Hi all.
I just got done talking with my Honda Rep.
normally he is extremely tight lipped about anything new.
but i was able to get some info from him.

i asked him
Q: are we going to see a new F4i or 599?
A: no not till 08.

Q: how about a replacement for the interceptor?
A: yes. there will be a new V4 bike for 08.

Q: will it finally be a 1000cc?
A: probably not. most likely something around 800cc

Q: i have heard that 2008 is going to be some sort of anniversy. is that true.
A: he said that honda is on a new 3 yr program.
year 1 was fixing warranty issues and supply chain issues. 2006
year 2 was introducing a new product in all catagorys 2007
year 3 is going to be introduction of new models. 2008

Q: will we see any new products this year or do we have to wait till the next dealer show in sept. 07
A: yes, nothing in the sport line. possible ATV(there has been a side by side in the works for a while), but there will be some sort of Shadow 1100 replacement. vt1100 production has ceased.

Q: will the 2008 V4 make me wanna trade my 07 VFR in?
A: shrugs sholders. and gives frown.
I didnt like that answer

Q: does honda read the major forums.
A: YES

this is for shure

there will be a radical new 2008 CBR1000RR (most likely with some sort of traction control) and selectable ECU maps like the new GSXR1000K7

there will be some sort of entry level 600cc, will there be 2? likely. a new CB600 Hornet. and CBR600F5i?
with the new 600RR up $500 they need a $8000-8500 more comfortable 600.

side by side should be out by then.

New V4 Bike.
could there be 2? a VFRxxx and CBR800RR V4 motogp replica?

------------------------------------

i really think honda along with everyone else, are loosing a lot of sales to the GSXR750.
with motoGP stateside now. it could mean that we may see a CBR800RR, ZX8, GSXR800, R8.

he did mention that there are other major things that honda is up against. such as EPA.
so that sounds like were going to see VTEC.
there will also be a day we see some sort of VCM on honda motorcycles. Honda already has a CBR1100XX Blackbird test mule with it.

im just glad there will be a new V4. lets hope that were not dissapointed.
since the RC212V is capable of 230+hp they shouldnt have a problem making the next VFR a 799-800cc with 135whp 80tq

just think
they could use this new engine for 3 new models.

VFR800T more touring
VFR800R more sport
CBR800RR Race Replica

thats all for now.

it all sounds so good... can't wait to see what next for honda! ;)

Time will see. I quit getting my hopes up. Not that I don't trust what you say, but I gotta see it with my own eyes! Thanks for post, gives me a little hope :)
#5
there will be a new V4 that is for shure.

Seeing is believing. I do think all the rumor mongering that Honda is allowing and subjec to is hurting them. Just my opinion. There are a lot of great non-Honda bikes out there now if one is in the market.

Totally. I laughed out loud at that emoticon. woohoo.

Along with everyone else, seeing is believing, but I do still hold out hope and this little bit of news keeps hope alive.

my rep is extremely tight lipped.
i asked him many times before sep about the 07 vfr and he wouldnt tell me a thing.
i kept asking should i just buy the white 06 or should i wait a few more months till sept.
he kept saying i dont know what there going to do.
even the week before the show. he wouldnt say a word.
and then the very next day after the show. he was in for our spring order. so i ordered mine.
and he was like "what do ya think of it? wait till you see it in person, i saw it a few months ago at a demo and man does it look good".
so he knew all about it. but wouldnt tell me 1 word about it.

today i didnt go into details about it. i simply asked him. will there be a replacement for the VFR. weather you call it a VFR or Interceptor or something else. and he said. "yes there will be a new V4 bike for 08"
so i guess we will all see this next september.

my first question was. so tell me is the f4i and 599 dead or what? will we see something this year. and he said. not until 08.

the st1300 has been here since 2003. so i look for that to be redesigned in 2009 could possibly be something along the lines of the xwing v6 by that time.
#12
he also said that there are some major management restructuring going on right now.
the japan vp has been replaced.

Yeah Honda needs to get off their butts and catch up with the competition. IE: Kawi revamping the Concours.....what a beast that will be......and probably much more agile than the ST1300. Honda needs the VFR and CBR XX to be revamped and return~

I hope it's true.

I am hopefull, just managing my expectations. I will keep my 03 for the foreseeable anyway. However, it would be nice to see the VFR bloodline continue. There is a pretty even amount of speculation as to whether our bikes would become more valuable, or less. I can tell you that I would be satisfied to have it just be on the blue book value that I am expecting.

classic.

Folks, Im weeks away from a new GSX-R750. And Possibly a DRZ400 too!

