Just getting out for the first time this season and noticed her getting hot fairly quick in mid 70 degree weather especially at a light. What temperature should the cooling fans kick on? She only has 10K on the clock and found it odd that it's climbing in the low 200's so quickly.
Fan should kick in around 215°. If it doesn't come on by 220° I would be concerned. I've seen my '98 as high as 245° once. That was just after Reg Pridmore took her for a 3-lap spin around Streets of Willow in 100° temps with viffergyrl riding pillion.
It all sounds good. If in doubt, remove the side cowls and with the engine cold, remove the cap and be sure the coolant is topped off and that the overflow tank is up to the mark. Then get the engine up to operating temp and squeeze the rad hoses - the should feel very firm, meaning that the radiator cap can hold pressure. If the temp is up so that the thermostat is open and you have squishy hoses, replace the cap and that should take care of it.
My '01 fan comes on at 217. In hot weather high 220 s are common. The highest I've seen was somewhere mid 230 s. The owners manual says to worry above 250. I think a red light comes on and it may even shut itself down. Not sure about that. Corrections?
I recently had overheating issues with my 99' I picked up 2 weeks ago. I flushed the cooling system 3 times with distilled water making sure to run the bike at every flush. Once all the crap was out I then fillled her up with Engine Ice and nothing else. Since then I commute with temps around 170-180 and sometimes it pops to 210ish at red lights.
Before at a light the bike would get to 230 and that was almost to hot to sit on the bike. The frame was hot, the exhaust was super hot and the fairings started to warm up along with the seat.
