That looks like a '80 CX 500 Custom, fine bikes! just a bit down on power but quite capable! Another Honda indestructible engine with shaft drive, excellent commuter! To the OP looks like you got a good buy on that Sportster !

Honda also made a turbocharged version of the CX. I believe it was also Honda's first stab at fuel injection on a motorcycle. Way ahead of its time.

It is a 1983 GL650 Silverwing. Only made one year. Prolly very simmilar to a sportster in wieght and power.

man, sportsters are cool. When you just want motorcycle, standard, american. you really get a feel of just riding with no aspirations or pretenses. Hard to explain, but much fun. The 1200s can be quick too. My Buell with a 1200 sportster mill got 124 rwhp and 88f/lbs of torque on the dyno.

The CX should clean up nicely :fing02: , only thing to watch out for is cam chain tensioner issues. My dad and oldest brother loved their CX's in the 80's and that's the only complaint they had on the bike. Otherwise they are bulletproof bikes despite their sometimes noisy cam chains........its a Honda, after all......

Cam chain issue fixed on the 650 by making the tensioner automatic. Thwy beefed everything up for the 650 turbo and the regular 650 reaped the benifits.

Nice Sportster! What size engine? Was that back in the AMC bowling ball days?

Personally, I'm done with HD transmissions, the two Buells I had were the absolute worst shifting machines I've ever driven. Hopefully that sporty isn't too bad. Good luck with the MBD!

White Shoei helmet, black Bilt pants too? Hot dang that has to be me as I did that route recently.

I tried one once; it's slow.

I really like your cx650. I've had my cx500 for almost 5 years now, and it has been bullet proof. It always starts and runs no matter how much I lax on maintenance or how cold it is. Keep the oil and coolant fresh and it will run forever.

Just have to be careful about the timing chain guides. If they break, might as well get a new bike. That part is getting harder to find. I got lucky when I replace all of my engine seals 4 years ago, they were in good nic.

true up to a point. I have a GL, not a CX. Plenty of Gl650s left the factory bound for america with a lot of plastic

Grrrrrrr! One thing that REALLY annoys me here (and it's probably the same everywhere) is that it seems to be de rigeur for Hardley Ableson owners to have either "drag pipes" or (the latest trend) open headers. And said owners then cruise around, blipping the throttle, revving the snot out of their petroleum distillate fueled posing pouches, as if to scream. "Look at me! LOOOK AT MEEEE!!!"

And it seems that the cops and bike shops tacitly endorse this behaviour by treating it as normal, solely because it's so widespread. Here in UnZud, all vehicles have to have a 6-monthly/yearly Warrant of Fitness check, which would - by its legal provisions - automatically fail such noisy beasts. However, Hardley owners know that the same shops that sold them the drag pipes will happily rubber-stamp their WOF test and issue a new label. And so, the cycle is perpetuated....

Bloody right.  Now, the winter 2016-2017 project is complete and proper and precise break in procedures apply.

Lots of money and time.  Lots of money and time.  Lots of money and time.  The education secured is priceless.  Now for the details:  Upgraded to cylinders from Hammer Performance with their 1250cc kit with late model '04+ cylinders, forged 10:1 (static corrected) flat tops, Screaming Eagle ported and polished heads, in house ported and polished intake manifold, Andrews N4 cams, Hammer custom length pushrods ('04+ heads are .020" shorter than the stock '97 heads, and the SE heads are milled .050" so I had Hammer send me .070" shorter rods), Fueling roller tappets, TP Engineering roller rockers, S&S rocker arm shafts, Cometic gaskets, Dynatek ignition module, Bassani headers, and I internally wired the switch gear in the handle bars.  Drag Specialties bob tail fender powder coated, Ryca front fender, Dyna Jet carb kit, Dakota Digital speedo/tach/gear indicator.  On paper, 105 hp, 85 ft/lb torque.  Dropped a tooth on the counter shaft sprocket (28 vice 29).  Looks stock.  Surprise!  Oh, yes; Progressive shocks fore and aft.  As for the VFR, it's one hell of a bike; like an RD400 made into Bond, James Bond.  As for the HD, I don't care if you like it or not, I do, and that's the only thing that counts.

what carburetor do you have on it?

I put mine back to stock to sell and gained back all the low end torque.

If you ever see a purple '96 1200c with dual front disks, it was probably mine :p

I do miss the belt drive..