Are you listening Honda?

6 New Hondas in 9 years..... Thats right Honda. 4 XRs and 4 CRs in my youth.....

Impress me people. The last time was in 2002. 954 & VTEC Ceptor.

Quit counting beans. They've gotta do better.
#26
I'm not holding my breath for Honda to blow me away with a new VFR.
In fact if it's demise is coming, I guess I will spend my dollars elsewhere.

If you folks at Honda are listening, Imake sure you pay attention to this.

I will likley go for a Ducati ST3s or a BMW K1200s. Maybe even a Triumph.

Both are considerably more money than a VFR, not to mentiona a bit more sofisticated. Not that I WANT to spend more for a bike, but I am willing if it is truley an improvement.

Heck the ST3s comes WITH BAGS!

I like the VFR just fine. I may own it for many years to come, and The community here is one of the BEST on the web. So the choice, when it comes will be tough.
#27
I've said it for two years, the VFR is done. At least until Honda Marketing sees fit to stuff a MotoGP-derived V4 under the skin of a new chassis without all the VTEC crap. My take on the scene is at least two more years - make folks miss the VFR, then bring out a 140 horse, 450-wet-pound machine with trickery such as EMS traction control and wheelie control, plus the electronic steering dampener from the 1000 & new 600...

The bike will be no lightweight, but I bet the techno-trickery will be full on...and I will be able to do 300 mile days as well as store my weekend gear in the standard hard bags... Now that's a bike!!!!

PS - I looked at Triumphs at the show in Atlanta - the build quality and design quality was crap! And I thought my next bike would be a 675...

I hope something exciting, new, and comfy comes to the US in a Honda 600 naked bike for my wife by 08. Right now she's making do with the Reflex Sport 250 scooter after getting rid of her 919. Women's issues need to be addressed better (IMO). The Hornet 600 (European version) would be nice if they would send it here. I have lost faith in my reps "vague predictions" of coming things also over the last 2 years as I watch them "vaporize" at production time..............we will see...I hope some of the latest hype becomes rideable.......................
#30
well for my wife, i need a full ferring 600-650 vtwin sporty but tourable bike :goofy: she dont like nekked bikes but loves vtwins
i would love to see a new vfr type bike come out for 2008. By the time i would be looking to get something different then i could get a used 2008 "vfr replacement" i guess we cant have a year go by with out this exact thread coming up huh? lol
#31
Honda just needs to cut off a few heads in the design and engine department and get someone in charge who has ambition ...Rumors are plentiful / pics and demo bikes are real, so without pics its just a rumor...

Honda if you do reads the major forums like VFRD , Give us back the gear driven cams and dump the frikin Vtec crap in the trash can.. If a VFR has Vtec I wont buy it...
#32
Oh boy, here comes the VTEC bashing. If Honda is going to do something, then I just want to see it, and see if I like it. Right now, if I had the money and wanted to get a new bike, I would get a Duc 1098 S. Other than that, I love my VFR, but they need to do something new. If they release a new one, you bet your a$$ that I will be there looking it over and probably wanting one.

For those of you that insist on bashing the VTEC, get off of it. Everyone has their preference, and Honda has sold plenty of VTEC bikes, so it must not be that bad...

Sorry Honda...you snooze, you lose.

2008 I'll be looking for a commuting bike. I don't coommute on my bike right now, because the distance is too short, but I'm graduating so I need to buy myself a present.

If Honda comes out with a new V4 I will be seriously looking into it. If it has VTEC, it better not be the crappy VFR VTEC, it better be similar to the iVTEC on the new Civic. If the VFR is supposed to be a technological showcase, why did they go all cheap-like on the VTEC. Also, I will be looking into the maintence procedure for the valve adjustment of the new model. If I don't feel comfortable doing it myself, I will not buy it.

If all these stipulations are not met, it will be a 5th gen, or something non-Honda.

Honda, make a bike better than the 5th gen. That doesn't necessarily mean more complicated. We are motorcyclists, we spend our hard earned money on mods, and don't want to have to take the bike to a dealer for every little thing. Hell, lately there has been a lot of concern about Honda dealership's ability to properly perform maintence on the aging 6th gen.
#35
I still have confidence in Honda. They have always been conservative, but every half a decade or so they do something to get everybody's attention. It has been awhile this time around. I still have hope that they will unvail something exciting at some point soon. Regardless, I figure my VFR will serve me for about 4 seasons. Alot can happen during that time. However, I come from a Honda family that has been buying Kawi's lately.
#36
Honda Reps don't know jack about whats coming out. No one will know until 9/07. The only thing that is for sure is that there will most likely be a new 1kRR, as there is every 2 years and the current gen is in its 2nd year. No one will know anything about it though.
#37
1st of all, let me say I love my '04 VTEC VFR - and my '05 iVTEC Civic Si (hatchback). From what I know, VTEC was mostly about restricting emissions and noise levels, both for the California and European markets.

