With a whole 90 miles on my new bike I decided to let Salt Lake Motorsports (SLMS) here in UT finish breaking her in on their Dyno. It was a cool 70 degrees when we started and 80 when we finished. My two goals were: Finish breaking her in across the entire rpm range in multiple gears. See how significant the hp loss really is in 2nd gear So we rolled her into the dyno truck... All tucked in and ready to go... While we were running her through the break in process, I took a video of that pesky exhaust value. You can see it open at the beginning of the video, but with all the noise from the fans and the bike you can't really hear the noise difference. On decel, at the end of the video, when the valve closes, the bike gets super quiet. Finally, what I'm sure people are waiting for... My end dyno results... Here's the graph for a 4th gear pull from roughly 2K to redline. (139.89hp) I've found that the dyno at SLMS tends to be a bit conservative, so the 140hp seems right in line of where it should be. Note that we were at roughly 135mph in 4th gear. Finally, we clicked her down to 2nd gear and did another run... Ouch... You can see the GIANT flat spot in the curve where Honda basically says f'you... I kind of wish Honda would let me control the bike with my throttle hand instead of taking control away from me the rider. I'm perfectly comfortable spinning up the rear tire on corner exits, I guess I'll just have to do it in 3rd gear. Hopefully a little Power Commander action will be able to fix this. On a final note... I don't have torque curves this time because we didn't feel like ripping the body work off to get to the ignition where we'd normally get an rpm reading from. We need engine speed if we're going to figure out torque. Maybe next time!

THanks for sharing! If you get it on the dyno again could you do a run with the flapper cable disconnected?

edit: add me to the list of people who are pissed about Honda's "traction control for dummies". I thought this bike was meant for experienced riders?

If you say so. Sounded to me like you could, both accelerating and decelerating. Whatever; the sound with it at full throttle and the flapper open was OK. :fing02:
Almost as good as a 5th Gen....

Thanks for sharring your dyno results, very interesting...

Did the "Dyno Truck" have any forced fresh air venting?
If not, at 200+ CFM I bet the oxygen was used up quickly...

You must not have read anything about the VFR1200F, it is the sport tourer that anyone can ride, even a woman.
Now I can see how they did it.
I can't get the front wheel off the ground with the throttle alone on my VFR1200F like I can with my Blackbird.

I know a few women who could ride circles around every member on this board, and there are several women members of this board too - so just keep that kind of comment to yourself please - it does not represent vfrd.

Absolutely... It has some huge fans and is downright windy in there when everything is fired up... Reminds me of some of the server rooms at Sun when I was working in Colorado.

Well, that answers the question as to why Honda put such a small gas tank on it! :goofy:

Can somebody post the electrical scematics from the VFR 1200 f please ? there must be a way to fool the ECU thinking its in 3 gear all the time. I had the same thing done for my GSXR1000.

Wow!!! I really appreciate that... It looks like we got very similar power out of our bikes...
It's VERY interesting to note, that the torque curve actually goes DOWN from 3K to 5.5K...

As far as fooling the bike into thinking that it's in a higher gear all the time, there have been TRE's available for Suzuki's for a long time. Suzuki's use a timing retard system for a variety of reasons in the lower gears. The TRE is a Timing Retard Eliminator that sends a signal to the ECU telling it that it's in a higher gear all the time.

Thank you very much for sharing the dynographs.

To do for me :
get rid of the speed limiter of 250 km/h ( I get blown away by GSXR600 bikes :(
get rid of the power limitations in 1st and second gear.

Can some tell how the speed limiter works ? is it initated bij the 6th gear signal or by the speed / rev signal ??
Thanks in advance !!

Hi Kerst,
I read about some politicians wanting to increase the speed limit but surely not over 250?

That was how the bike was presented at the International Motorcycle show, they said "Even a woman could ride it"
The women around this board know I am not directing that statement att them.
You, a man worrying about it leads me to think differrently about you.

Wonder what is causing the bucket in the torque curve between 4 and 6k rpm in the 3rd and 4th gear runs?

What about 1st gear--does it have torque limiting bucket like the 2nd gear also?

Looks like 9k rpm is the shift point if making a shift chart for maximum acceleration/track purposes. Actually you will never feel the 2nd gear hole because you will be above 6k after the 1-2 shift, and a WOT acceleration run will keep you above 6k rpm in all the gears anyway so it's nothing to worry about (i.e. the 15 hp difference at 5k rpm vs the 135hp at 9k).

You will need some big ones to be riding it at the upper power levels, so, for those about to rock, i salute you...

I wouldn't worry about the flat spot too much, it will eventually be defeated by someone or some company out there that will come up with an electronic "countermeasure". Anyway, the 7th gen seems to have mountains of power and torque as it is :fing02: , compared to our comparatively weenie power-wise earlier VFRs.

Cool down you guys, the advertisment comment was aimed at seat height and the weight balance of the bike..

Maybe someone needs to rag on Honda or the MC show for stereotyping women as short.

Anyway, someone will probably come up with an easy way to fill in the hole in the torque curve soon. :comp13:
