Slipping Into Neutral Under Acceleration

well topic says it all...

I personally think synchronize things are off, because I have a hard time shifting down into 2nd when above 30ish.

Slipping into neutral under acceleration can be caused by the gear selector fork being bent or flexing causing the dog clutches to not fully engage and then slip into neutral. Or the dogs being worn. Or insufficient force applied to the gear selector to fully engage the dogs

Probably the latter of those, third and fourth gens really do need a very positive and confident kick up to change gears.

If not done already, adjust the gear lever so there's only about 1 to 2mm of space above the point where your boot touches the lever.  I do this by putting my motorcycle boot in position on the footrest as though I was sitting on the bike, then adjusting the lever from there.

I find that if you clutchless shift and don't quite kick it in hard enough, the bike will "go into gear" but you can freely move the lever up and down with your foot.  If I do this and pin the throttle then it'll bounce into neutral near the top of the rev range.

Thank you for the advice. I'll check out the selector forks and dogs

I have recently adjusted the gear lever as my new boots are quite a bit thicker making it a tight fit, I'll look at it once more to see if I added to much room

Can't check them without splitting the engine. A factory pro shift star kit can help minimize the chance of it popping out because of a light shift. Mostly from the stronger detent spring.

But if you're shifting firm and it's popping out often then a new motor is the common fix people go for.

I had a Yamaha years ago that would pop out of second gear. The fix was to replace a couple of gears, shift forks, and shift drum.

I don't know how much the parts would be, but labor would probable be a deal breaker, unless you can diy it. :mellow:

I'd rather just chop the bike in for something newer/lower mileage.

This problem is most likely due to (previous ?) owner abuse, power-shifting without using clutch.  Second gear usually suffers the most.

No synchro rings on bikes, not like cars.

Another cause of poor shifting or jumping out of gear is previous trys to FORCE the gear lever into gear while neither engine nor rear wheel are turning. That could bend a shift fork in the worst cases.

Sounds like a bent shift fork/worn dogs to me. The bend is stopping the gear dogs being pushed far enough into the slots on the adjacent gear for a secure shift into 2nd. Probably in conjunction with rounded off gear dogs from leaping out of gear. Sadly this is a split the cases job, but not too many parts are required, just a couple of gears and the shift fork. This happened on my Suzuki RF900, and affects a lot of the bigger Suzukis.
