So my rear sprocket flew off on the freeway yesterday. Right along with the sprocket carrier. Looks like the nut got loose but didn't notice it..
Was going 80mph when it happened, luckily I had enough momentum to coast off a freeway offramp.
FYI I have 110,000mi on this VFR. Rear axle was never rebuilt but still spins smoothly.
Anyone know the best place to get parts? I looked up the missing bits and its about $400 worth of OEM parts. I'm willing to buy it off a used/parts shop.

It would be cool to find one from a wreck / ebay. Failing that, check out servicehonda.com
Ebay. Probably a handful up there. Might as well clean out the bearings and grease everything while the bike is down.

I will now. sending the frame and swingarm out to powdercoat next week. will sort the rear axle then.
I assume you'll be replacing the front sprocket as well? I am surprised nothing got eaten up.

i have seen pics where someone else had lost the 46mm nut and washer, but the cush drive itself had not yet fallen off.
good case for regular servicing of the rear hub and bearings, along with a new nut, properly torqued and staked.
On mine, i use a dab of blue locktite, then torque and stake. even though the thread locker is not called for, i feel better using it.
just don't get carried away and put too much on, or it will wick into the collar and seal area. In this case, I apply it to the female threads of the nut only.
Didn't you just mention somewhere about replacing the cush drive rubber with something a little more firmer?

WOW! One guy loses his chain and smashes casings and another guy loses the entire sprocket carrier assembly on the same day!!?? Makes me happy to be sick and not riding.....

go back and find those parts!! chances are they are scratched but not still use able.. get a new washer and nut.. .

Is the only thing holding the rear wheel in place at this point the brake rotor & caliper?

I heard/felt a sudden 'snap', and immediately pulled the clutch in. I noticing a part falling back in my mirror.. I thought the chain broke... which something which I've never experienced. I let the clutch out a little just heard the chain spinning free, so it wasn't that.
I priced out the missing parts: Hub Sprocket Assembly, rubber dampers, bolts-- total $400 in OEM parts. I doubt I can get them junked, some most places will want to sell you the whole rear suspension (SSA & axle assembly).
I'll be replacing both sprockets. The chain is on it's last leg so I'll be getting a sprocket/chain combo set.
Incidentally, I drove past the same place where it fell off the next day..... noticed it's on the side of the Ventura Freeway with no shoulder, just 3 feet of space between fast lane and a concrete barrier. I'll leave that behind...

I'd never even considered that it was a possibility for that to happen, but there it is... glad it wasn't any worse for you than that.
Can you get a hub assembly off one of the guys here who has fitted a Triumph rear hub?
Likewise, I've never seen or heard of that happening on a VFR before. The nut must have backed out--I can't see it just shattering. You are very lucky...
