Need a little paint help for '96 **Finished - Pics at bottom**

Hello, all.

I am completely stumped about what I want to do. I am about to have my '96 repainted. I am going to go with black, sorry Timmy, not flat black. What is killing me is what color decals to put back on it. Do I go with black decals w/ gold or silver trim? Do I leave it naked w/ no decals? HELP!! I can't decide. Somebody give me some ideas, please. Any constructive help would be much appreciated.

Black & gold will probably look good. An asphault black and a not too blingy gold. Haven't seen any pics of 4th gens like that.

I think you're right. I'm leaning towards black with gold trim, but maybe there is something that I have not come up with that will look really good. I look forward to more ideas! I figured I would use the same gen stickers that are on there now, but that is in the air too.

No decals look unprofessional to me. White, silver, orange, gold, and red all look real good against gloss black IMNSHO. Here's some of mine over the years:

I think I'm a little closer to finishing my project, Seb. :)

whilst it may seem a little drastic at first, there is something about no decals that appeals to me. A guy on a Hayabusa asked me if my bike was a Ducati last week.

Black with gold pinstripes, gold lined decals, and a few accents across the bike, maybe even wheels. Worked in John Player in Grand Prix racing.

I almost ordered a set of decals from this site last night. I'm still wavering, but I think I am going to go black w/ gold trim. Basically, what is on there now. I think it would look good on a black bike. The black interior of the decal will mostly disappear showing off the gold outline. One thing I am still trying to find. Can anybody point me towards the member who makes the RC36 stickers? I can't quite recall. I wouldn't mind slapping a couple of those on the rear. That sounded better in my head. :goofy:

Bingo! Now I remember. What is the "shadow" color on your decal? Can he do a gold shadow so I can match the other decals? I guess I should probably ask him!

And Yes on a few simple stickers, at minimum the tank decal (under the clear coat) and maybe side VFR or V4 clean and simple stickers.
Color depends on what else is on the bike, please NO black wheels!!! Yuck!!! :dry: Silver would be nice and clean and match the frame and every other aluminum bit on the bike and Silver stickers with this combo.

If you do any other wheel color(NO black!) then you can pick up that color in the stickers.

Gold stickers would work with silver or gold wheels. And if you have a gold chain and or calipers then gold stickers would nicely accent even with silver wheels(NO Black) ;p

Also the "VFR" stickers that are on the 5th gen lowers (which I consider the Best looking ones)these were on black VFR's from Canada & other Euro countries and are color matched to the bike paint(meaning the sticker background matches whatever the bikes color is). I used Black Canadian 5th gen stickers on my Gloss black Vtec and the actual VFR is a silver fad to black which I thinks looks fricken cool! :fing02:

Of course if you went with some other wheel color like red, blue, yellow, etc. than you could buy these same 5th gen VFR stickers from what ever color bike that matches your wheel color and the "VFR" would be bordered/accented buy that color which might look cool against the black. :biggrin:

Hey, BR! Hope you're feeling well. I couldn't agree more. A few stickers cleared over is where I'm at. I wouldn't mind adding the RC36 cam drive sticker somewhere. I do have gold calipers on the front (like the picture above)and gold chain...even a little gold on my TB carbon fiber exhaust. So, I will go with black & gold stickers. I still think I will add the same year sticker back to the bike...I think. Alas, I have black wheels!! What do you think, gold painted wheels or powder coated? I think a more subdued gold for the wheels like the Duc pic Seb added earlier in the post...not too blingy. Final thought...I have not done braided brake and clutch cables yet. Do I go silver or gold? I don't want to "OG" (over gold for those of you not from the hood) :biggrin: Might as well toss this in for good measure. What does everyone think about painting the NACA's gloss black as well? Or do I leave them flat black?

With what I want done, I am looking at about $1,000. That is, of course, using PPG paint w/lifetime warranty.
If I didn't go with PPG paint, it would be about $750.

If I was to go away from the factory silver color of my red 6th gen's wheels, I'd use the following as shown here;

Dupli-color's bronze wheel paint. They also offer a clearcoat for wheels which I'd try as well; http://www.jegs.com/...10002/-1?CT=999

Note: Never used this product myself, grain of salt & your mileage may vary.


As for paint, Eastwood offers a lot of options, but if you can't spray it yourself you may not have control over the brand used enough to go with them. Still, may be worth looking into. They have a few different blacks that would suit anyone's tastes, from the Rad Rod Flatz stuff for Timmy, to a candy black that looks excellent from the sample photos I've seen. As for decals, I would try something where you use the opposite gloss of the color you're using, like flat black decals on gloss black paint, that sort of thing.
