I picked up a 1991 VFR 750 last weekend and got it for a hell of a price. Needless to say the guy dumped it..roughly 15 mph he says. It now needs a new fairing set and ebay is starved of the 90-93 fairings. Is there a way to upgrade to the 94+ fairings ? I am mostly concerned about the upper front fairing since it deflects all the direct debris / water from the electrical plugs & components of the 'tree' area.
Can I swap the main stay bracket from a 94 and use the upper front fairing that way ? How about the rear left & right side fairings ? What are my options ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first VFR so i'm all new here =)
I'm not sure if you could use 4th gen(94-97) bodywork or not, but with enough work anything is possible and 4th gen parts have got to be easier to find.

Welcome to the forum. Have you considered repairing your cracked plastic? If the plastic is just cracked, you can plastic weld the areas and have them repainted. There is a new thread with pictures of one of the plastic welding kits on the market.
I converted a 4th Gen bike over to all CBR600 F4i bodywork, and there is alot of fabrication work involved.
Have you looked at Airtech? They make fiberglass repro race fairings for our 3d gens. One piece front fairing instead of 3. Looks like good stuff. I had Airtech fairings on my last GSXR track bike. Good stuff.

Is there a walkthrough on this or is it just a byu & jump in and see what happens case ? I do like the bike a lot. I've been riding it naked for a couple days and really appreciate what the year had to offer. Feels better than my old 95' ZX6R IMO.

As far as a CBR conversion, I am working on that project now with my 93 track bike. I recieved the CBTR fairings yesterday and in the few moments that I place the body work on the bike I can tell there will be some work involved in making this happen. There are a few people on this site who offer advice and pictures and that is a huge help if you are going to do a conversion (thanks to everyone that has answered my questions!). Just remember that there are differences between a 3rd and 4th generation and a CBR fairing conversion is one of the places those differences come into the equation.
Airtech makes panels and by the time you factor your time fitting CBR fairings you might be better off spending the money purchasing 3rd generation stuff from airtech.
Also, like some one else mentioned. You can repaire OEM fairings.

I agree about Airtech but there are not many options for us out there. Please post pics of damage.
The main issue with the damage isnt the fact that it is damaged but the damaged pieces are missing. I have the complete fairing set that came with the bike but the pieces that broke off are long gone i'm assuming. It's been sitting in the guys garage for over 2 years.
The front upper fairing is basically destroyed and what is left of it won't mount back onto the mainstay because it's also jacked up. The rear tail fairings have chunks missing out of them as well and exposes a lot of the internals.
The gas tank has a dent the size of a dime and that is about all the metal damage there is. Minus the broken off brake lever and right foot peg ( rider ) and right peg/bracket ( passanger ) Everything else is groovy. Also the seat is ugly as hell ( gray ) but I can't complain for the price I paid.
OH and the speedometer doesn't work. I checked the cable at the crank case mount with a flat head bit and a ryobi 18 volt drill which went right up to 25 MPH full speed. I unbolted the little gear housing and it spins freely so my guess is an internal gear behind the crankcase housing ?

no offence mazdax.. but trust mne the upper will mount back up you need to bent it back.. but post pics of all the broken stuff.. people such as myself may have the parts you need.. i know i have the whole tail and a seat sitting in storage.. along with the stock rearsets and passenger stuff.. i also have sides.and broken upper.. .. so we can give you best info about what to do.. my upper is busted.. but may have the part you need. you may beable to cut and plasticweld them together.. get my point?
as for no speedo.. there is a white plastic peice that is under the sproket cover.. that is driven from the sprocket.. i bet you thats the problem.. i think its 10 bucks or something.. i just repained mine by fixxing the wornout slot.. i melted plasticinto it and pressed it back into the speedo drive and let it cool.. presto..instant fix.
I am willing to try just about anything as far as the fairings go. I have access to a crap load of machining tools so I think I can tackle some light fabbing if need be. I like the look of the CBR layout on the VFR but I'm seeing some stuff about bar clearance and fork swaps and all that. I'm not loaded with funds to try a in depth swapping of the R1/R6/CBR front end and so forth. I would just prefer to stick with fairings " Upper front & Tail section." and not have to mess with any brakes , suspension or heavy duty wiring jobs.
I just want to make my bike look nice again =)
Also if someone has a brake lever and right rider footpeg they would like to donate I would much appreciate it =D
I ordered some red anodized levers off ebay and they don't fit =( yet listing says VFR - AlL YEARS....Dirty SOB's!
i am confussed here.. whats wrong with the tail? the gap?? they all had a bit a of a gap in the back.. and there should be some grab handles folded under the seat..
as for the front.. you call that wrecked??