That being said, if other mfrs are making higher powered and/or higher revving bikes that pass those tests without VTEC, is it really necessary to keep it or even add it to other Hondas? I don't think so. I'm perfectly happy with mine, but I doubt it's really necessary.

Please keep the VTEC bashing outta your posts. If you don't like it, don't buy it. There are plenty of great bikes out there without VTEC, even if they aren't VFRs. Buy something else if you need to replace your older VFR, then buy a new Honda once they make something you really want. But I digress...

As for the 599, correct me I'm wrong but Honda is already selling a terrific new 599 in Europe and Asia. They should be selling it here already, but we all know there's a smaller market for nakeds in N America.

I'll be interested in the '08 bikes, but it'll take something special to make me trade in my current bike. I love my VFR, so the next bike has to be something that really knocks me out. Plus the fact that I still owe on THIS bike makes it less likely I'll buy anything else anytime soon.

It's not Vtech bashing, at least in my mind. It's just the complexity and maintenece expense outweighs the benefit. Also Honda seems unable to design and build a CCT that actually works. That is a non-issue with a cam gear drive.

Owners who only put 5000 miles/year on thier Vtech may consider the cost of a valve check/adjustment a non-issue. But for someone who puts 25-30,000 miles a year on thier bike, it is a considerable expense.

Even doing it yourself, you have to invest in the proper tools to do a valve check.

Besides, the gear whine is cool.

Where's that dead horse emoticon? First, from what I can tell my KLR has the only reliable auto cam chain tensioner system on the market. That's probably because it redlines at 7k and runs out of breath at 6 so there's no point is spinning it to cam chain whipping speeds. APE does a land office business in aftermarket tensioners for a whole host of sport bikes, yet there doesn't seem to be a stampede to design gear cam drives (which would be considerably cheaper on an in-line than a V motor).

While there are no doubt folks out there putting 25 to 30k a year on their bikes, I suspect very few of them are on VFRs. Anybody here have a 120,000 mile '02? How about a 180,000 mile '00?

Finally, the special tools to do the valve checks on my vtec cost me exactly $19.

Jeff its just that the more gimmicks on a bike the more is likely to go wrong :o . I personally just dont care for it, those who like it good for them..
I hope Honda does wake up out of its coma and put the VFR on the 5 most wanted list again in the sportbike section. Would love to see the VFR outsell the CBR....I know keep dreaming.

Well we have 10 months to see what Honda has to offer for 2008 so keep your fingers crossed. If honda dont give something new then i might just look for a aprilla V4.

I think the sales were more in spite of VTec rather than because of it. VTec doesn't normally bother me too much (other than doing valve checks and buying VTec lifters), but I would have paid extra to get a 5th gen motor in my 6th gen.

I still haven't gotten many miles on my '07 but so far the one thing that really bugs me is the very noticeable hesitation right before the VTEC kicks in. It's so bad that I actually rock forward when it happens. I've been riding Interceptors almost since they first came out and a defining characteristic has always been that smooth powerband so this behavior in the '07 is disappointing. I plan to put a Power Commander on it and have it dyno'd for a good map but it's really a pisser that you have to go through all of that. I'm glad I bought this bike for daily commuting and longer trips rather than as a sport riding bike. For that I have the Gixxer and my 20+ year old Interceptors. The VF1000R, now that's the kind of V4 Honda needs to bring back- no fancy crap, just displacement and loads of smooth, predictable torque.

I think it gets better as it breaks in. Mine will have a slight stumble 1 out of every 3000 or so times I go through VTec, and when the engine is cold (150-170), but otherwise the sound just changes.

Ok, I'll give it some more time and see how it goes. I don't mind the boost when VTEC takes hold but hesitation won't cut it.

During the 1098 introduction the only planned colors were Red and the Tri-color version. Based on someone’s Photoshop of a red one to black and the praise it received on forums, they decided to release a black S model.
On the other hand, the VFR design team at Honda sure doesn't read this (or any other VFR) forum.

Yeah, we "heard" the same thing back in '05, then again in '06. So maybe the 3rd time is the charm (fingers crossed).

Besides, the gear whine is cool.

And THAT'S precisely why you'll probably never see it again in a production motor; too much "unnecessary" noise with ever tightening noise regs.

