Fake Ohlins forks

I painted a set of CBR 1kRR forks to look like fake Ohlins forks last night. Used House of Kolor Pagan Gold kandy on the uppers and HOK fine Orion Silver on the lowers.

EDIT 11-12-10: Assembled! I mixed some 7.5wt oil since the dealership only had 5 & 10... removed the oil lock, bumped up the oil height(reduced the air gap) for bottoming resistance, thorough clean & polish on all parts. :fing02:

Nice, but now there will be a rash of cheap Ohlins forks popping up on eBay with Showa or Kayaba part numbers under the gold paint.

I wanted to send them out for anodize, but that proved to be out of my budget. The quart of Kandy paint cost $50, the silver was left over from some other job so no cost there.

I think I have some real Ohlins stickers floating around in my toolbox, not sure I want to go that far though. :biggrin:

Do you anticipate any problems with stiction or any other problems resulting from the finish maybe not being as smooth as the original coatings on the forks?

I didn't make any alterations to the fork tube itself, just cosmetic changes on the outside of the slider and the fork bottom(these are USD forks).

The tube is masked off with the blue tape you can see there, and I did a careful job of backtaping the sliders so no paint would get inside. . :fing02:

will the clamps ruin the paint job? and will it hold them with out making wrinkles??

i know you have to spread the clamp a little to get them in the bottom.. but will it hold them??

i know you have to spread the clamp a little to get them in the bottom.. but will it hold them??

It should be fine. I've seen painted uppers done before, on non-trailer queen bikes, and it's held up. Yes, I'll have to spread the clamps a bit and maybe grease the tubes to slip them in easier and without scratching them.

I'll let you know on the decals.

The cost will likely depend on who does the coating. The guy that I'm using now doesn't know of any powders that are a match for the gold anodize look, although there is "talk in the PC community" of developing such a powder.

In case anyone wants to know, I prepped the tubes with scuffing paste and a grey(fine) Scotch-Brite cloth, then they were shot with 4 light coats of the Pagan Gold kandy which was mixed with an extra .5 part of reducer to thin it out more.

I'll post more pics of the forks after I get them assembled.

Prep described above. The only "secret" here is that I started with a part that has a machined finish. That gives it a deeper, more 3 dimensional look.

Have Dremel, will travel? I could bring it down at the next TMAC I make it to, or you could send your fender up here when the snow hits the ground?

I have a dremel. I used it mainly in my car days. I cut out many bodies but I couldnt do the fender like you. You da man.

Fork you :laughing6-hehe: I get it :laughing6-hehe: it's funny because he he used the word "fork" instead of the other work (which is naughty) and it nade it funny :laughing6-hehe: although the added picture of the forks was great :laughing6-hehe: and painted flat black to boot, which gives it deeper meaning :laughing6-hehe: OMG you guys are the best.

Speaking of flat black, I think I would like to see some ghosted skulls worked in to the paint job you have. If I owned it that is, just my thoughts.

This very cool. My question/concern is sliding those into the trees w/out scratching them after all that work. I think I would be paranoid and end up detailing the inside of the clamps, sprinkling them with holy water and have a strong Jack and coke standing by... to celebrate with or numb the pain if even one itty bitty scatch happens.

I powered almost everthing on a old SECA 900 some years back. It turned out hard as nails but the colors were a bit limited then. And it was all free, a friend owed me big time and pulled some strings I never saw the tab.

Keep it going, there has to be at least one other part that NEEDS to be painted the same color just to bring it all together.

So are they more yellow than you wanted them? Figured the thinner didn't help, but they don't look as bright as I first thought they would.

A bit, yes. I think they look great though. In person, they're as close to gold anodize as it gets, without actually anodizing them. :wub:

Getting something clear or black anodized is usually a bit cheaper for small parts, as most industrial places just throw the small stuff in with the big parts to save cost and whatnot. Colors are usually too specific to do the same with.
