Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for customizing the 'ole kR but come on. What a tool.

One of the main problems with putting a SSSA on an older VF is the rear down pipes will hit the swingarm. The pivot point passes right through the center of the pipes. Like so...

This issue forces a custom rear exhaust but this genius figured a way around it. He simply driiled a big hole into the frame... at a bend...near some bolt holes...next to a large existing hole...and took out most of the integrity that is left in an already quetionable frame!!!! Holy shite! That gives stupid a whole new name. Am I wrong here?

Damn, back to the drawing board.....

I'm looking at this same problem now but this particular 'solution' hadn't occurred to me... :comp13:

No stress there(!)

Will someone please inform this guy...at least so he doesn't kill himself on an R ?

Ya think that thread stopped because the guy who started it was found on the side of the road with alumnium up his arse?
#15
It also reminds me of the donkeys who grind the welds down on thier frames before they polish them.

oh snap.
#16
If you're gonna be dumb, you better be tough...
#17
As an aircraft structural engineer, I do not approve of his methods. I wager that frame snaps in half the first time he hits a pot hole or large bump in the road. That guy is a ruhtard!
#18
you ARE going to reinforce the area behind it right?? or weld in a slick looking 1/4 steel plate on the outside?

OMG - lets weld a steel bar across the wheel well, what is that a dirt clod shaver? Wheel compression limiter? Some projects though done by skilled tech, are NOT engineered properly!

Maybe the SSA guy is thinking of a new insitu swingarm exaust system - prewarms your tires for ya! HEH Jeez why didnt he just get a SSA exhaust to go with it? They make those ya know!
#23
Shame on all of you!

I ended up reading most of that thread, and that guys ban thread. Awesome.
#26
WOW - that guy makes my work look good! Always nice to see someone clean things up before they start a project (!) The worse part to me is that the left side hole cuts through the original pivot tube to boot!

Say what you will, but I'd ride the crap out of that thing...

:pinocchio:

I had to look at this project for a couple of days before I caught what was going on with moving the pivot point further back. Seems like a reasonable solution if it reinforced correctly.

I would weld a tube into the hole to hold the bolt. I would then weld a washer on. The original hole might be well reinforced similarly from the factory I would say that the project was basically unfinished when it was sold. Not everything has to be completely engineered to be successful and safe.
#33
Well let's assume he gets it welded in nice and strong and the pivot hole closed up and safe.

His new pivot is now further from ideal(ideal being directly in the center of the countershaft sprocket).
Chain slack will vary more with swingarm movement and he will need to adjust for this. He might also want to consider larger front and rear sprockets in an effort to minimize chain wear on the swingarm. Add in the lengthened wheelbase from
moving the swingarm to the rear. All in all, further from ideal.

I think he is introducing more problems than he is solving with what initially appears to be a "simple" solution.
He should commit to modifying the exhaust if he wants to use a solid pivot arm.

You make excellent points about what the modification does to chain tension. What threw me was I was trying to wrap my head around the fact that some how he was trying to run the exhaust through the hole. Once I figured it out I realized that the thing "could" be rebuilt so that the frame was not going to break off. I don't understand why anyone would go to the effort to convert to a single side arm.

I have never looked at a 1000 like the one in question. On the stock swingarm pivit, did honda cantilever stub bolts off the inside of the stock bolt holes, surly there is a second frame mount inside the swing arm tab.

The really awesome thing about Shervin, is that he has managed to become the most famous motorcycle mechanic in the WORLD.

Takes some serious ummm....talent... to become a legend in such a short time period. Talk to any motorcyclist passionate anywhere, and they are likely to be aware of the famous exploits of the Original Ninja Motorcycle Mechanic: Shervin

There are 2 stub pivots, one on either side. They go through the frame and into the swingarm either side. The swingarm itself does not go straight across like the SSSA in the pics, but there is the center section open for the exhaust to fit between the engine and swingarm.

Going to be interesting working out the exhaust, I'd really like to do a left side 4-1 on the F.

And if you or Kel have any suggestions let me know....

You guys all SUCK.

3 hours of my work day gone. And I'm way behind now. I learned all about Sherv, the Yut Ugh guy, and Mr. NOS Energy Drink. And there were even mentions of the Drill the ECU guy. Luckily I already knew about him, as that would have been another hour of reading, laughing, crying.
