I am looking to add some "running lights" in fact a led strip around the Fairing edge at the front of the VFR800 - what would the most likely source of power be for this job - I was thinking of using the power lead to the horn - what do you think?
The proper way to add accessories is to connect them to the battery and switch with a relay. Trigger the relay with the license plate light so power comes on with ignition. Add a fuse.
What you suggest should work if the wattage is low enough for that circuit.
Eastern Beaver fuse block comes prewired and with connecting hardware. It'll fit under your seat and allow you to add additional accessories. I have one on my KLR and it works great.
If you use the power lead to the horn, make sure that power lead is on a switched circuit. Some people tap into the headlight power or license plate light wire. Adding a relay isn't a huge deal if you want to do it without cutting into wires.
Plus I would advise to put in an on/off switch as well.
There may be situations you do not want the LED lights, at night for instance.
Plus I do not know what your local laws say about adding any lights other than OEM. If they are strict, you at least have the option to offer to switch them off should a LEO pull you over for it...
For that very reason I fiited one on mine, as well as using a well know brand. The units have the "EU" mark. At least the German police saw no reason to pull me over during the last couple of days....
I have mine powered through a relayed fusebox as well.
