Hi Guys

I need your help.

I bought a Japanese spec VFR 800 VTec, and found that it has a speed restriction of 112mph/180kmh, regardless of what gear/revs.

How do I remove/ derestrict it?

I've searched on this forum, and found nothing. Google searches got me a few pic's and an explanation on removing a bridge on the speed curcuit board (next to J2, if that means anyting), but it's not to clear.

I don't want to break anything, so I hope you knowledgeable folk can help me out.

TIA

Huh...that sucks. Mine is limited to about 150 mph but that's just because that is about as fast as she will go. :goofy:

Good luck with that one.

Here is a link to the pic's where the limiter is supposedly removed by removing a jumper.

http://zensan.jp/sub00_1.html

Based on the link you just posted I'm not sure I understand your issue. The pic is small, but "removing the jumper" simply entails taking off a piece that is connecting two pins on the board so they are no longer together. Does that make sense?
#6
You could heat it up and desolder it.

IF it works and you can go faster it's solved. If not just resolder... Weird?

I hate to be the one to say it, but is this a track bike?

Well, I really don't wanna start talking out my backside here, but probably not......... I dunno, I was watching Top Gear where they took a GT-R to the track in Japan and the speed limiter turned itself off. Maybe this is just a feature of that particular car though, I'm not sure exactly how that works. If somebody here that is more familiar with Japan's speed limiting laws and how the GT-R changes itself once it gets to the track, please educate me, I really don't know.

Either way, dude really, 112MPH, I hit that merging on the highway around here!!!!!!!!!! :comp13: :cheerleader: :bliss:

Aww, come on now. I'm not an unsafe rider and I've never gotten a ticket while on the bike, but I'd be willing to bet 98% of the people on this forum have gotten their VFR over 112mph. (I usually do it shifting from 3rd to 4th gear)

If I had a jap spec VFR I'd want to take the speed limiter off. Any machine I own I want to be able to take it to it's max performance in all areas, even if I never actually do it. My Dodge Ram has a speed limiter at 120 mph. I've owned it for 5 years never had it over 100mph, but one day I'd like to get a Superchip for it and one of the things I would do with it is remove the speed limiter, even though I can never see myself ever taking my truck over 100mph.

I reckon J2 isn't connected from the start of picture 1. There is only a small hole on the righthand side of J2 on the right side connector, and as far as i can see on the 2nd picture the hole is taken out or made bigger. J2 isn't connected from the start. Help me out oaks,i'm desprate!

I had our translator here at work review it, the google translation is pretty close

you need to cut the jumper at J2 (this is for the tachometer) with a small pair of diagonal cutters just as Canuck suggested.

Do not enlarge any hole that you see.

You stated that "you reckon J2 isn't connected from the start", does that mean that you are only guessing that it is not corrected because he has already snipped it in his 4th picture and the 5th pic only show a close up this area?

It needs to be cut for (as google translation puts it) the path toward full power

Let us know after you have it out and snip it. It does say to be careful that the board is silk screened (printed) so use a sharp pair of cutters or if you want take a hot soldering iron to it as suggested above as well.

I'm not saying I have never taken the VFR above 112 while on the street (nor am I admitting that I have, for all the LEO's out there), but if it involved cutting a jumper I was only 95% sure wouldn't screw anything else up, it is something I could live with.

And just because I may or may not have speeded on public roads and gotten away with it doesn't make it right or even safe.

Thanks for the tip Captain Obvious, but you can't straddle the fence if you're gonna play the safety card. You going to be that guy or not? :goofy: <----- see smiley

That translation was hilarious, well worth the effort. Not sure a jumper connected to the tachometer would be a speed limiter though. I would guess it would be more of a rev limiter, don't you think? At any Case I wouldn't trust that translation.....unless of coarse, it was written on silk.....maybe.
Cup of tea anyone?

Already did the remove the J2 jumper thing! So by tonight i will know if it worked! Fingers crossed! Whoop whoop! 240km.p.h here i come!

Neil, so how'd it go?
:squid: :goofy:

I may or may not have gotten mine to 150 indicated or thereabouts but the thought of being clocked at that speed just takes all the fun out of the experience. For me. But for what it's worth, it may or may not have been fun while it lasted.

Wow, trying to keep up with the safety Nazi's here and then the group that racks up the mileage...and then the high speed junkies...

I am glad I have my speedo healer set to OVERDRIVE my speedo (and therefore ODO) by 63.7%.

:offtopic:

At my last track day I was able to safely go 394 mph while adding an additional 349.8 miles to the odo wihtout a valve check...

Let us know soon Niel....before we contact your local constabulary to see if you were rounded up under some new SA Super Speeder Law. :fing02:

It is GPS controlled. It knows where the car is. Ferrari has the same thing.

112mph is pretty low.

