6th Gen Custom Exhaust
And, when can you start mfg on some vf1000r 4-1 exhausts? :+1:

Nice, would like to have one of those one of these days. What is your electrical solution or are you not doing this at home? And, when can you start mfg on some vf1000r 4-1 exhausts? :+1:
About 75% of my tools are at work already so that's where I'll be doing this and the power requirements are 230V single phase 110amps. Theoretically I could wire this up at home but it will be much easier at work.
As for the VF1000R... :+1:
So far, I've still been able to sneak the small stuff through at work...

Good thing you have some place at work to do it. :goofy:

It helps to have an electrical contractor in the family
I supply the materials, the beer, the meat and potatos, then he takes care of the rest. I just have to keep the green stuff off his plate, like salads and broccoli otherwise it's a deal breaker :goofy:
Don't ask me why one tube is perforated and the other isn't, I'm just making this up as I go along  I wish there was a way to test the sound before I weld everything together, but I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope I like how it sounds when it's done...

Welder Cart
Nice set-up! Keep posting pictures and updates on your project. Thanks, JD
I built a workbench with mine, and stuck the welder underneath.

LOL Like your cart. :fing02: Got my eye on a new leftover Lincoln 225 at the local welding supply. Trying to talk the wife into it is HARD! :dry:I taught my wife how to TIG a few years ago and she really likes it! So it wasn't too hard to sell her on buying one
Just tell her that you can make some extra money with it and then you can afford to take that vacation she's always wanted to Italy, or Hawaii, or where ever

i am guessing this is for a 6th gen vfr. I was thinking of picking up a set of stock pipes. Gut them and make hi-po exhaust internals for the cases. It looks like you are doing pretty much the same thing.Sort of, except I'm also changing the shape of the cans, the end caps and the heat shields so they'll look nothing like the stock cans when I'm done  There will be more pictures of the progress soon!
Yes I should have specified that this is for a 6th Gen, but I'll be interested to see what you come up with for your version

I tried to talk the wife into a couple of my projects. No dice. Now I just take what I need welded to work. I have everything there. One of my duties at work is I'm in charge of the welding maintenance. When ever I need a new toy. I try to fit it in the buget.
Here is the exhaust with the bottoms of the cans cut off and the baffles plug welded in place. You probably can't tell form the pictures but I've also cut off about 3" from the length.

And finally here are the end caps welded onto the cans. I still have a lot to do, but next I'm going to pack the area around the baffles with fiberglass and then cut and weld the sheet metal in place for the bottom of the cans.

I'm still working out the design for the heat shields, but hopefully I'll be able to get to that in the next few weeks
What I can say at this point is that working with the stock cans is a royal pain in the butt, and given a chance I would NOT do this again. I'm pleased with the result so far but if I do anything like this again I will build the cans completely from scratch.
Enjoy the picture for now and I'm hoping to have this completely wrapped up in the next couple weeks!

Almost done!

Here's another picture with the cans all welded together, sorry for the poor quality I only had my cell phone camera this time. I trimmed the ends and the bottoms of the stock heat shields but they're just resting on top of the cans, I haven't worked out the attachment yet this is just to show their rough position. Originally I had intended to get a little more creative with the heat shields but I'm quickly running out of interest in working on this project and just want to get it on the bike :biggrin:What I can say at this point is that working with the stock cans is a royal pain in the butt, and given a chance I would NOT do this again. Great looking pipes. Maybe for the heat shields you could use the originals to make moulds and lay some CF ones up?That is a VERY good idea... I've never worked with carbon fiber before but I'm sure I could figure it out... hmm, I'll have to start looking into that but for the moment I think I'll still mount up the existing heat shields. Thanks for the suggestion
Those look awesome! 10 bucks says they sound just EVIL!
Wanna do mine, next? LOL.
they look excellent. cant wait to see it mounted

Travis, aka,...Riv, "The Travi", MR. A$-HAT. is your man for CF info
You could probably sell CF heat shields to people who like their stock systems but still want a bit of bling.
Just teasing.
No but really.

I'm hoping to attach the heat shields tomorrow night, maybe get them on the bike Thursday night, and then Friday morning I'm headed out to piss off all the neighbors :fing02: If all goes well I may even have a video by this weekend

