What's A Neglected '93 Worth?

So I have my eye on a white '93 that would be a restoration project. It's got 29k and seems to be mechanically ok but cosmetically it's not great. A low rez video shows a left side exhaust and what sounds to be a fine idle. The seat has been covered over with ugly baby blue vinyl (likely covering rips), the windshield has been painted flat white and has a crack in it. If the fairings are still pearl white I can't tell from the photos because they look dull and crappy and the decals have been removed. I'm unsure if the fairings have cracks but there looks from the photos to be a gap in the right side between the top and middle one. It has the white wheels with the 8 spoke that I know is worth a few hundred (but it wouldn't be sold). 

It's got monster stickers on it so I can only assume it's been neglected mechanically, the question is to what extent and for how long. 

There are a lot of ifs here. What would you offer? Would you even bother with it? I can do all the mechanical work but would likely pay someone to repaint it and recover the seat. 

If you could get it for around $500 you wouldn't be in to it much more than the value of the wheel.  If it's not worth restoring you could part the rest out and break even. The big thing is the plastics.  If they're all present and solid that's a big plus.  I don't know about the availability of windscreens - mite check that out.  There's a 3rd gen non-running basket case for parts on C/L for $300 - no plastics at all. 

With a 3rd gen, you can safely assume that plastics will need to be fixed and repainted - Most are cracked/broken and faded unless an outstanding specimen is found.  New replacements do not exist.

Does the bike have clean title?  If yes, then it may be worth up to $2600 IMHO.  No title - $600 max.

Figuring your expenses to make it rideable and presentable:

Plastics - 800 to fix and repaint

Chain and sprockets - 200

Tires - 250

Starter Clutch - 150 (probably)

Other misc. items - 200

Kickstand shield - Priceless :)

So, now make your decision how much it is worth to you, knowing that you will not make a dime on it in the foreseeable future.

Some consider it to be the best looking bike ever and have a special place in their hearts for it. Especially 93 pearl white.  In this case, the money takes a back seat.

P.S.  I may have a spare windshield.  Come to think of it, a spare just about anything, accumulated in the process of rebuilding a 93.

I just need to fix my seat hump (broken tabs) and the side stand cover (same, broken screw lugs) and it'll be perfect again.  It's got its stone chips, but then I ride it hard when it's nice weather so it's to be expected.

There was a very nice '93 on ebay that ended a couple of days ago (even had the side stand plastic piece).  Asking price was $3,950 - did not sell.   It doesn't take long to drop a lot of cash in to a rough bike - you're usually money ahead to find the nicest one you can if it's what you really want. 

Thanks for the replies guys. The asking price on this particular bike was 2000 but he went to 1700 really fast. I don't imagine him going below 1400 or so. 

If I were to buy it I would not be looking to make money. I'd likely restore it and keep it a while. I just don't want to sink a bunch into a bike that won't be worth at least 3/4 of what I spend (my labor excluded)

Here are the details.

Clean title

All plastic appears to be present, likely cracked and in need of a repaint(although I do not see any cracks in the photos). I don't mind fixing the cracks myself but would need to pay for all of the parts to be painted. I don't know what it would cost to have someone lay down some oem honda white pearl paint on there.

The windshield looks to be factory but is cracked and painted.

I don't believe it has a cowl. I didn't specifically ask but I highly doubt it's still with the bike.

He claims good tires, still banking on needing tires. I can mount/balance myself.

Would need to order the decals. I believe these are about 40 bucks for the set.

Here is how I see the finances of it all.

The max I would spend for a super clean 93 would be around 3000 bucks. Most people would likely not pay more than 2500.

With this bike

1500 on initial purchase

800 on paint and decals

200 on chain and sprockets

250 on tires

and 200 on miscellaneous

puts me at almost 3k. 

I don't think it's worth it unless it can be had for under a grand. I told the guy the "fair" nada value is 700 dollars and that I would give him 900 and he wasn't too keen on that. I guess I'll just let that offer sit and see what happens.

I saw that. I actually put up an offer on that but it was too low so he declined. I would have had to shell out 500 to ship it anyway so I kinda had to lowball him. I'm not surprised at all that he declined, I would have. 

I paid $1K a couple years ago for one in a similar condition, but that included a Pitbull stand, helmet and a few accessories, it was running and had a clean title. But wasn't charging and the carbs were leaking. FWIW.

Still haven't found the motivation to do anything with it but pictures like john's are my motivation. And I do consider the white 3G the best looking VFR.

I'd say pass unless the guy is willing to sell it for $1000 or less.  These do occasionally pop up on Craigslist and you should be able to find one with comparable milesage for $2500 or less that is in better condition although you would likely have to travel out of state to pick it up.