Honda Reps don't know jack about whats coming out. No one will know until 9/07.

It doesn't matter if they know or not. I worked in Honda sales 20+ years ago and it's in the companys' best interest to keep tight lips. If we (and dealers) knew for sure what was coming down the pipe 8-12months from now, it would have a tremendous chilling effect on new (but now seemingly old) model sales on the floor.

I'll believe when i see it.

Honda can design a better bike than most, just look at the new CBR600RR, but they have become old and conservative. That's why my next bike, as an add to the stable may be a Kawi GTR-14 (shuddders can't imagine buying a KAwi but that thing gets me going) or even the new Victory Vision (I know, I know, a cruiser, but at least Victory is throwing something out there that's really different looking without the maintenance hassles (no valve checks supposedly), will have to see it in person before I decide.

Anyway, I would really like Honda to blow me away but I'm not holding my breath as I think I would die of suffocation, or at least pass out. However, even if they do make a new VFR it will probably be in Europe only. <_<

All of the companies seem to play their cards so close to the chest now-a-days.....4 years ago our Honda district rep (Kevin) could usually tell you what was coming down the tubes a year before it happened. Now he spouts off various models / changes, etc. followed by "they think"...they might"..."thinking about"........I don't pay a lot of attention to his ramblings lately.......... <_<

Mine has gotten better with miles to the point that I don't worry about making transitions to VTEC in the middle of a curve. Having a smooth throttle hand is part of the equation also. I think this is more of a problem with riders on any kind of bike than the VTEC itself.

Agree with the other poster....why all the haters?

Spend enough time on a V-TEC and you'll forget it has it unless you read one of these threads.....I go in and out of the transition now without realizing or thinking about it anymore......BLACK 06, almost 13,000 miles..............

:+1: I don't know about the rest of you, but when I hit VTEC I'm usually accelerating hard up to 8 to 10 grand on the tach. I don't notice any hesitation in such situations b/c I'm normally flying thru the rpm range.

March '07 Bike magazine has declared the '07 VFR to be inferior to a BMW 800 parallel twin (F800ST). One of their major complaints was Vtec but the tone of the article made it clear that the writer was predisposed to an anti-vtec attitude.

Motorcyclist magazine (April 2007) had a 1 page piece on a road legal (but limited production) RCV211 in testing.

I'm on my 3rd Interceptor ('86 VF700, '99 VFR and '03 VTec) I would spring for # 4 if it had less weight, less wait and modern components. However, we've been watching the "Long way 'round" DVD around Casa Loca and the Beemer path is looking interesting...

Edited to add...
Wife has announced that only red VFR's are allowed in the garage.

According to a one of my best friends who has several sources at Motorcyclist Magazine (plus he does a lot of freelance writing for them, including the '07 buyer's guide), there is going to be a liter bike VFR sooner than many think. Hmm....

I did a poll about a year ago regarding vtec issues. Most people, including myself don't have any issues with vtec. You never hear from the people who have no issues though. Same with the surging issue. I definitely think it is a minority. I have been watching that issue and trying to understand it for over a year. I have never had a surging issue, before or after pc3 and o2 elims. I have been trying to see if there is a pattern to the people who do have the issue and I just haven't figured out why some do or seem to and others have absolutely no issues and very smooth bikes.
#63
I LOVE my 6th gen. I did not previously have any issue with how my bike road.

That being said, I didn't have any issue with the vtec hesitation. that doesn't mean it wasn't there, but as others said, when i hit 7k, i was normally heading much higher so it just passed right through. but it was definitely there and if i crept into 7k, i felt it.

the real problem was the 5-6k hesitation and the twitchy on/off cycle. i believe this to be true because i tended to be in that range more often and i was not always accelerating hard through it and therefore, could get caught in the range with no has and the lean settings would kill me.

i did find myself subconciously watching my rpm and trying to avoid the gears/rpm ranges that put me in these areas and upshitting to move it around it.

again, this was no real issue in curves/twisties as i was on the gas harder or in higher rpms

now that i have the o2/pair mod finished, i am realizng how much it was impacting the way i rode around town. i find myself enjoying the ride much more. i no longer even think about the rpms at all. it is smooth from 2k up to 12k (ok, still minor minor minor bump at 7k in 1st and 2nd gear).

i would love to ride the 'stock' bike that doesn't have these issues just to see that mine was different because i am amazed that Honda would do this to this fine machine.

