same thing.  Thought I was going to have to push it home, but it started after about 5-6 times of trying and limped home.

I have a fairly new VFRness, R/R.  I've never had a problem in 62,000 miles.  I'm trying to think of what can knock out everything...engine, lights.  I'm just thankful this didn't happen going about 80mph on the interstate.

Please give me suggestions.  If you need further bike info, ask.

first things i would check is 1: bad battery, 2: stator,  3: R/R,  4: see if you have any bad grounds

Battery ????

Check map sensor and the connection to that. Also make sure your choke is not open

Thank you all for your suggestions.  

The wires coming out and into the R/R got pretty hot.  I could put my hand on the top of the rear cylinder so the engine wasn't too hot yet, but the wires were fairly hot.

Should they be getting that hot?

are the yellow ones getting hot and/or the red/green ones?  if the yellow ones are getting hot, then there is a problem with the R/R and/or stator.... if the red/green are getting hot then the problem is with your VFRness/bad ground..... from your first description it sounds like you have a bad ground some where.....also if you could test your stator, R/R, and battery it would pin point the problem faster.

Thanks reaper.  I just went out and started it and it's definitely only the yellow wires that are getting hot. The red/black/green ones are fine.  Also the heat starts before the clip connecting to the R/R.  Then the yellow wires leading into the R/R start to get hot.

Loose battery cable?

Would a loose battery cable make the yellow wires get hot?

I'm not an electrical kind of person.  I have a multimeter and have checked the battery.  That has good readings.  
How do I check the readings from the stator (which I'm thinking might be the problem) and the R/R.  I've looked at the service manual and it shows taking the plastic clip off from the stator and sticking the multimeter leads in that.

Help!

- Sometimes if you have a loose battery cable, the bike/car will just act fine and then go funky. - It was just a guess. Its got nothing to do with the yellow wires.

( --- btw - yea, the yellow wires get hot, it sux, but welcome to the under designed VFR charging system......)

If you want to do a check on the whole system, here's the drill:  

Steps:
- Recharge battery overnite - then to take it to Autozone or simular to load test. -- Good? Bad?
- With good battery fire it up.
These are R/R quick checks--- do first..  
--- With voltmeter at battery get voltages -- idle volts? 5000 rpm volts? Whats the nunbers? Should be in 13ish min idle and in 14s at revs.
- Check stator
- 1. pull connector apart. Set meter to resistance. Check pin to pin, 3 yellow wires, A to B, B to C, C to A. Whats the numbers? Should be less than 1.0 ohms.
- 2. Check continuity from each A,B,C pin to ground, -- -should be infinity - nada nothing. no continuity.
- 3. Crank it back up. Do another pin to pin thing, but set meter on AC volts. idle and 5000 rpms. What's da numbers? Should start 20ish and climb 50ish and more.  
4. Repeat hot.

Check the connectors, pull them apart and look for bad connections.
