Here's what I've found while researching huggers for the 6th gen. Hopefully it will help someone decide what they want. Note that exchange rates vary constantly. I saw British Pounds to USD change in the 10 minutes I was doing price conversions. Outside of the Harris and Geelong, fit and finish varied among users. I don't know if this was quality control issues or varying capabilities of installers....or both. UK VFR guys tend to like the Harris and NWS, but there are fans of all the brands listed. Some of our European members should get their hands on all of these and compare fit, stiffness, and finish quality comparison.
Harris: Made in UK. Carbon fiber or Fiberglass. Excellent fit and finish. Very expensive to ship. Does not cover the SSSA or lower link. Total including shipping for CF $317, Fiberglass $262 at current exchange rates.

Red Fox: Made in UK. ABS. Issues with splitting a few years ago. Not seeing anything now. Don't know if they've remedied the issue. Mounts on top of chain guard. $155 shipped.

How long and how many miles have you had it? It's very possible that some changes were made to help stop them from splitting.
Not that long, maybe about 6 months and a few thousand miles. I have never heard of these having issues, I heard the PB ones were crap actually. Most people on this forum seemed to be happy with the RF.

There aren't a lot of references to Red Fox on this forum. Of course there may be some I haven't found, as Miguel has the search feature exclude words with three letters or less. :mad: I've read more about them on the UK forum. Most of the references are a few years old, which leads me to hope that the splitting problems have been solved. Your updated information is why started this thread, so that we can get up to date hands on experiences of all these huggers in one thread. :beer:

I have the Pyramid.. not all that great... I ended up cutting it about in half so it wouldnt flex and hit the tire. With mods, its just ok.

Since installing the Competition Werkes fender kit on my '09, the road debris mainly flings up on the
tail light and inside of the pipes. Once in a while I'll wipe off the little mud flap in front of the rear shock.
Though I've thought of adding a hugger, I don't see how a hugger is going to stop very much when it's
curvature stops at the 12 o'clock position above the tire?

Travis (rivcyko) made nice fiberglass huggers with integrated chain guards and painted them to match the bike. He also made other fiberglass items such as the bug screen to keep bees and crap from getting sucked under the windscreen into your neck.
I've had to repair my Red Fox twice now due to splitting.
The last repair I laid multiple layers of epoxy/fibreglass inside and reinforced with aluminium.
Since doing this it has lasted pretty well but it only took about 3000km for the splitting to occur.
I'm looking for another option currently.

Same here although I used a combination of epoxy resin reinforced with duct tape on the inside. IMO the Red Fox hugger is too flimsy

I bought one of the last 2 he made. There were a few minor fitment issues initially, but once sorted it's been rock solid - really nice product. I saw one a year or so ago on ebay. The hugger definitely keeps things much cleaner.

Harris wanted about $140 to ship to the USA. If this guy wants something similar it's not a good deal.
To be clear, the Skidmarx is a two piece unit but still looks pretty good replacing the oem chainguard. I think you'll be happy with the final look.
Back in 2012 that same distributor did a group buy for a less than 10qty run with VFRD. Save about $15 or so. Maybe enough to have other members pull the trigger on one.

Believe me, I know. I rode up there with KanadianKen, Dude, M-Crew, Cbar, and JohnE in the month of June a few years back and my bike's thermometer dropped to the mid 30's Fahrenheit where the wind was blowing off Lake Superior....mid day!!!! :wacko:

Judging by the website and the personal domain, I'd guess this is a small business that doesn't do much bulk buying. He's got to pay shipping from the UK so the base price needs to be higher I assume. $15 shipped from FL to CA is a pretty good deal actually, given the size of the box.

Typically ABS includes a central electronic control unit (ECU), four wheel speed sensors, and at least two hydraulic valves within the brake hydraulics. The ECU constantly monitors the rotational speed of each wheel; if it detects a wheel rotating significantly slower than the others, a condition indicative of impending wheel lock, it actuates the valves to reduce hydraulic pressure to the brake at the affected wheel, thus reducing the braking force on that wheel; the wheel then turns faster. Conversely, if the ECU detects a wheel turning significantly faster than the others, brake hydraulic pressure to the wheel is increased so the braking force is reapplied, slowing down the wheel. This process is repeated continuously and can be detected by the driver via brake pedal pulsation. Some anti-lock systems can apply or release braking pressure 15 times per second.[17] Because of this, the wheels of cars equipped with ABS are practically impossible to lock even during panic braking in extreme conditions.
The increase in pressure is the pump. Your hand or foot input can stay the same.
Pump The pump in the
ABS is used to restore the pressure to the hydraulic brakes after the valves have released it. A signal from the controller will release the valve at the detection of wheel slip. After a valve release the pressure supplied from the user, the pump is used to restore a desired amount of pressure to the braking system. The controller will modulate the pumps status in order to provide the desired amount of pressure and reduce slipping.

Of the seven I posted on the first page, three are mounted on bikes. The Powerbronze I posted on the first page is on a VFR800X. The X's swingarm is identical to the 6th gen, so you will know what it looks like from that. The Red Fox is mounted on a VFRD member's 6th gen. The Skidmarx is on a 5th gen, but the swingarm is nearly identical and the hugger will look the same.
Edit: A google search of VFR800 and Powerbronze will yield you several images of the hugger mounted on a VFR.