I have an '04 VTEC w/8k on it. As I've put more miles on it, esp. so far this year, I've tried to discern the issues most people complain about: Low speed surging, 4k-5k rpm 'dead spot' and VTEC kick-in hesitation. I've felt the surging and I think I can tell there is some slight power loss between 4k and 5k rpm, but I'm usually hitting the throttle pretty hard when I go into VTEC, so I can't really tell if it hesitates. It doesn't seem that way to me tho.

I've thought about doing the usual mods: PCIII, O2, pair valve, etc. But I don't think my bike is that bad. Esp. for how often I'm at low speeds, which isn't all that often. For now I can definitely live with it. But since I'm already spending $$$ on mods for this season (Sargent, Pazzos, sliders) I'm thinking about going ahead and buying the PCIII on the group buy right now and maybe installing it later on. I figure I can always sell it later on if I don't install it. Or it will simply increase the resale value of my bike, maybe even a little.

Sorry, my point was that regardless of the common issues we hear about the VTEC bikes on VFRD, I'm happy with mine, even if it's not perfect.

As for the BMW 800 series bikes being superior, I find that to be a load of crap. There is no way a Beemer 800 beats my VFR. On the road the VFR should kill the BMW F800, and should be much more reliable, too.

I agree. I think the VFR has not sold so well recently, because Honda made them too good. They kinda broke the old marketing rule of saving something for the next model, so people rush out and buy it. It's going to take something very revolutionary to get us all to run out and buy the next VFR, because most of us are so happy with what we have.

(And as hard as I try, I can't stop beating a dead horse. It probably died from overeating, anyway.)

too good is the reason? i dont think that the case at all. the 1000 and 600 cc sport bikes are on a every 2 year cycle. they are so good now its hard to imagine them coming up with anything. at the rate of change they will weigh 250 lbs in 8 years. and people flog for the new one even though they just bought one 2 years before. people arent buying the vfr due to lack of change in my opinion. giving it the Hp of a modern 600 would be a big step, let alone the Hp of the last remaining 750. the bike has everything. the vfr's riding position is perfect, the style is there. but it sits so middle ground that no one wants it other than us die hards (i still want another one!). it lacks the Hp and suspension for the sportbike crowd. it lacks the touring goodies for the touring crowd. the sport tourers are buying the yamaha's and the bmw's and soon the big kawi. the VFR needs a big facelift and advertising dollar with it if its to thrive again.

Too good in ther past, and too good in 2002...

I think we agree for the most part. *shrugs* Bikes, cars, and most other products almost always get better with a new model release. Otherwise, why would anyone buy the new one?

I do think the VFR is a great bike, and you know as well as anyone that this latest rendition is from 2002. At the time, it was "good" compared to what was available.

Honda has definitely fallen behind in the market niche the VFR had. It went from a superbike to a sport-tourer, which is sad, IMO. Lack of change has definitely stagnated it's sales. It's ridiculous to think that we can still buy a new 2004 VFR. You think Honda thought they would sell more? <_< You can't even buy an new Aztek anymore! What does that say for Honda's market research at the time?

Every year, the newest bikes are "the best ever" and "can't get any better". In reality, this is impossible. Mfr's have to attract buyers of new bikes, and they do it with the latest doodads, gadgets, and buzz-word trickery. Your example of the RR bikes is perfect. People flocked to the 600RR in 2003, because it was a monumental step for Honda. They flocked again in 2005, because the forks got inverted, among other things. They are flocking to the 2007, because it got the HESD and a diet. IMO, it also looks like an R6, which is a great-looking bike. In 2009, the 600RR will get another cool thing to get people to buy it. BNG for the VFR is by no means a monumental step, although I personally like the RWB.

Unfortunately, mfr's seem to think the market wants more focused bikes, and that's what people buy. This trend goes away from what the VFR is about, so it sits at the dealerships, if they even bother to carry them.

As cool as a 1000-cc VFR would be, I probably still won't buy it, because I don't think I'll ever buy a new bike. I'm very content with my '97, because it's a great bike. I may replace it when I can't get parts anymore. If I get a 2nd bike, it will be track-focused (and therefore not a VFR), because I can't imagine having more than one Swiss Army knife of a bike.

I, like many others, hope Honda does the VFR right in the future, because it's a great legacy and platform. After a few years, I may pick up a used one--after someone else gets soaked by depreciation. :salesman:

This paragraph sums up the too good thing. Even people with 10 year old bikes see no need to replace them. They were too good 10 years ago and have not gotten significantly better. Not significant enough to justify a new $10,000 bike, anyway. Add in the part of the VFR type population that thinks the new bikes are rubbish and would rather own an older generation and Honda put themself out of the market on the VFR.

