Well I’ve officially became a VFR nut. Yesterday I picked up my new toy, a red 97 with 19k and crashed fairings. This is my second VFR. I currently ride a 98 VFR800 with 32k on it.
The 750 starts and came with a D&D exhaust, seat cowl, and a tank bra. I'm planning on doing the basic maintenance and turning it into a naked bike. I’ve always wanted to do this to the 800 but, could never bring myself to. Plus the 750 is just better looking naked than the 800 is generally speaking. Might do a 929/954 rear shock swap. I'm considering doing the forks too.
havent dug into it yet but so far I cant complain for $850.
You should make everything you need on selling the fairings I guess, I know CBR front ends/rear shocks for these bikes are more plentiful than here in the UK. Good luck and keep us posted with sh*t loads of pics
Looks like another member of the multiple bike disorder club! Should be a lot of fun. Looks like you hauled it home with . . . another Honda! Well done!
Congrats. With no bodywork left...any quality bodywork that is...making it naked is sort of the only choice anymore. Those of us trying to keep our Gen4's alive will be lurking like vultures when you start offing the unneeded parts. Post on progress.
Thanks for the encouragement guys. Honestly that was the best side and was held together mostly by red duck tape. The usable stuff will be posted for sale to fund the project. It is currently stripped of all plastic, lights, and ready to be pampered. The one thing I've been looking for is the pair removal steps. I've seen bits and Pease's for the 4th gen and have read it for my 5th gen. I have a general idea of what needed but a write up would be nice. Still doing the research for the 954 front end swap. Also looking for other fork alternatives.
Ohh and the wiring looks daunting. Don't know how people tucked it all away.
The pair removal is easy. Find the tubes off the front and rear of the engine, disconnect them with a 10mm socket.
Pull the tank, find the front two hoses. Either plug the airbox holes, or carefully put a cap over the 90 degree plastic sticking out. Remove the two ugly conglomerations on either side of the bike. Ensure that vacuum lines off the carbs are plugged. Install block off plates (ebay gsxr1300/Hayabusa plates work) and put them on. The rear are the most fun, lol.
Here is a little update. started stripping and after a couple hours I had her naked. The bike has been dropped and looks like the forks are tweaked a bit. the front wheel rides straigt but the bars feel like the are askew. ill take the front end apart and see if im right. hopefully its not a frame condition otherwise ill be posting in the classified section soon. i dont think its a frame issue. ive dropped my vfr800 a few times and i still carve up backroads nicely. ill be leating go of usable body parts sometime this week.
It takes a lot to bend a frame. I am not sure what you mean by posting it in the classifieds if the frame is bent. Would you list it as a bent frame? Bike looks like a perfect naked candidate. You don't want it to look like a crashed bike that had bodywork taken off. The goal is for it to look like it was meant to be naked. Get rid of all tabs and brackets. Hide all wiring. Dash and front light have to be correct. Grind off any BS. Tail needs to fit with rest of bike. And so on....
The frame is pretty robust. Have a look at the steering stops on the lower triple and the frame, and post some pics for us. Pretty easy to assess any big damage from that.
last night i stripped the bike more and found my forks are indeed bent. This isnt a big deal but it does delay getting it registered. So im stuck doing a fork swap.
I have a lead on a full front end off a 2003 gsxr750 for $300. i know its the same fork size as the cbr954 so i could use those triples. What im not sure about is if I'd need new spacers. Perfect world would have it be a drop in swap. I think i can get all these parts locally after a few CL searches.
in other new I have pictures of the fairings. Most have missing tabs but are useable. ill be listing them localy and maybe ebay.
Forks are off and currently looking for a USD replacement set. I havent looked into straightening the old ones, leaving thats as an last option.
Also got rid of the PAIRs stuff. All that is left is to plug the holes from the PAIRs tubing. This weekend ill be working on the wiring and relocating the coils.

Mdange
Up around the airbox area and behind the frame is a good place to hide the wires. Save the connectors and label them if you start chopping stuff, later on if you want to know what is what. To be honest, with LEDs as options for any future lighting the draw is minimal. All I found I needed to do was find a hot with ignition on and a ground, off you go, job done. signals and high low beam are the ones to keep track of because they are controlled at the bars.
Been awhile; but ive been working and gathering parts. The biggest change is the 2000 cbr929 front end. The forks went in super easy. Only problem is forks hit the radiator at full lock and they dont hit the steering stops. I read this would happen. Lots to still do but its starting to come together.
Im thinking of switching over the bronze rims to my 98 vfr800. Are the front rims identical? rear should work fine.
That rear rim pictured above is 5" wide and came new with a 170 series tire. The 5G bikes have a 5.5" wide rear wheel that came with a 180 series tire.
Got her out for a fall test run. The steering is kinda heavy when I turned around on my street. On turns it feels as if the bars are pushing back in the direction of the turn. Hopefullly its just a flat center section of the back tire issue (the front tire has 35-36 psi last I checked didnt check the rear) . Any input on the sterring would be good. my 98 vfr doesnt act in this manner. Next thing to do is mount the oil cooler, wiring lights and koso dash, then paint.

Hello M, nice project you got going here, i have just completed my own project, but i decided to keep the original look of my 91 VFR, & i used a 2006 CBR1000 front assembly.
I just need to decide what color scheme to paint her.

As for your steering problem are you sure that your yoke bearings are not over tightened and that nothing is hitting you forks?
Also check that you have no wires or cables that could restrict your steering, i see that there is something routed on the inside of your streeing stem.
Does the 06 cbr1000 front end drop right in like the cbr929 front end. i might do that on my 98 if i decide to keep it longer.
My 98 is starting to have charging issues. I just did a 2,600 mile trip and I have done a R/R upgrade using a cbr600 unit. This bike is like dating a aging super model that constantly wants the attention she use to get. im about to upgrade.

Yes, i use a complete 06 CBR 1000 front end, there was a bit of spacing issues but noting that caused to much concern.