The brand says RED FOX, and from what i see in the web simpson-detour is the new owner.
The quality looks great with nice shiny finish and around 3-4 mm thickness.
I paid around 100$ with the shipping. Very happy :cheerleader:

Had to drop the rear tire to install it? I like this, and the quality seems nice, but I wish it wrapped around the sides of the tire and covered the top of the tire a bit more. I'm still leaning toward the Powerbronze one ($95 USD, including shipping) but there seems to be a bit about the quality not being there?
@wgregt It is not needed to drop the tire, but it was a lot easier. Also you need 2 min for this. Just put it on the center stand.
I tested the hugger the last 3 days, the roads were wet and dirty and it kept the sh*t out of the tail and the suspension. But i also think that it can be a little more wide so it cover the tire from wall to wall.
I emailed Powerbronze HQ and asked about figment on the ABS version. They said no.
Asked eBay seller same thing. He says he also asked HQ and was told yes, it will fit. So I suppose I can always send it back since he put it in writing now. Hmmmmmm....I also asked about warranty on splitting/cracking. Will post when I hear back on this.

I beleive the issue with ABS and non ABS is to do with the rear wheel ABS sensor wire that runs along the top of the 2 hydraulic hoses, so if the hugger covers part of the chain guard and brake hoses, the ABS wire interferes. If the hugger replaces the original guard and uses the original hose brackets to hold the hoses to the new part, you should be ok. If it comes with its own hose brackets then you can probably make something up to hold the ABS wire in place. I am looking at getting the Harris hugger for my 02 ABS, as this comes with its own hose brackets, then I will cable tie the ABS wire in place.
I have the power bronze hugger on my bike. It's an 03 non abs, but when I bought it, they only had 1 version. It has a little recess on the right side to make room for the remote preload to clear when the suspension moves up.

Took two months but it finally arrived. Some small issues, metal bracket didn't line up and took some additional drilling. The washers with the kit didn't fit any of the bolts included. The rubber plugs for the inside bolts aren't tight, some proper well nuts should fix that. Overall though the fiberglass quality is great and the final fit of the fg parts is spot on. Clearance around the tire is good, not too tight but very close.

Don't both with Skidmark if you want a carbon fibre hugger. I expect carbon when that is what they advertise. BUT what you get is a carbon skin on a glassfibre hugger & whilst the outer finish is excellent, the inner i.e. the glass fibre is crap, they are not bonded together very well, I was able to peel the glassfibre out of mine ! They are also NOT light because what should be 2 ply carbon is 1 play carbon with 2 ply GF below :( Not sure about others.

Can you photograph the hugger so that we can see the repaired split? I'd mainly like to see if a pre-emptive strike can be accomplished by reinforcing the area before it has a chance to split.
I'm looking for another hugger after having 2 Red Fox ones split on me.
I repaired the first one with fibre glass on the inside and it then split again in another place.
Thought I'd replace it with a new one.
Well, after 2 months of use, it is now splitting in the same place as the original.
Sorry but I would not recommend these to anyone.
They are a cr@p product.
Think I'm going to try one of the Geelong ones this time.

I just bought a Harris hugger that looks just like that (very fine quality) and seems to provide as much protection. It was ~$220 (USD) shipped from the UK to the states. That is significantly less expensive then the Geelong...something to consider. Cheers, RRM
I had a Pyramid years ago. 'Had' as after several tire changes and a rear shock replacement, it had crumbled down to nothing.
Liked the look of it but the quality was shite

During my research, cracking/splitting has shown to be a significant issue with the Red Fox. IMHO, Harris is the way to go.

Can choose between carbon fibre or black fibreglass.
I went ahead and bought the Powerbronze one since I love the looks of that one by far the most. Found it on Ebay for $94 USD new. US rep says it would fit an ABS version fine, and it does. I got the white one, thinking I would leave it white on my RWB '07 version, or maybe paint it blue to match the lower, but once it got here I bought a can of flexible spray paint in flat black and sprayed it with that. That way, if I didn't like it I could peel it off.
I thought about swapping it for the black or CF-look one, but the white has been discontinued and is selling for about half of the other two colors.
Mounted it up (super easy with tire removal) and the color actually matches the color of the tire, and it sorta disappears. Haven't put any miles at on it it yet since I'm down waiting on Staintune warranty issues, but I really like the way it actually covers the tire, rather than just running along the top of the tire. One LM I spoke to here has had one for 10 years with no cracks or issues, so that sounded great to me.
Once I'm able to get some fotos I'll post them here in case anyone is interested.
Oh yeah...and the OP said the Powerbronze uses zip ties. This is not the case. Only supplied nuts/bolts.
Just dont EVER buy a red fox hugger cos they are a shocking fit, i messed around for three days trying to get it to sit remotely straight, to be fair to myself im not a mechanicbut im handy with the tools and do my own chain changes etc so im not completely inept BUT after 6 phone calls and emailing pics to the guy at Simpson-Detour he just kept telling me i was fitting it wrong
Its 2 bolts and 2 parts, they may have sent the wrong one but in his opinion it was ALL my fault so finally i gave up and modded it to fit which it now does
One thing I learned, put some loctite on all those little mounting bolts. Only took a couple months for most of mine to vibrate out.

Here's the crack that's developed in my Power Bronze hugger. I think it's hitting the exhaust under load and full suspension travel. It's got over 22,000 km (13,500 mi) on it so I can't complain really.