Honda will have to produce something that stirs up the souls of the VFR types to make the VFR a heavy seller. I could list off what it would take IMO, but it is more important to note that even if they released a revolutionary VFR, it would sell like hotcakes for a few years, then sit in the showrooms for several years to come and sell just enough to stay in production till another completely revolutionary change happens.

What VFR riders need more than anything is a group of squids to total VFRs shortly after purchase and keep the sales up.

I think what's happened with the VFR is symptomatic of Honda's attitude toward their non-supersport and cruiser street bikes. Big Red has been content to let some bikes wither on the vine. Bikes that don't sell well get old, rarely if ever get updated (ex: VFR, ST, 919) and some eventually get discontinued (ex: SuperHawk, RC51). The 599 got some terrific updates this year but you can't even buy that bike in the US.

As for the 'new 1000cc VFR' I'm not holding my breath. As I said before, I can't afford a new bike for awhile anyway. And with tons of great bikes out there, who's to say we'll all still want a VFR in a couple years? I love my bike, but I've also been checking out the Tuono, K1200R, ST3c, etc.

I've been reading this after having my 06 for exactly 12 hours, and I can't help but wonder what percentage of bike owners are "modders" vs those who buy stock and ride. the latter group is unlikely to read these forums and would likely buy a new bike based on looks and marketing hype of the latest greatest doodad. (vtec comes to mind) The modders will endlessly debate old vs. new (with the extra variable of mods) and never agree while the buy and ride crowd want a fresh look and some new feature to feel good about financing.

After my first ride yesterday, I got off thinking there could never be a better bike for me in the world...reading the power commander post has me imagining issues that mat not exist now or ever.

I'm a competition handgun shooter (IPSC GM) and It seems just like guns to me. Us competition types rarely buy new guns because we KNOW what works and that never changes. We don't care about the little changes on the new models because we're gonna change the sights, weight the guide rod and change the recoil spring, massage the trigger, throw some grip tape on, make our own ammo and shoot.

The mfrs. could do all that for us, but 99% of the handgun market doesn't care about these things and couldn't tell the difference
in a 2 oz. guide rod weight difference. I can. (just like some of you can tell what Vtec smells like when it's about to engage, I'm sure.) they certainly wouldn't spend any extra scratch for it, and would likely buy a cheaper gun that looked as cool.

Glock is a great example. Glock more or less dominates "stock" gun shooting, and they still ship their guns with sights that I wouldn't use to shoot a mugger at point blank, much less a 10 inch steel plate at 25 yards after sprinting 20 feet to a new position. EVERY serious competition shooter who shoots a glock changes the sights. Glock knows this, but the 99.4 % of Glock owners won't pay the extra $50 for better sights because they don't perceive a need.

For another example, I spent an extra $600 on 2 springfield xds for competition making a $400 gun a 1k gun. I did it because the gun fits my hand like it was made for it, and the extra cash makes it top notch for gunracing. Then again, I shoot a thousand rds a week in serious training, sometimes more. there's no way springfield is gonna sell a thousand dollar XD to the sock drawer crowd.

Sorry for the ramble, but it's pretty clear that modding enthusiasts are the minority of bike owners and every company (management) is in the business of turning a profit first. Their job is to make you want a new bike, not make the best bike in the world. Sometimes they coincide, sometimes they don't.

Now, back to the dead horse beating...she may still be breathing. :)

I am enjoying reading this, please don't misunderstand me.

Congrats on the new VFR and welcome to the board, gunracer! Excellent post, too. I think you made a great point. Most of us mod our bikes, even if it's just adding a Throttlemeister or chopping the rear fender. Others mod the heck outta the bike, spending over a grand or more. It's a great bike to begin with, and the mods make it customized.

Personally, I've been happy with my bone-stock '04, but am doing some minor mods for this season.

My advice for new VFR owners is to ignore the PCIII, etc. mod posts for now. Ride it for awhile and then decide if it needs mods. For some people the stock bike is fine. For others they don't really feel like it's 'their' bike unless they've put their own stamp on it by doing selected mods.

And thanks for the insight into competition shooting. I had no idea the little parts and changes you mentioned made such a difference, or that they were so expensive. Lots of gun enthusiasts here on VFRD will get a kick out of your post!

That's an excellent analogy. I agree whole-heartedly. Much of the time, we preach to the choir here. The things most of us complain incessantly about here are nothing compared to the issues other bikes have.

