No Low Beam

I was driving home the other day on my Y2K VFR, near dusk and flashed my high beams to let a car know I was there. When I pulled into my garage I noticed no low beams, I took the switch appart and cleaned it with CRC electronic parts cleaner, still no low beams. Any ideas. Both lights come on fine in high beam.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Have you tried known good bulbs? Tested for power in the low beam setting at both sockets? Tested the bulbs for continuity for both settings? Fuses all good? Connections all good?

Start with the simplest / cheapest...

No haven't got the multimeter out yet.

Are the low and high beams on different fuses?

Really didn't want to take the cowl off but I guess that's the next step.

Seems odd that both the low beams would burn out at the same time.

Hi and Low are on different relays. If you aren't getting power on Low, it could be a bad relay or maybe it isn't seated well / has bad connections.

I had a similar trouble but with high beam. It was the small spring in the switch which was not strong enough to keep the contact. Just place another one and no more problem.

Ultimately, you'll need to determine where the electricity stops flowing... That will be the culprit. Switch, relay, bulb, harness...

oh god, electrical problems are the most hated by everyone.

had a turnsignal once not working on my first bike, turned out a wire inside the turnsignal itself was loose :comp13:

Yeah.. They're sometimes VERY difficult to find.

If you own a multi-meter (and can use it), and have the service manual (wiring diagram), you can usually find a couple of places to check things quickly to get started.

Well it was simple, need two new bulbs. Had one and I now have one low beam waiting till tomarrow to get another. Ended up taking the cowl off to make the change easier.

Thanks

Mike