How about used meter from europe or canada? or somewhere near to you? bike junkyard or classifieds for a wrecked one parting out just replace the meter with a non limitered circuit board?
good luck

I also found this info on the differance on the cbr and a mod that was tried. lot of things are not the same as US/EURO models

Have you considered a US ECU?
There are some on eBay right now.
In any case, I don't think that the rev limiter would be in the dash any way.
If it's anywhere it's in the ECU.

Hi Gents, okay, its morning here in Sunny SA! And i feel like riding again! YAY! Thanks you guys! You make a difference! I consider you all as good men! Took a look at all the stuff u said, and i think its in the ECU! But then again,if i replace the ECU,would the ECU comunicate with the ignition and speedo? Because how does the HISS work?! Does the ECU/ignition and speedo work together as a "HISS"?

I dont think the hiss will function with a us ecu, but some euro models have hiss so that may might be a better option
From what I read the wiring harness and ignitons are not the same.
Only here say and I have no first hand knowledge so I could be way off!!
the cbr mod is just cutting a wire at the ecu and soldering it to another, you can see that here. http://cbrforum.com/...ad.php?p=967787
perhaps the mod is simular for yours

Good luck!!!

Thanks Y2K! I'm gonna try it now,i'll have a look and see if the wiring is the same! I'll keep you updated! Okay okay, maybe there is still hope out there!

Don't give up.
It's a challenge - Makes life more fun.

As I see it, you have two options. Through some money at it and buy a euro cpec ECU. Either that will solve your problem or you'll end up with an expensive paper weight.
Or you can do some research, get the wiring layout of the ECU and figure this out on your own.

If you are still interested...

I have jap spec VFR VTEC.

FYI not only your bike is limited to 180 km/h max speed, but she also has only 80 ponies (that is how they run things in Japan) . GSX-R1000 has only 100hp there.
;))

However, it is possible to derestrict it. I have done it ... about 3 years ago.

Removing speed limiter is the easiest thing. Just need to put a jumper to ECU (not necessary to change to Euro spec).

If you want to bring ponies back there is more trouble and (surprise!) money required to be spent.
In brief:
1. You need to do simple air box mods. cut extra hole in it. Just look at your friend's VFR air box and make it look similar.
2. Change throttle body inlet funnels to Euro spec. 4 pcs. Total about 20-30 USD.
3. Change spark plugs to colder type.
4. If your VFR is older than 2004 you might need to modify speedo, otherwise it won't display speed (over 200km/h) correctly.
5. Change mufflers to aftermarket or Euro spec stock. If you have limited budget It also might be modified.

If you are still interested please let me know, I will provide all the details.

Just in case someone runs into the same problem, following is more detailed guide of how to derestrict Jap spec VFR VTEC:

All the information was taken from the following site:
http://zensan.jp/sub00.html
I used Google to translate it to English.

The method was tryed by myself and confirmed to be fully reliable.

1. Speedometer has to be modified in order to show speed above 200km/h. It is necessary for years 2002-2003 only.
Mine is 2004, so it was OK without this modification.
http://zensan.jp/sub00_1.html.

2. Cut out blanked hole in air box snorkel.

http://zensan.jp/sub00_2.html

3. Exchange intake funnels (located inside air box).

http://zensan.jp/sub00_3.html

Part numbers:
Front: 17236 - MCW-D00
Rear side: 17237 - MCW-D00
Two each

4. Modify ECU wiring as it is shown on pictures:
http://zensan.jp/sub00_4.html

This modification will remove speed limiter and also will change ignition and fuel maps.

5. Change existing spark plugs Denso VNH24Z to colder type VNH27Z.
...If you wish so.

http://zensan.jp/subb_1.html

6. Change Exhaust to full power stock or any aftermarket one.

It is also possible to modify existing one:

It has to be removed and all 4 outlet pipes (the ones you normally see outside) have to be replaced with bigger diameter ones.

There is one more restrictor inside muffler - return baffles are smaller diameter than normal. So it has to be removed and bigger one installed. However, if you happen to come to this point it is also possible to carry out a "full gut" or the easiest way is just to drill exhaust (I followed this option). This way you will bypass that return baffles. Both "drilling' and "gutting" have been nicely explained here by experts who can write a book on it.

Hope this information will help someone eventually.

Спасибо, мой друг

It worked like a charm. Real easy. I hit 214km/h, and then turned around and went home a happy man.

Thanks again for the help.

You are welcome
Всегда пожалуйста
:)

She should go 240-250km/h without any problems.

I also suggest you to install Power Commander, then you will be even happier.

Just like myself.
I installed it just a couple of months ago. Huge difference, my friend!

Only be carefull with map you choose, as VTEC cuts in at 6400RPM at jap spec VFR. You might want to tweek Cozie's map a little.
