I mostly use it for town riding and commuting and I'm by no means a hooligan. Steady throttle and brakes. Mostly second and third gear low revs
Is this normal for a 2000 model? I'm reading people getting 180+
I make mine out at 30 mpg barely! It seems to have improved a bit now that I have a non standard exhaust. I'm putting in about 18 litres per refill for a measly 115 ish miles . . .. . .
Any reason my mileage sucks? Never had a bike this thirsty before. Something I need to look at? I really don't ride her hard at all. I weight 15 stone or so but still . .
I'd say you've got an issue if you're only getting 115ish miles on a tank. My '98 Gets around 40-44 MPG at a spirited pace around curvy Southern Wisconsin roads. Maybe you've got a stuck injector or something. How does it run?
Maybe that's just how it is for city driving. I have never really done much of that with mine.

Town riding....2nd & 3rd gear....I think you've answered your own question there.
In those gears, yr not covering much distance yet your throttle is allowing lots of fuel through, hence the poor gas mileage.
Try taking her out on an open roads run, with plenty of time in 6th gear and I bet you'll get 180+ miles to a tank.
My 5 Gen usually gets over 200 per tank and an average of 47MPG. This is with a mix of freeway and canyon/sport riding. Meaning I have to travel on the freeways to get to most of my riding spots. This is using 89 octane, a 2Bros Exhaust can and K&N filter with otherwise stock motor. Additionally this is using Michelin PP3s at 34/40 PSI (F/R). Most of the time when in the canyons, my RPM's are in the 7-10k range.
Conversely, my 6 Gen gets a little less than 200 per tank and an average of 40MPG. With the same exhaust and air filter but with a Power Commander V and using the same octane gas. Here I run Michelin PP3/PR4 (F/R) and 36/42 PSI. Most of the time my RPM range is in the 3-6k range. I take it that the PCV is a contributor of the less MPG but it runs better with it, so I'm leaving it. Ironically, I think my 5 Gen would suit me better as my commuter, due to the better MPG but I prefer to ride it in a more sporting fashion!
Around town with a lot of stopping and going, but going through the gears up to 5th gear and 65 mph for short periods, then going back down to zero mph, repeat, I get 33 mpg. That's with a modified fueling with a Powercommander 5, stock exhaust. I don't go WOT, but I do ride it briskly, shifting usually occurs between 6k-7k RPM.
Out on the open highway at a steady 75-80 mph, I'll routinely see 40-43 mpg per tank.
One way to see if your engine is functioning properly is to check coolant temperature. Does it reach normal operating temperature? If your coolant Temp sensor is out it may send a false reading to your ECM that is lower temperature than it really is. Which in turn will increase the amount of fuel going into your motor, which will decrease your fuel efficiency.
The OPs fuel mileage is directly due to the type of riding he does and it seems to me his bike is running normally. A run out to the country should confirm this.
MPG figures don't really help either...the OP and the rest of us over here have a different sized gallon to you guys stateside so comparing MPGs is pointless.

Duc - that's a curious state of affairs....my 6th Gen will do 235 miles to empty on my commute to work (a fair bit of acceleration using the 4-valve range plus long spells at 6k rpm in 6th). My 5th Gen would be lucky to break 200 miles to empty on the same journey. Mind you, she did have 130k miles on the clock (6th Gen only has 70k). I wonder why our experiences differ.

That's funny, we are polar opposites! The only thing that I could say contributes to less MPG on my 6 Gen vs. my 5 Gen is the PCV as otherwise the two have very similar setups and the fact I really don't push my 6 Gen unless on sport touring rides. As far as between our two 5 Gens, hmm, good question. Was your 5 Gen also a 2001? Could be a small difference between the 5 Gens perhaps?

Mine was a 98.
08 Vtec has had the standard pair valve block-off, snorkel removal, flapper valve & O2 eliminator mods so maybe that makes a difference.
No PCs on either bike.
Vtec has always had better fuel consumption than the Fi.
Ridden in a brisk and spirited manner (5-9k) on the open but twisty road, I get 39 mpg or 16.5km/L on my 5th gen. Usually hit 165 miles/265 km when the last fuel gauge bar starts flashing.
Generally my standard riding just gets me 300km at 1 bar left on the gauge but I just did a 310km country run last Sunday two up and still have 3 bars on the fuel gauge.
I had a quiet but effective newbie rev limiter on my back seat that flopped about a bit keeping me on good behavior for the whole ride but its shows that these bikes can vary so much on how much they drink.
Interestingly since adding a Delkevic exhaust my mileage has increased. Still on the first tank since the refill but on 100 miles with 3 pips to go on the fuel gauge. Odd but can't complain.
So to dlarify - what are considered the normal operating temperatures that were alluded to as having an effect on mileage?
Haven't investigated what mods may have been done yet to the engine.
