Best Place to Get Screws and Such

My bike has the classic symptoms of stupid PO...  There's missing body screws here and there, a front fender screw missing, rear cowl missing a screw, etc. etc.  Where's the best place to look for odds and ends like this?  Thanks!

You'd be surprised what your locally owned motor parts store might have in stock or can get in a day or two.  I've been hunting for M10 x 1.25 x 70 mm bolts online to modify my niece's Nighthawk. The local NAPA can get them overnight.   Seems that everybody has the coarser 1.50 thread, and everybody has shorter 1.25 thread, but almost nobody has a 1.25 x 70mm.  I found a couple of sources, one being Summit Racing for $38 shipped (all I need is two bolts so that's $19 per bolt).  I found one other with plain zinc coated bolts that's pretty cheap, but I'm going with the local store.

Best suggestion so far.  That's what I'm talking about, OEM stuff like fairing bolts.  Generic nuts and bolts aren't the issue.  Thanks for the other suggestions, tho...

I have had a lot of success finding metric screws and such at Sears Hardware. Other than the hex bolts with the really large heads on the right and left plastic, I almost always find what I need.

I hear ya, I just ran into this on Friday when i removed the rear fairing
For myself I'm off to try Lowes tonight, they have the big drawers of odds-n-ends screws, washers, bolts, nuts, pins, grommets, ect...
On my list is two short bolts small diameter, two short bolts medium diameter, one gromett
I have example bolts witht the right threads I'm taking with me as a guide, and I have measured the lengths

Grommet- one of the tailight plugs fits into it, one is missing
Small Diameter Short Bolts- secures the tailight to the inner fairing, both missing
Medium Diameter Short Bolts- secures the high-mount Staintune muffler to the frame, one missing, the other too long to tighten down

I'm still going to try Lowes tonight as my stuff is very generic, and the medium bolts can't be OEM as they are part of the exhaust mod, but the site did confirm the bolt to be an 8x30 or 8x40
But I can see how awesome that would be if I was looking for something really specific

It's not too hard to find metric in the USA, but stainless steel metric is not easy to find in local shops.  When I'm in the 'States I generally order from McMaster-Carr, but they do have minimum quantities...

For OEM-type fasteners, I don't know the cheapest source, now, since Zanotti Motor closed.

For the taillight plug gasket, try and see if an o-ring might work in the correct size???

If anyone is replacing brake hardware with non-OEM bolts, beware cheap fasteners.

Always use the best grade metric bolts possible. I used grade 12.9 as it is the strrongest grade of bolt which is readily available commercially.

Stainless steel looks pretty, but it's tensile strength is very low. Don't use it for brakes or suspension components.

also get youself a BOLT selection from cycle gear. I got the CR/CRF selection and its real handy to have in the shop.

+1 for Mason City Honda.  I just ordered the holder for the rear brake lines that fits over the chain adjustment bolt and while the didn't have it in stock, they just popped the package from the distributor in an envelope and sent it on to me.  Same day service on their end.

http://myworld.ebay.com/ghmotor-llc10/?_trksid=p4340.l2559 This Ebay seller/store has a complete set of silver fairing bolts and fasteners for the 5th gen, on sale for $32.54 + $7.15 shipping.  It's says in the ad he's sold 16 of the sets, so someone on VFRD has probably bought a set.  If they have, maybe they could chime in and let us know how they fit.  He says in the ad, that they are non-OEM.  I was thinking about buying a set, just to have on hand, because I'm always breaking the plastic fairing clips when I take them out and I need to replace a couple of the fairing bolts.

Very true V8C, Stainless also has a lower shear strength than steel but like you imply for fairings and such no problem.

Yes, I thought that would go w/o saying, but sometimes it is a good idea to say it anyway!  I'm happy with stainless steel for just about everything--except brake calipers and discs, mainly.  Stainless is less strong than ferrous steel, but I wouldn't say A2 SS tensile strength is "very low".  That does describe alloy bolts, though...

The local ACE hardwear has a great selection of metric to include stainless.

Summit Racing had the 10mm x 70mm 1.25 thread chrome flange bolts I needed to mount a rack on my niece's 750 Nighthawk.  However, at $38 shipped, we couldn't justify it.  We decided to go with a pair of zinc plated ones for $10 shipped from Belmetric.com.

They got me through a couple of bike builds. The local one closed down but there's always one within 10 miles.
