So, I finally got my very own 4th Gen (96') with only 25,xxx on the odometer :woohoo:
The thing is completely sweet! The Carvers helped me change my fork and bled my clutch and brakes (thanks guys). It even came with a powerlet adapter, which leads me to my question.
I Ordered a powerlet cord for the adapter but it won't charge my phone. I turn the key to acc. mode to give it some power but, no luck. I even took the seat off and trace the cables from the battery back to the adapter but still like before, no luck (sigh). So I opened the casing connected to the cables from the battery and found the fuse, which was not blown. At this point i'm confused and out of ideas  So, does the bike have to be running before my phone begins to charge?
Please help. I wanna have her in tip top shape before my Myrtle beach road trip July 4th.
Congrats on the bike! Keep an eye on it or Mini might use it for parts.
If any of the Carver's touched it that would explain why it is broken LOL! The logical thing to do first is try a new cord. A voltmeter would also be useful to verify that power is getting to the outlet.
Rollin
Since you already traced the wires and know it is connected, whip out that voltmeter and check for continuity and voltage.
Is it a USB charger, or a straight cigarette plug charger? The USB ones can be finicky on the phone side.
which cord did you get?
One that has the right size plug for your phone?
Or one which has a female end in which you push the cigarette ligher style plug (which has a plug at the end that plugs into your phone)?
(or tell us the powerlet part#)
did you attach it straight to the battery? Tap into a live wire?
If you used one of these

then it *could* be that the metal spade that is pushed down didnot breach the out mantle of the cable and thus makes no contact to the copper wire inside.
Put a voltmeter on 25 volts DC and lift up the cover on the Powerlet outlet put the red tip in the center of the bottom (hot), the black on the outside of the metal tube (ground). Do you have power with key off (unswitched and you could backfeed with a battery tender)? Do you have power with key on (switched and taking a signal from a running light)? If you have power on either than check the phone charger in a car outlet. If it doesn't work sometimes the head is two parts and you unscrew it and find a fuse in there. If NONE of those things leads to juice then something is shorted or not connected somewhere. Do you have a Fuzeblock or distribution center somewhere on the bike? Look there.
I bought the Micro USB short powerlet charging cable (part #PPC-027-SC)
Its the one with the female style connector.
The wires are ran straight to the battery.
Just not getting any juice to the phone.
I don't have a fuzeblock.. will that help?
If you have voltage, then my $10 is on the phone. Depending on the phone, it might not accept a straight USB connection for charging. Some of them have fancy circuits that put a signal on top of the 5V charge voltage. The phone will only accept and begin charging with that signal.
Polarity swapped? Most of the time doesn't really matter, but with those high tech things, if the + is on the - and vice versa, could not want to charge.
Powerlets don't work if you have the green shirt of shame. Known issue.
