What's A Supertrapp Worth?

A friend of mine who was a Honda service manager years ago has an unused Supertrapp exhaust still in the original box for sale. He bought it for his '84 VF1000F and never put it one. If the price is right, I might be interested, but have no idea what to offer him. Any suggestions? I'm meeting up with him after work tomorrow to check it out and will post a pic or two.

It is not a question of what it is worth more like what does he want to part with it ,this would be a very rare part and should be worth probaby around $600 but what will it take to buy .

Good point - what I meant to say is what would be a fair price to pay for it? He may already have a number in mind, but I want to have an idea what's reasonable before we meet up tomorrow. If he says $600, I'll know he's in the ballpark. If he says $300, I won't let him leave with it. ;)

The right question is what's it worth to you IMHO.

Or, what a new pipe for that bike costs. At least you'll have a ballpark idea.

Brand new mufflers, still in the box, for 1980's sportbikes are pretty much unobtanium, and so are priced accordingly.

Nobodies makes headers for any 80's bikes.

The Supertrapp would be a very "period correct" pipe for the earliest VFR. Personally though, it was always hard for me to like the Supertrapp pipes as they always looked kind of unusual to me with those back pressure tuning discs at its tip instead of the usual expected round pipe outlet or open "megaphone"........but I guess they did work....

I have no idea if it's a full exhaust or just the cans, but can tell you later today when I meet up with the owner and get pictures. He told me that it comes with a jet kit as well.

I think it's all stainless, but I'm not positive on that. We'll all know soon enough.

You can remove all the discs plus the end cap and run without them. Then it's an open megaphone with minimal baffling and packing like everyone else.

My bike has a full hindle stealth exhaust... hindle doesnt even make the muffler packing anymore..

I have Trapps on an 83. The mufflers are stainless. I like that you can adjust them. Used to run it real loud but after riding it to work for awhile after an 8 hour shift in a factory quiet is better.

Well, we got together as planned and after I showed him my bikes and shop, he got out the box.

Then we commenced to unpacking it. I don't think he had ever opened it since he bought it way back when...

As you can see, it isn't a stainless system. The pipes appear to be painted with high temp paint or maybe ceramic. The left side has a small bit if light surface rust starting to show near the end closest to the cannister. Fortunately most of it is on the backside and some careful prep work and touchup with the right high heat paint should make that go away.

The cannisters look like they're brushed aluminum; a magnet doesn't stick to them and they show slight signs of aluminum oxidation in a few spots. Those will be easy to brush out with the right abrasive material - something like Scotch-Bright.

I guess the thinner you make the end caps, the quieter it sounds. These are in unopened packages...

All the bits and pieces are there but there are no installation instructions. Most of it appears to be self explanatory, but I would like to know the correct way to bolt them onto the hangers. There's a little tube of high temp lubricant that I assume is used for the ends that slide into the cannisters?

Included was this carburetor recalibration "system" otherwise known as a jet kit.

Do these need to be rejetted if this exhaust is used? I'd really hate to have to pull those carbs off again after all this bike has been through.

Overall, I'd say that this was a nice find and something that might look nice on my bike. You're probably wondering if I bought it, eh? ;)

Awesome find! Yes, the more plates that are on the louder it is. I kind of thought you might be getting a full system.

No way a Vifferhead could walk away from NOS first gen piece like that if he owns the bike it fits....I would have trouble not buying it and I no longer own a first gen (other than the VF500Fs)

Yes, I bought the system because I would have been a fool not to at the ridiculous price that he gave it to me for. He really liked my Interceptor and wanted the exhaust to go to a "good home," so he gave it to me for less than half what he originally paid for everything.

I have no idea what those went for in the 80's, but it has to be a smokin' deal! :goofy:

I remember getting Super Trapps for my VF700 back in the day. That was way before craigslist or ebay and I didn't want to go through the hassle of a newspaper ad for the originals so I can still remember taking the new OEM pipes and.....................................throwing them in a dumpster. I wouldn't do that today but I also wouldn't keep OEM parts for 25 years either.

I suggest you have the inside coated as well as the outside. I am sure it will collect water in the low spots and as its mild steel...

$250 is a gift for yours. Coat it and watch out for speed bumps, the rear headers are a little low at the bottom curve.

I'm thinking that I may never put this exhaust on my VF1000F since the powder coated mufflers and collector are holding up fine and look great. Before I put the SuperTrapp up on eBay, I'll offer it here to anyone who may be interested. PM me to discuss the details if you think you might want it.

awesome what you did to those bikes omg that 1000 must be a dream come true with the modern wheel fork brake etc-- holy shit batman he has the PERFECT BIKE I FOUND IT !!!!