I am of that camp where my VFR was great when I got it. I still modded it, and I'll continue to mod it. :D

First, one of the U.S. cycle mags did the comparo test last summer ' sport tourers' including the Tri Sprint and Duc ST3 - I think the VFR narrowly won, thou both it and the Tri were criticized for design errors ( heat related) So VFR is still at least somewhat comparable to best new models. ( actually, I thought the VTR 1000 'might have been' the best bike ever - but a ' sport tourer' that guzzles gas and has a small tank ?? dopey. And probably just a little too soft, thou it's pretty easy to upgrade suspension.
I kinda suspect Honda had a V 5 in development that bean counters killed, like the Hyabusa catagory bike Tri was developing a couple years ago . . .
So, ( whoopie) I think Honda must come up with a new VFR pretty soon, by mid summer '08 for sure. Say 990 cc V4, etc 520 lb wet . . .
Went to the Ducati /BMW /Honda dealer a couple weeks ago - Honda did not have 1 bike I wanted. 3 /4 of showroom floor was cruisers and dirtbikes. That says something. -- I was thinking of BMW 800, but the new 1200 S twin caught my eye, really like it. $15000. is a lot for me thou. Also like the DS monster 1000.
IF YOU were a Honda dealer, would YOU be happy with new product introduction to get ' showroom traffic'?

very good post but ....

all motorcyclists mod there bike. doesnt matter weather its a rebel 250 or a zx-14. (whens the last time you have seen a 160hp gsxr with a stock pipe on it??? ) almost everyone will change something when they get a bike to make it theirs. so it only goes to reason if you are a comp shooter you are likely to change something too. i have new grips on the Sig and super redhawk ect.... my point is to compete in the market place you wont find LesBauer and wilson standing on their laurels letting the other get so far ahead their gun is no longer competitive or desired. so goes with the VFR. We love them, but 99.5 % of the motorcycle market place walks right by it at the dealer. as far as your springfield xd comparison, people buy that gun because its cheap for its performance. lower the VFR to 1/2 the cost of a GSXR and keep its performance where it is and it would sell like hotcakes too

I used to shoot IPSC 3 or 4 years ago. It was great fun. I was just doing limited 10 with my trusty 229. No race gun stuff for me. Some of those guys were amazing. The range we leased for the events ended up going under after the owner skipped town for stealing money and doing some cons. He was selling 1 year memberships right up to the point he left town. Apparently he hadnt paid the rent in months either. It took another year for someone else to open a range up. I never got back into it after that, just too many other things to do. I have too many hobbies.

This has gotten way, WAY too off topic now...

Very true.

I heard the new VFR was actually a W-4 and that is why they sold the Interceptor name. The new bike will be a Winnerceptor. :goofy:

This thread needs to die.... !!

Anyway, back to plain old boring VFRs...

I did a 75 mi. ride after work yesterday (Woohoo!). I mentioned the common issues of surging, VTEC hesitation, etc. earlier in this thread. During last night's ride I tried creeping into VTEC at 7k rpm to see if there was any hesitation, and there was no hesitation at all. In fact, it seemed like the engine started initiating VTEC a few hundred rpm early and then it sprang into VTEC at 7k. I did this a couple times and never felt any hesitation, plus the transition seems smoother at the more gradual climb up the tach. I usually hit VTEC on the way to 9-10k rpm, but it's nice to know my bike seems free of that oft-griped about issue.

As for the surging at lower rpms or speeds, I can feel it a bit but I don't think it's that bad. In other words, I can live with it, at least for now.

BTW, my new Sargent is great! Well worth the 3 bones I paid for it during the group buy last month.

Or maybe even;

"just think
they could use this new engine for 3 new models.

VFR800T more touring
VFR800R more sport
CBR800RR Race Replica"

RVF800R ooh I get excited when you switch those letters around. :salesman:

Interesting to see how many motorcycle people are also gun people. I'm one of them too. They somehow go together.

I disagree. I'm a peace loving hippie! :goofy: I don't have a problem with people owning guns. I have a problem with irresponsible people owning guns that kids get their hands on etc. I don't know if gun enthusiasts support rational gun laws or if gun enthusiasts think that nobody should tell them how or when they can purchase a weapon. Maybe some of you gun guys can enlighten me. As they say: guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people. Oh, and yes I do have an old shot gun for trap shooting which is fun as hell, but I never get to do it anymore because I so many damn hobbies.

Yea, so I was at the dealer today. The kid there told me that the 08 VFR would stick with a 800cc V-Tec, but there have added a supercharger.

I guess Honda showed us.

Yea, the gun show.

I want an RVF800RR something or other. Then, I can fantasize about owning it while never, ever being able to afford it!!

