This is somewhat related and continued from my previous thread on this forum at Jet Kit Sucks Gas
Here is the update for Stage 1:
The fuel mileage on my '96 viffer was in the low 30's (e.g. fuel light on at 128 miles, 4.2 gallons to fill) which seemed unusually low for a 750. It has a KN air filter and 2Bros pipe and 3-piece luggage, otherwise stock configuration as best i can tell.
So to investigate this mess i pulled the carbs and found some sort of aftermarket "jet kit" had been installed: thinner two-taper stepped needles, 124 mains, 42 pilots and 2-5/8 turns out on the pilot screws.
My first adjustment was to put the pilot screws at 1-5/8 turns. Now after 4 fill-ups i'm averaging 37.7 mpg, and my fuel light came on at 185 miles last tank. So this one adjustment has helped improve mileage by ~ 23%.
Stage 2 will be to drop down to 38 or 40 pilot jets &/or bigger air jets, and open the pilot screws as necessary. Stage 3 would go back to OEM needles and tweak the main jet. Ultimate goal is to get the range up to 225 miles or more before the fuel light comes on.
The bike was ridden the same before and after this adjustment. Using pure gas, no ethanol. These are mostly commuting miles on the highway and i short-shift between 5-6k rpm with very little if any WOT. The chain gets oiled (90W gear oil) every day that it's ridden about 60 to 80 miles. Tires are kept full of air.
