It also sounds like they aren't revving it very high, 4,000 RPM maybe? That can't be to the redline with a sound like that. I want to hear it all the way up!

True enough. However, there is a justified concern here: Honda is capable of producing a dull-sounding large capacity V4 (no matter how trick the exhaust), case in point, ST1300.
Now, I think one of the engineers specifically pointed out that achieving a satisfying V4 sound was one of the main design objectives. I doubt a manufacturer would brag about one of the most anticipated characteristics of its product knowing it will disappoint.
I'm confident this thing will make the new R1 sound like a languid kittycat.

As far as the new V4 sound clip, I thought there was a loose baffle in the pipes somewhere, otherwise it sounds good. As far as stock pipes sounding like crap.......well, some people think that anchovies or salmon taste good, others like to eat bugs or cats or dogs depending on where you are. Louder is not necessarily better and even some race tracks have set decibel limits. I got over loud a while after leaving puberty behind and that was years ago. Stock VFR pipes sound just fine, but then to each their own. :laugh: Flame away.

It definitely needs an aftermarket pipe, but I can certainly hear the potential in there for some sexy V4 growl.
I think the sound at idle is pretty cool, but it sounds a bit wheezy once the throttle is cracked open. Still, given that it has apparently evolved into a sensible but sporty touring bike, why be concerned about having the sound of a race bike? Who do you think you'll impress when you ride by with a set of saddlebags, bar risers, and a a touring windscreen? If you want to sound like Ben Spies, by an R1 -- Or a sixth gen with staintunes (minus the baffles)

It's actually not VTEC as you know it. It uses the same technology to deactivate the valves, but it's now used for cylinder deactivation, not switching between 2-valve and 4-valve operation. And it's only on one bank of cylinders, so the front bank is standard 4-valves all the time, with the rear bank being either both cylinders in use, one cylinder in use, or both cylinders deactivated.
And unlike the 6th-gen VTEC, this system activates and deactivates cylinders based on a combination of throttle position and RPM, whereas the 6th-gen was just RPM, no matter how much throttle you were using.
In all honesty the sound is the main reason I sold my ST1300. I even had to make the dealer fire up the VFR before I would buy it as I refused to ride around on something sounding like George Jetson's flying car. Everytime I pulled up somewhere or fired up my bike to leave and friends were around they made fun of the gayest sounding bike ever, the Honda ST1300. I found myself riding hard and stupid just to try and compensate for the gayness of the sound of that thing at idle. Some may think this stupid, but so did I so I sold it and then later bought a VFR after I got tired of the V-twin cruiser thing. I still to this day cannot imagine why Honda would be so stupid as to market something that sounds that sadly pitiful as the ST1300.
As to this new thing, I'll just wait and see, but it's really a non-issue as I will not go back to a shaft drive and unless they have a sport version with chain them my next bike will be a ZX-14 or something along those lines as in fast, roomy, and full of potential for land speed racing stuff.

So you haven't heard a Deauville yet?? (D'oh-ville, as in Homer Simpson's "D'oh"!!)
The ST sounded good when on the throttle, which is why I rev'd the piss out of it constantly. My opint was that sitting at idle it sounds horrible. I even tried taking the mufflers off to drown out the "turkey gobble" sound, but it still sounded like crap. There was just no making it work for me, your results may vary.
It just wasn't easy being named George and having a bike that sounded like George Jetsons car, my friends are as cruel as I am!
And as to "what a gay bike sounds like", well go find a ST1300 and listen to it at idle.
Okay that sound byte kinda sucked. Oh well, can't look a gift horse in the mouth I guess. Definitely some potential there though. Wondering how difficult or problematic it will be to install an aftermarket pipe, given that they'll probably have some pressure activated bypass valve of some sort in the stocker.