You guys are pissing me off with the AR talk. No chance of getting one here in wonderful California. Funny thing is, I can go out and buy a Springfield M1a in .308 (which is what I want anyway)and park it right next to my 870!! LOL!! Stupid as hell.

As far as gun laws, I too think that it would be great if no one had access to guns of any kind! Utopia!! Also, it would be great if they had no access to bombs, bazookas, knives (except for cooking or surgery), SUVs, bad doctors, IRS agents, etc.

In fact, I wish the world were perfect, with no mean angry people, no bad politicians, no rain, no robbers, no tweekers, not too many really hot days, pizza all week, no fat bellies, no responsibility, and flowers and puppies for all!! That would be awesome!! Where do I get in line?

I'd be willing to bet BIG money that there is a million guitarists on here as well? Motorcycles+Guns+Guitars= Happy man.

Yeah, I play guitar.

Someone probably needs to start a "what are your favorite hobbies" thread.

Figured one of the MODS woulda closed this thread by now. Probably too entertaining to do it. But it'll likely be closed by morning.

NO WAY on the supercharger. I'm not doubting Chev's word that the guy said that, but I don't see an already too expensive (MSRP anyway) getting a farkle that'll add even more to the bottom line. They'd hafta redesign the rest of the bike, too, otherwise it's the same bike that isn't selling that well now in the first place.

Me? Not guitar. TRUMPET!! (And saxophones.)

A 15-year-old stockboy at the grocery store told me today that the '08 VFR would be a 1200cc V4 with lowered pegs, frame sliders, ABS, linked brakes, VTEC, hard bags, Sargent seat, adjustable windshield, 220 section rear tire, LowJack, loud horn, PCIII, Gattling gun headlights, Ohlins suspension, chromed passenger handles, dual low-mounted cans, USD forks, spring-loaded handgun clip and heat-seaking missiles. And it'll cost under $10k US.

I said, "Where do I sign?!" :goofy:

Well, there's your mistake right there.
You should have conferred with the checkout gurrl - the stockboy doesn't know what he's talking about.

OTOH, the gurrrl who made my coffee this morning sure knew her stuff (made a very nice flat white - that's a macchiato, for you Northern Hemisphericals - as well).
She told me (and you need to keep this quiet, because it's still hush-hush) that the 2008 VFR will come in seven (7!) colours including green pearl metallic (but only red-white-blue for the US market). It will have these features:
  • Shaft drive, incorporated into the SSSA.
  • Top-of-the-line, multi-adjustable Showa suspension BOTH ends (!)
  • A single underseat zorst AND one shorty zorst, a la the RC211V, down by the right footpeg. These will have adjustable baffles, with Sport, Race and Street settings.
  • It will have six (7!) HID projector headlights, LED tailights and indicators, all with the new 'black' lenses.
  • An iPod port AND a Gameboy Pro port AND an X-Box 360 port AND a radar jack BUT no provision for Nintendo or Playstation.
  • Heated footpegs.
  • Adjustable handlebars, screen and seat height.
  • Run-flat tyres.
  • The ECU and EFI will be user-configurable, via a dash mounted lever.
  • Electrically-operated centerstand.
  • An All-New MADASS/SQUID™ engine ("Multi-Adjustable Dynamically Actuated Super Switchmode/Sport Quality Injection Defined®") engine, that can switch automatically from running on all five (5!) cylinders for a burst of power to only two (2?) when in SuperDuperEconomy/EnvironmentalTree-HuggingMode™. This engine is configured to run only on bio-fuels such as CNG, LPG, Perrier water, hydrogen derived at great expense by using oil-fired powerstations to crack fossil fuels, low-THC hemp, used deep-fryer fat, and oil distilled from Little Blue penguins. A Greenie™ option will be solar power.
  • Electro-pheumatic gearshifting, which automatically misses 1-2 shifts, finds false neutrals between every gearshift, and occasionally engages reverse at stop lights.
  • Two helmet hooks. One on each mirror. The mirrors will be auto-retracing in case of tipover or misjudged lane-splitting, will have built-in LED indicators, will be multi-adjustable, and come only in green faux carbon fibre.
  • Built-in GPS. No, not Global Positioning: Glove Protection System™, that deflects bugs away from your new leather gloves.

Apparently, the mayor of Invercargill BackInTheOldDays was responsible for the killing and rendering down (for biofuel?) of several million penguins, many of them Little Blue penguins. Bastid! :pissed:

This thread had deviated way far from the motorcycle topic. I don't give care whether people hate guns or not, I like them, but this forum is about motorcycles, so closed it must.