For all you folks that want to get into TIG welding, Miller recently introduced a new "Tig Welder for Dummies".......The Diversion 165. I bought on to replace my Syncorwave 180SD which was simply too big and used too much curent for my shop wiring. I couldn't be more plreased with the diversion. A great, easy to use, cheap ($1200), tig welder. Does Aluminum and Stainless steel extremely well. Here's the cart I bought from Harbor Freight tools and modified..............
Those are cool little TIG welders, takes all the guesswork out which would be great for beginners. It also looks more portable than the lump that I bought :fing02:
Anyway, it sounds great :musik20: I'm not sure yet if it's too loud for me, but I'll give it a few weeks before making that decision.
The fit and finish is ok, I could have done better but I got a little impatient with this. I may take it off again when I have time and try to clean it up a little.
As for the looks... meh... I think they're a little too small the proportions don't quite work for me, and I'm not crazy about how the heat shields worked out. What I'm trying to say is that there will be probably be a version 2.0 in 6 months or so
I think my favorite part of the whole project was cutting through the label on the inside of the cans that says something about emissions, noise regulations, blah, blah, BRRAAAAHHHKKKEEKDK!!! That's the sound of the sawzall hacking the pipes in half :fing02:
The welder worked great, I didn't have any problems with it short of me being a little out of practice and sticking the welding rod to the tungsten a few times  I also forgot to ground the piece a couple times and I had the welder set for High Frequency start instead of using the lift-arc feature. For those of you that don't TIG weld, with the welder set on high frequency if the piece isn't grounded the current will attempt to find the next best thing to a ground which is usually you! It's basically like being electrocuted and it F'in HURTS!!!
At any rate, here's a picture that I took with my phone at work today. I will get out over the weekend and take some more pictures and a video. Oh, and I never did mention what exhaust inspired me, it was on a Ducati 1098 but there were no labels so it may have been custom, but because of that I've been referring to this project as my Duconda 808 exhaust... I know it's cheesy, but it was either that or Hondati :goofy:

Duconda 808 Exhaust
(In my imaginary world). LOL. Wheres that damn sound clip? LOL.
I LOVE IT!!
LOVE THEM :musik20: :fing02:
My only complaint about the 6'th gen, is the exhaust.....Honda should have made the OEM like that!!
So since these are the proto types,,,, when are you going into a full production run,,,, "JTG Cans" Has a nice ring to it. :fing02:
i think yours looks excellent from here
The Duc exhaust you were referencing is made by Zard, european company, if I'm not mistaken...

As for a production run... I'm not so sure about that, I owned a metal fabrication shop for 6 years working mostly in stainless and there are many good reasons I no longer have that shop. Trying to manufacture anything in the U.S. on a small scale is extremely difficult, especially in a state like California which is determined to put all small company's out of business. I started this as a fun project for myself not with the intent of producing quantities to sell, but I will at least look into it and see what it would cost to produce a small run of JTG Pipes. On the other hand if anyone else out there has the ability and the interest in making these, by all means take my design and run with it you have my blessing!
Oh and yes, I think that Zard exhaust is what I saw on the Ducati.

Super hot! You should have weighed them from before to after to see how much weight you shaved off. :laugh:And please don't bash me too hard for this but is there an option to pack them with some noise reducing material? I love the VFR's growl without a doubt but too loud ends up giving me a headache and attracts the attention of all the LEO's...

I used the very accurate scale of one exhaust in each hand, and I'd have to say I lost between 5 to 10 lbs give or take 5 to 10 lbs  I have no idea really but it's definitely lighter
And it wouldn't be very hard to make these a little quieter, although once you're at freeway speed the only thing you hear is wind noise :wheel: However around town it is quite apparent that things have become more melodious :musik20:
1) If these were the same price as a set of Staintunes which would you choose?
2) If these were a significant amount more than a set of Staintunes which would you choose?
And to answer the third question for you, it wouldn't be worth making these for less than a set of Staintunes... Don't get any ideas though, I'm still about 90% sure I won't produce these for sale.
if there was a subtle modification to next model year this would fit right in.

+1. I can absolutely say for certain I love these. But would never be able to pay what it would be worth you to make them.

Well, the only reason I don't have Staintunes is because I don't like they way they are shaped. If you "decided" to make a finished set of these for that price I might be mighty tempted to say yes. They are totally unique (except for your set) and there for would be worth the price (just as long as you quiet them down just a tad). http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
I don't know the first thing about welding so grabbing a set of your plans would be pretty useless to me unless I can find a local welder willing to do it.
Looking at the way they attach to the Ducati exhaust, I believe they could be adapted to a Gen 6.

Never mind....$1200 for something that can be found on Ducatis vs $1000 custom built, I think I would go custom. http://www.vfrdiscus...tyle_emoticons/default/wink.gif
Edit: But it would be a tough choice. Can you take some measurements for me?

It looks great for an exhaust that has "been mostly dead all day"...
The CF heat sheilds are a very cool idea.
I might be in for a set too, if you were so inclined to make a limited edition production run.
I'm primarily after weight savings, and haven't been able to make a decision on which aftermarket exhaust/headers to go with.

SOMEBODY DO THAT!!!! I WANT TO SEE THIS  It would be kind of an expensive venture by the time you had a custom midpipe made but I bet this would look great!!
An enthusiastic :wheel: :fing02: !!!!!!
In case you haven't read my other thread, I'm selling the bike because my first child is on the way!! However I really wanted to finish this project just for my own satisfaction :wheel:
By the way, I'm really loving the sound of these pipes now that I've had them on for a while :fing02:
But on the upside I've started working on the tapered ends for the heat shields  This is just a rough cut, the ends need to be trimmed to match up with the rest of the heat shield.
Heat shield end caps
We have friends staying with us for a week, so maybe next weekend I'll get these mounted. I held them in place and I think it will really help the looks of these pipes :goofy:
This should make Timmy happy but I'm considering finishing the cans in either a flat or semi gloss black
In the meantime I'll try to get back to work on the video.
Cheers,
Jon
