 as some of you know i am whats called a motocicle tech..

 i fix  and build those things with 2 wheels that go putt putt putt .. vrooom.. :wheel:

right now, my little "shop" is in a class room.. i get the space to use by teaching shop in a school for troubled kids.

 allas.. the school has .. NOTHING! 

 two 12 year old computers running on xp pro..  :computer-noworky:   :computer-noworky:

 does any one have a windows 7 disc that has proper activation code ?

 pretty please with sugar on top ????

Why do you need Win 7? Depending on what you are doing, XP or Linux should do fine. XP is definitely long in the tooth now though.

If you are patient, you can pick up Win 7 Pro for $120, or home for $80. With WinXP, there is an easy trick to get around the activation code. Haven't found one with 7. However, 12 year old systems probably won't run 7 very well. That's prescott era I think. 

Go on newegg and look for some refurbed computers. I can usually build a usable system for about $300-$350, but sometimes you can get more bang with a refurb for the same amount.

The only system I think I have collecting dust is a laptop from 2006 that I just upgraded. Might be marginally better than what you already have, but it's a 12" laptop. I don't have any spare windows discs to give.

 the kids go to youtube for music and it takes forever to load.

There may be some unofficial servers too. Don't know about 7, but I found a download of XP that was free, and required no key code.

Don't ask where, I forget, and XP is obsolete.

Better yet try Ubuntu. Note, you will need to summon your inner computer geek. :goofy:

The nice thing about Ubuntu or any Linux O/S (such as Linux Mint) is that there are practically no viruses out there for it. There is an anti-virus package for it called Clam (please no laughing!), but it probably wouldn't be necessary. It's free and there are Linux forums where other users are eager to help like they are here. It does take some getting used to. Installing apps is not like Windows. But the look and feel of using it is very familiar.

Cannot help you with a legal version of W7, but....

12 year old computers will not speed up just because you run (if possible) Windows7....

Until recently I had an old Pentium 4 cpu PC with 2gb memory that I replaced the XP with Windows7. 

For things like email, internet etc, I didnot feel that things speeded up . (that was not my aim, I wanted -and did- to sell the machine and with W7 that is easier).

1st and foremost, what data connection/service do you have?

At home, used to have DSL with -in reality- 2Mb/second download

Now have a glasfibre connection with 100Mb/s up and down cabled (60Mb/s with my Wifi router)

Clean up the machine, deinstall any programmes that are not used, run programmes like CCleaner, PC-decrafifier.

In the unlikely event you still have the XP discs, just do a complete clean reinstall.

I seriously doubt Win7 would even install on a computer that old. And if it did, it would be damn slow. Ubuntu is a nice recommendation, however it's default desktop environment really requires hardware acceleration and decent graphics card/driver because of desktop composing. 

I would recommend Linux Mint XFCE instead. It is based on the Ubuntu repositories, so any program for Ubuntu will work on it. But the desktop environment (XFCE) is much lighter on resources.  If all you are going to be doing is web browsing and the like, it will be plenty sufficient.

Honestly, XP should not be used on any computer that has a network connection. Linux is so dang easy to set up anymore that my daughter has been installing the operating system since she was 7. It literally takes more keystrokes to enter the Windows license key that it does to install just about any Linux distro.

Tiger Direct has some "off lease" desktops with Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) for $99.

I too would recommend getting Linux. You can have a go at it without having to install it, and wipe your current windows operating system just yet, by booting from a Live CD/DVD like this one: Knoppix. Remember booting or starting programs from a CD/DVD takes quite a bit longer than booting from HDD/SDD but at least it gives you the opportunity to get a feel of (one of the flavours of) the OS.

I've been using Ubuntu for some time now and I'm very happy with it. It's a lot faster than Win7, which I have also installed on my computer.

Since those PC's are very old, I would recommend Lubuntu. It's essentialy another version of Ubuntu, just a lot lighter and it's recommended for older computers. And yes, installing Ubuntu (or Lubuntu) is so easy, even a little kid can do it! :wink:
