Clymer's Manuals Suck...secondary Master Cylinder Question.

Since my clymers manual doesn't explain how to separate the seconday master (unless that info is in the transmission section, I didn't look) from the caliper....could someone give me some insight on that. First time working with linked brakes and these calipers....some spoon feeding would be much appreciated. The secondary master cylinder is leaking so I need to rebuild it.

Thank you,

Jeff

"...simply remove engine.  Assembly is reverse of above..."

"...simply remove engine.  Assembly is reverse of above..."

That's funny timmy. How original.

I'll ask the question again..how do you separate the left side caliper bracket from the caliper? The PDF service manual on this site does not say how to do it.

It's obvious timmythecop doesn't know either.

I've never seperated mine, but page 15-35 of the Honda service manual gives an exploded view. Maybe that will help.

"...simply remove engine.  Assembly is reverse of above..."

Hahahaha. That's really not even that far off from the real thing.   I saw a Clymer or Hanes repair manual for the SR-71. I think all repair instructions were "...tow to airbase. Give to mechanic"

Here ya go.  Don't throw the Clymers away.  Sometimes the pictures in the Clymers are better than the factory manual. Coolant change for example.  Try finding the second drain plug using the factory manual :)

Jeff-

With the linked brake system, there's some tricks to bleeding it out.  It sounds like you know your way around a wrench a bit as it is.  Joniell's info looks pretty solid.

I've only ever done this on a ST1300 as I haven't had to service the brake system on my 7th Gen yet... All I remember after getting the brake system pieced back together is how much of a bear it was getting ALL the air out of the lines.

Knowing my mechanical history, there's probably something ridiculously easy my dad and I were missing.  Speed bleeders would have helped I'm sure.

I detect some hostility in that statement? He was making fun of the manual because we all know THEY SUCK.

My secondary arrives tuesday so Ill be going through the same fun. No more burnouts on my bike as Im pretty sure it totally jacked my brakes. MASSIVE front end vibration when braking with rear only.

Anyways, according to my honda service manual, remove the boot and there is a snap ring behind it. should all come apart after that. There isnt much to it....

txsurfer, you are probably right about that....Tim, please forgive my arrogant ignorance.

These MODERN day brakes are much different than the first gen stuff so it was kind of difficult to grasp a new "image" in my head....
After a break down a friend of mine gave me on how to disasemble it by REMOVING the brake pad pin bolt it was a moment of EUREEKA and from that point all seperated without problem. Geez I feel stupid and educated at the same time.
Soooo as of last night I rebuilt the seconday master cylinder, both front calipers and installed new pads. Bleeding went okay actually but still have some air in the "rear" sytem to get out. The cost for this venture was in the neighborhood of $150.00 but probably saved myself at least $400.00 to $500.00 than having a dealership do it. I probably could have done without rebuilding the calipers BUT since the secondary master was leaking and the pads were looking pretty worn, I thought I would go ahead do it all while I'm there and be done with it.

Oh and by the way....the clymer manual says not to remove the push rod on the secondary master cylinder. Ignore that. Yes you can. There is no adjustment on that push rod (there is on the rear master cylinder) When you reassemble just tighten it securely, that's it.