I took it with a crummy 1.3 megapixel camera so the damage isn't fully shown. I will find my digital camera ( 12 megapixels =) ) and get some better photos later. As far as whats wrong with the tail end - Look at the black holes. Both sides, Pieces are busted out. If I had them then I would use some quick set epoxy and call it good but I don't even have the broken off pieces.
The upper fairing is busted up real bad on the inside. the little pegs where the screws go into are busted off , the piece that fully covers the speedometer trim is busted partially off , the headlights mounting tabs are all busted off. I'm going to try to epoxy these back on :/ The mainstay bracket is bent in 4 places all near welds and the part that connects to the neck of the frame assembly is broken at the weld and I would bend this back but it seems with the tubular steel piping of the assembly , it is really frikkin strong haha or i'm weak =(. The under cowl pieces are broken at the mounting tab points so I have to use over sized washers to make them stay.
I have all the panels and I thought I took pics of them because they are busted up as well. One more than the other but one of them has the top corner busted off. Once again I don't have the pieces to even plastic weld these damaged points back together or I would.
I got my levers replaced with ones that actually fit the bike. As I was putting everything together I found I am missing a bolt. Apparently it is a $8.00 bolt ( Honda part # 0952416 ) The one that holds the lever for the front brake to the master cylinder. I don't see why this is a eight-dollar bolt but I guess the sellers got to make money somehow right ?
Does anyone have one of these bolts laying around ? If so how much would you charge me for it & to mail it ? need ASAP so I can get this beast on the road.

honda has a weird shaped headlight bracket..
now. if yours is truely screwed.. i have onefor sale.. and a headlight..and the speedo trim.. take closer pic of the holes in the back..

thats because..its not broken!!
if your talking about what looks like hole at the back of the seat, between the seat and the body.. that is a place for a grab handles.. that TUCKED INSIDE THE BIKE!!!
take off yor seat.. your will see 2 handles.. pivot and slide out .. i think you need to bolt them inplace,,the bolts should be there aleady in the proper spot..and then put the seat back.. or leave them in place until you need them.

Use airtech or Thurn motorsports (Germany). There is a place in Spain, too.

There should be a little whitish piece of plastic on the drive gear that the end of the speedo cable fits in. The slot should look like a spot for a flat blade screwdriver...those wear out, or the whole part gets left out by guys changing the front sprocket
you can recover the seat for 25bucks.. 15 for a staple gun and 10 for the vynal like fabric of your choice from a local shop like joanne fabrics.
i normally staple the area at the U ..that touchs the tank first. than use a hairdryer to heat up the fabric.. and PULL it down the side.. stapple at the MIDDLE of the seat not the lip.. and just keep pulling and streaching and heating intill the seat is covered.. then start stapling at the edges..and finishit up by trimming the extra fab off..even if you do this twice..
its much cheaper than spending 300 to 400 for a new seat
I took some more photos this morning with a better camera and better lighting. I managed to get the lever bolt for 4 bucks so i'm happy about that. I got the replacement levers installed and good to go.
As for the mainstay bracket , it's mostly the centrer neck connecter that is warped and sucking everything out of alignment with it.
I also got a RR bracket to hold up the muffler instead of a piece of strap steel with holes drilled. It's nice to have OEM parts for things like this.
Has anyone worked with the old 1992 CBR body work to mate it up to a VFR ? I found some dirt cheap plastics and if I could easily go that route I would. Let me know guys. I am open to just about anything as far as the sub frame goes since you can get them for dirt cheap off E-Gay.
I just want something a little less wide and meaty in the rear but have yet to see anyones completed work on the 90 - 93's with a general technical walkthrough.
I agree with those who say weld the old parts back together, sand & fill, then rattle-cat paint or take to a race painter for cheap.
It's a '91 -even if you get it back to perfect it's not going to be worth more than $3k. Fix it up as a rider and be happy with it.
If you want something that looks "new" without spending crazy money then go buy a $6k R/W/B old-stock Gen6. I just can't see putting a lot of money into an early gen VFR making it look "new" again unless you are a collector. Sooner or later you are just going to drop it again.

Well i've been riding for over 12 years and only dropped my first bike ZX-6R in fact when I was 16 haha. The issue with my current VFR is I don't have all the pieces to weld it back together and I don't care about investing time into it. I have lots to spare.
