I know Seb is the clutch cover fab expert... is there a resident carb guy?
I'm seriously considering paying to have them rebuilt.

What do you want done to them?
We don't have a vendor that does carbs, but there are a number of knowledgeable people here that can help. If you can remove them from the bike, you do the rest too!
I'm not a carb expert but have a friend who is in a big way as his job is working on helicopters & there fuel systems have something like 1000 individual parts. He came & showed me how to service my gen 4 carbs when I had one as a track bike & really in most cases you don't need to strip them down much. The most important thing is cleaning them & making sure the float levels are correct & the diaphragms aren't damaged & sealing properly. So you more or less remove top covers each carb & remove diaphragms, remove jets, mixture screws & then remove bottom of carb that has floats & clean the inside with carb cleaner. Then reassemble going by the service manual specs for set up which are spot on in most cases. Any of those parts worn or damaged replace.
PM CornerCarver. He had a set rebuilt on a recommendation from his neighbor.
If it's not too serious, and just need varnish and gunk cleared out, it's not that hard to do yourself. Just a lot of small bits to keep track of.
I took them down that far once already and unstuck everything. Ran great after that but after sitting 2 weeks, everything is locked up again.

Two weeks isn't long enough for varnish. Is your tank rusting? Or particularly dirty? Evil ex dump sugar in it?
Sounds more the time I pulled mine apart and "cleaned" them with carb cleaner. I had to have KPerham go through them again and actually clean them by soaking them in Berryman Chem Dip for Carbs and taking a small wire to clear each and every orifice.

Funny thing about sugar in tank. As it turns out it's an urban myth. Sugar does not dissolve in gas as per the mythbusters episode. I wouldn't stake my money on them being right though.
The ethanol doesn't help with the carbs getting clogged. Two weeks and the small jets on them are clogged on the ST. Usually a can of starter fluid will get it running enough that it will run again, but isn't a real solution.
Since it sounds like you already cleaned them once, just do it again.
Drain the carbs on the VFR when the bike is going to be sitting. They are easy to get to and will save you massive amounts of headache in the future. Sending them out isn't going to fix gas clogging your jets again from sitting.
I think I'm probably the only one around that has done carbs for a living. I don't advertise my services on here or anywhere really, but I've been rebuilding carburetors for about 14 years. Did it on a professional level for a little over 2 years, more than a few national championships were won in the watercraft world with carbs that I built/tuned. I'd be happy to get you straightened out if you really want them done by someone with experience.
RiceI used to hang out at my friends bike shop and do a little work from time to time. A guy brought his Gixxer in because the GF got mad at him and poured sugar in the tank. My buddy drained the tank into his fuel caddy because of the Mythbusters episode and didn't think anything about it. I guess the sugar came out of solution and settled on the bottom of the fuel caddy and when he put the gas into his own bike it came up and clogged the crap out of his injectors. Couldn't get it all off the bottom, yet it would still flake off and come out when he tried to pump gas into his bike. He tried putting an inline filter on the filler line and you could see the flakes in it.KPerhamFunny thing about sugar in tank. As it turns out it's an urban myth. Sorry that has nothing to do with the issue, but yeah sugar will jack your $&!+ up!
She's alive!!
At least right now she is.
I pulled the tank and air box and was able to spray some carb cleaner in the stacks. Then just easily worked the throttle until all the butterflies were moving freely. After a few minutes of trying start, she fired up only a full choke. Currently idling with no choke. :D
I'm going to let it sit and idle for a while... I got nowhere to be. Lol... there's a bottle of Techron in with 3 gallons of gas. Ill let that sit until Thursday morning and see how things are working then.
Thanks for the help guys!!

Starting problems are usually the result of a cursed 8 spoke rear wheel. I'm not sure who put the curse on your wheel and the bad news is there is no way to remove it and you will continue to have problems. Since I am such a stand up guy and motorcycle humanitarian I am going to swap you for my 6th Gen rear wheel and I'll even pay the shipping both ways. No need to thank me I am just watching out for you
Rollin
Man... such a generous offer... I could never live with myself for taking advantage of you like that.

Thanks tyler. Id definitely be more bummed if she werent painted already.
I'm back at the shop now. 10 hours ago it was running free and smooth. This morning, the throttle is already 99% stuck in place. I was able to get it running and idling... but the throttle is just SO stiff.

Have you tried actuating the carb linkage at the carbs with the throttle cable unhooked? Sometimes old cables will stick and bind and work terrible, might wanna pull the cables and lube them up and work them real good before re-installation.
I took apart the right controls last night and trickled garage door lube in the cable. It helped some, but the carb linkage itself is what's sticking...
After a few minutes of running, it is now movong much more easily. That still does not help me understand why everything gets sticky again so quickly. I just have my fingers crossed that after running 3 gallons with tech Ron, any varnish will be washed out.

Well if your carbs are sticky no amount of additive is likely to do anything for you.. When they are sticky its usually at the shafts, and no fuel passes over the shaft let alone in between the bushing and shaft. Need to try working them back and forth and spraying brake clean into the shaft holes from the inside of the carb body, then after getting them all done, go through and do the same thing with a spray lubricant.
Good to know. When I had the carbs off the first time, I didn't really make a point to clean the linkage, beyond a few blasts of carb cleaner. I still have some things to get taken care of before I hit the streets, so I have plenty of time to pull the carbs and give it all another once-over.
tylerstockGreat to hear! It always feels better to fix your problems yourself :)
Have you thought about a performing a carb sync? I thought my bike should be fine but did it anyway. They were waaaaay off and fixing them made a huge difference in performance. Any chance a buddy of yours has the meter you could borrow?
Oh and I'm jealous of your paint job. Very nice!
Did you buy your carbtune? or borrow it?
I'd pay shipping both ways, plus a little extra if I could "rent" yours for a little while. :)
Just make a sync tool yourself. It takes one trip to a good hardware store, $15 with tax, and some used motor oil. There are a handful of threads about making your own on here somewhere.

I love making things myself! Time to research!!! :D
Thanks Yosh
