Rumours of a new Honda RVF

This week's AMCN magazine has a "scoop" story about how Honda has just applied for the RVF trademark again.

The rumours are that this will primarily be to service the needs of the 2012 MotoGP privateer field using 1000cc production based engines, calling their 1000cc machine an RVF. They then speculate a potential road going RVF bike again, with accompanying digital mockups. The rumours continue, to say that they will kill off the CBR Fireblade and replace it with the road going RVF

It would be awesome news if true. Most folks here have said what they really want from Honda is a new V4 sportsbike and this could be it.

Perth Street Bikes forum is also talking about it.

The problem with Honda making an RVF1000 is that it makes too much sense, especially in lieu of the 2012 Moto GP rules. This obviously means they'll just ramp up production on the DN-01 and the V4 supersport from Honda will remain a wet dream for us all...

Ahhh, us Honda fans have become so cynical over the years thanks to Honda ignoring us!

I would love to see Honda or another Big 4 manufacturer mass produce a 1k V4 sportbike. Sure Aprilia is making one, but without a large dealer network I don't see it catching on here.

Of course, the same would probably be true if a Big 4 company made one, too. It's just too 'different' since it seems like so many sportbike buyers in the U.S. are conformists and only want inline 4's like all their buddies have.

Or am I being too cynical?

If it's wickedly fast enough, it will catch on. Much like the BMW S1000RR - that bike is droolworthy and has sold very well.

So if Honda brings out a 1000cc V4 with all the trimmings (ABS, TC, etc) then they could quite literally create another cult icon. It remains to be seen if they have the balls to do it.

But, please let the ABS be optional!!!

You should be able to turn off ABS on sportbikes IMO. Granted, ABS (and race ABS) is much better than it used to be, but users should still be able to switch the system off if they so desire.

Personally I think this would fall in the range of you can please some of the people all the time but not all the people all the time. If they do come out with a V4 sportbike, then there will be those on here who will complain because honda didn't take their exact wants into account. There will be griping about how uncomfortable it is and how they should have made it more for touring. Would I love to see a V4 superbike? YES, definitely. Would I buy it simply because it's Honda and V4, no, I'd shop and compare to see what really is best for what I needed.

Well, they already have one new sport touring bike, and apparently a touring bike with a V4 on the way. I don't think we need a VFR1000 thats in the same vein as the VFR800. I think relatively low production homologated race bike(like the RSV4 factory, and sell it for around the same price)makes more sense. I don't know if they can use the basic engine architecture from the VFR1200 as the basis for this bike, but it would certainly save them some money which would make it more feasible to put into production.

If Honda builds an RVF1000 for less than 20K that is comparable in performance to the RSV4 factory or S1000RR, I will do whatever I can to get my hands on one!
#12
There are rumor drawings/3d renderings of this beast? Scan and post please.

I share the same thoughts... is there anybody out there that would like to purchase a kidney?

That picture was released a few years ago IIRC. Hopefully it's not a rumor this time.

Actually, I'll pray it doesn't look like that! I'd prefer it looking more like this...

Ok, I'll take the brakes (radial mount behind the axel) from the bottom pic and I'm sure the traditional swingarm is lighter than the SSSA but you can keep the KTM orange black scheme and put the personalized plates on the RWB model "CC's RVF"
#19
The orange one is just an RC212V with the repsol livery removed and headlights and mirrors photoshopped on. Looks like it would be easy peasy for mother Honda to put into production doesn't it? The only thing I'm not feeling (besides the color) are the little squinty headlights. Some foxeyes or dual rounds would be a great tribute to the RVF's of the past.

Lets say they make it. Will you sell your VFR to buy one?

Let me start Timmy by saying that your new avatar is more than a little disturbing

Anyway, to answer your question, probably not - needs to be sports-touring orientated for my dollars. That's why I'm still excited about the Honda V4 dual-sport which has been reported as being on the drawing board.

HRC is celebrating it's 50 year aniversary so who knows what they have lined up for next year. There will at least be a new NRS250.

NRS 250? There never was an NRS before was there? I mean we all know about the NSR 250, but not the NRS 250...

Maybe they're trying to create a bike that would meet suspected Moto1 regulations?
#24
from OzVFR email list:

Quote

Well the horror reports that Honda let the trademark on "RVF" lapse in 2006 but took it out again last month. That's the only fact... the rest is speculation... and that is that Honda will run a prototype 1000 in MotoGP
2012 rules, but will also want to cover the "claiming rules" angle, since the production based engine entrants will have 3 more litres of fuel per race and twice the engines to burn in a season than the prototypes. So the theory is that they will produce an RVF1000 to, if nothing else, use that as the basis for their "claiming rules" entry to go head to head with the S1000RR and RSV4 should that "formula" prove to have some advantage over the prototype machines.

Yeah, I meant new as in new model. The NSR has a two stroke engine, this will be a four stroke.

edit: mixed up the names

A NSR has a 2 stroke engine, and from what I know Honda dont make 2 strokes anymore...
so You say the NRS is a four stroke, like the old NRs...

With all the sellers remorse I have everytime I see an old VF or VFR I can honestly say that what Molly is worht with a salvage title (5 days under water before I rescued her) that she aint leaving my garage unless one of my sons eventually wants her.

We finally got Minicarvers VF500F running and went down to Pine Mountain before Ileft for Phoenix and I thought my chest was going to explode as I rode with him and coached his improvement.

We even swapped bikes for the 3 mile ride home from the last gas stop. :fing02:

He is hooked.

So I will add a V4 RR but wont part with my VFR800.

They could use the VFR1200 engine.

If I remember correctly, the engine's crankcase has another mini crankcase bolted on that links to the shaftdrive. Remove this mini one and you can fit a chain drive....

You are correct. The "side gear case" houses the drive gears as well as the main coil spring drive damper.
#41
If they use the 1200 engine, I would think they would make it a blackbird instead. Not sure how much sense that would make though. Just hope that it's not something to compete with the B-King.

Has anyone seen the Ninja 1000? looks nice. $11k base, aimed at "supersport style" with comfortable ergos...it doesn't have a V4. But that's about it!!

Maybe they can use the 1200 engine as a base, then shrink the bore and stroke down to a 1000. Its going to need proper DOHC heads as well. Has anyone ever actually seen an RC212V engine anyway? Can't find a picture of it anywhere online, though I've found quite a few pics of the RC211V 5 cylinder.

You've all got it wrong, this is the new 2012 RVF aka RC50:

[image: Attached Image: Honda RC50 2011.jpg]

You can see the gin-u-wine VFR motor. My local Powerhouse dealer says the VFR motor is a so-called "world" motor capable of displacements from 800cc to 1500cc. Make mine 1000cc!
#45
Much as i love my 12 - i would seriously consider a road going RVF. I missed out on the RC30, i came close to a RC45. I won't miss out again.

That is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

If something like that were produced, I wonder how much it'd cost. $20k?