The interesting thing with the Aprilia RSV4 that I had with me for a month (a close friend left it in my care while he was overseas, both to ride and install accessories as they came in), was that the bike was relatively quiet at idle, but loud as soon as you pulled in the clutch lever. Turns out the exhaust valve was installed not just to smooth the powerband, but also to attenuate the exhaust note. It was being opened and closed by the ECM at two points in the rev range that closely matched current engine noise measurement protocols. The entire exhaust system has been ditched for an Akra Full Ti system like this one (for a taste of what the aftermarket can do for the Honda V4): :)
A Duc 1198s would sound like sh%^ coming out of these stupid laptop speakers. I have heard my 5th gen in a clip my friend took and it sounded weak too on these poor speakers. So I will reserve judgement, but I guarantee it will need a pipe. My bike sounds like a refridgerator with a stock can, but the Micron makes it sound like mechanical music.

I listened to the clip again using some headphones and you're right, my laptop speakers suck. :laugh:
That thing sounds a lot like our first gen V4's, and my Dad's ST1300. I've been riding my 6th gen VFR for a few months now, and the exhaust is way too quiet, (gonna do a gut mod this winter, still need to do some reading), but the induction side is just pure music. That's what you can't hear in this clip. Knowing how my VFR sounds, and how my Dad's ST1300 sounds under throttle, this bike should sound pretty sweet up there.
And I totally agree, those Two Bros. pipes sound really sweet on the ST1300, in person they sound a lot like a big deep version of my old VF700 sabre (I have a 4-1 and a supertrapp on it).
The 1200 isn't going to sound anything like a Gen3-6 because pulse spacing is different. It's a 76� vee with the two front cylinder crankpins at the same position and the two rear cylinder crankpins at the same position, offset by 28� from the fronts. The Real VFR, of course, is a 90� vee with two crankpins 180� apart.
The traditional VFR sound is produced by its unique pulse spacing: 90--180--270--180
The 1200's pulse spacing is: 104--256--104--256
That's similar to the first-generation VFs, the RC30 and 45, and the ST1100 and 1300 (90� vee, two crankpins at the same position): 90--270--90--270
BTW, what was the 2nd-generation's crank config? I'm thinking it was 180� but I'm not sure about that.

Yes, 180�. The proper configuration IMO.
I'm not a fan of the way my VF sounds. Lame even with an aftermarket pipe. The sound alone is reason enough for me not to buy this. There are plenty of other reasons too.
My first impression was that it sounds like a BMW twin.
As much as many would like to think, there is no VFR sound hiding behind that hideous muffler.

No VFR sound behind the muffler? So the RC30 / RC45 don't count? You're out of your mind. That *is* the quintessential V4 sound, and to say otherwise is absolute bollocks. The guy short shifts the heck out of it, but you can tell exactly how that engine is going to sound at high revs. It's going to be fantastic.

As to me thinking ill of folks on ST's, rest assured that I liked the bike very much with only a few small exceptions. The thing I hated was that WY contains about 95% V-twin cruisers and I kinda got tired of all my friends poking fun of my "jetson mobile" If the ST had the same sound as the VFR, I would probably still have it. I know it sounds petty, but sound is a big part of the riding experience to me.

There was a posting a while back how some user had found "like" noises for stock exhausts. It was amazing how many sounded like kitchen appliances.

Compared to a lot of new sewing-machine stock bikes, I didn't think the clip was that bad at all. The clip was at very moderate throttle - at wide open I bet things are a bit different.

I got smoked by this guy riding a Honda Valkyrie on a twisty road at the Porterville Rally one year. He just pulled away, corner after corner.
I felt better after I found out the rider was the late Joe Boyd who was a test rider for Honda. <lol>
True that I could smoke them in every situation and go for over 300 miles comfortably on each tank of fuel, I went 620 miles one time and only put my feet down once, just long enough to fuel up! The thing is I myself didn't like the sound and my friends adding to it, plus the fact that it wasn't just a group of "riding buddies" it was a very close knit "family" and I just decided to ditch it and keep the V-twin. Besides, I did about half of my riding within 50ft of my best friend on his HD and as a result I rarely used more than %60 of the St's capabilities. The only way I even got that much was due to Dave being one of, if not the best rider in the state of WY. He is the guy who can make a GSX-R rider have to work to keep up with him on his HD1200 Sporty. Man has serious talent, but I digress.

Sure thing Pete, I had hoped that none were offended, and it was meant as a light hearted "fun rant" I have since deicded that it is not right to use the term "gay" in a negative way. From now on instead of saying "that's gay" I'll just refer to it as "that's Canadian" ;)
