Conclusion
- Actual item description - Zero Gravity Dark Smoke SR-Series Windscreen
- Easy simple mod really changes look of bike, makes it meaner
- Rather pricey for a simple piece of plasic if you ask me, but very nice quality and perfect fit
- Could not have taken more than 30-minutes, and I did some cleaning and waxing of hardware and fairing in that time
- Pay attention to your screws, or you will get screwed, the phillips head screws that go through the inner black plastic trim piece are shorter than the phillips head screws that are found under the rubber gasket under the rear view mirrors, I have a very minor crack in the paint (never saw it before) on one side because the previous owner or bike shop replaced the visor, put the longer screw in the shallower hole and cracked the paint
- The gauges are clearly in much less light, this is something I will need to get used to, for the most part not a problem, but for sure a huge change in some lighting conditions. This morning at 6:30 going to work for the 1st time with this on, the sun angle was low, and coming towards me, the tach was thinking it was dusk out even thought the sun was blasting into my eyes, the tach was at the inbetween color, not a white face with aqua numbers, and not at a full back face with white numbers, and it was a tad hard to see. As soon as I changed directions and the sun was coming in on more of an angle the tach flipped to a white face and it was much easier to read. Overall this is not a big deal, but it is something to know going into this mod.
- I really like the  way the gauge cluster looks when riding, it's a much darker kind of enclosed cockpit sort of look now.
  

  

  

  

Actually, this change is good for me, this visibility of the tach thing
I think it will give me the kick in the but to tear apart the gauge cluster
Not only is the bulb blown for the lowest speeds on the speedo, but I also have new gauge faces
I have always hated the white tach, Throttlepimp made me some custom faces and I have not gotten them on yet
This bolder, bigger look will be the perfect mod for the dark screen mod

Wasn't aware that the 5th Gen tach changes color, that's interesting.

The changing color thing baffled me at first!

Yea, neither was I at 1st
Imagine my surprise the 1st time I turned the key in the dark garage and both gauges were black and white
This is also why I wanted to change the gauge faces because to me, it looks best in the dark, ya know, the time when I never ride :)

Where did you order the SR from? I've been looking for one myself and was thinking of trying sporttour.com

Thanks for the link, I found a clear sport tour screen from ZG and an aftermarket clear DB for my 5th gen.  I've been looking for a clear screen for when I set up a camera.  That is the only thing I don't like about my ZG SR Dark screen I have now, it's too dark for me but it does great in the wind for my 6'2" height.  I didn't know it was the same size as the OE screen though.

I just bought a 2000 VFR a little over a week ago. It has a 'double bubble' screen on it. I love everything about the bike so far except the seat, and the wind noise, especially the wind noise. Before this bike I had a 06 BMW K1200R (now sold) with a very small screen but it still deflected a significant amount of wind and was extremely quiet.  I'm thinking the screen on the VFR is a bit taller than stock and is directing the wind at my helmet. The wind is bothersome and really limits the enjoyment of the bike even at speeds as low as 40 mph.  So, I just ordered a ZG Dark Smoke SR series screen which as you say is the same size as the stock one. I am hopeful this will help with the wind force and noise! I am wondering now if I should have ordered the Light Smoke one if the lighting on the gauges will be affected.

I ordered a Sargent seat too.

I bought my bike with 2 zero gravity screens. one stock style but blacked out and another touring one that has a heavy tint. I ride with the touring one right now and it does seem to deflect a bunch of wind towards my helmet. However after owning my Bandit 1200, I got used to the wind and noise that its low fairing created. It also helps that I dont ride with a cheap HJC or (insert other cheap helmet). Shoei helmets make a huge difference cutting the wind and I NEVER get head bobble etc unless Im riding 2-up with my gf and she puts her helmet slightly close to mine with a strong headwind. Perhaps I should try my stock size ZG windscreen to try and notice the difference...

ohh and I do ride with boots now, I was waiting for them to arrive from motorcycle superstore in this picture. sucks cause its a cool shot but those tennis shoes blow it... o well. Alpinestars jackets have crap zippers for such an expensive jacket. I had to take that one to a tailor and have them cut the zipper out and install a good metal one. Platic zippers, really alpinestars????

I use the RF-1100, and I wouldnt call it "quiet". When I ride with my stepdads Icon, its pretty quiet but very bulky. Try the stock one and see what happens. Id love to switch mine out to try for ya, but im kinda lazy about it :)

I have the ZG Double Bubble in dark smoke. I got a factory second off ebay and can't see any blemishes.  The best part is it doesn't have the cheesy ZG in white lettering on the sides.  Prob my favorite mod as it eliminated teh buffeting and also looks awesome.  HIGHLY RECOMMNED IT!!!!!

Another difference between stock and ZG shields is, the material on the ZG is thinner than what Honda uses, so consequently the CG sheild cracks and shatters more easily if hit by objects or even just leaned on (don't ask why I know).
I suspect they had to go thinner so they can easily shape the sheilds in a vaccuform machine. The OEM shield in contrast, seems to be cast rom a form (at least the one on my 4th gen seems to have been cast).
Otherwise the ZG shield seem to be of good quality. I had a Double Bubble and it provided pretty good wind protection and a much quieter ride.

My girl had a ZGDB on it when I bought it, and grew to hate it pretty quick. Lots of buffeting, and bugs entering my helmet despite the chin screen. I have since cut it down even with the bodywork as a summer screen, and use a stock screen during winter. I am hesitant to get a dark screen since I run an Adaptiv TPX behind the screen, and suspect the dark tint would decrease it's ability to detect laser beams.

For the record I'm 6'1", and wear a Shoei RF1000. The GF has a X-11, and an uncut ZGDB. She likes the screen, but then she's 5'5", and has Heli-Bars.

Would the "light-smoke" be maybe a better option? I was also looking at these screens but wondered if dark was trhe way to go (?). Thanks.

I purchased one of the DCDB ("dubious Chinese double-bubble" ) windscreens in dark smoke from Powersport Superstore last year for just $32.37 plus shipping. I experienced no problems w/quality or mounting issues and my DCDB is slightly taller and quieter than the stock screen that came on my '98.

However, I now wish I'd purchased a screen in light smoke, which as I recall was not an option for the relatively low-priced model I ended up with. Still, since you generally have little (if any) need to see through the screen while riding, the main disadvantage I've come to realize about a dark tint s the inability to take videos or photos through the screen with the camera facing forward.

Also, while I feel the dark screen looks better vs. clear, I also feel one with a lighter tint would look just a good.

So If you feel at some point you might want to be able to see through the screen, or might want to be able to shoot videos or photos w/the camera facing forward I wouldn't recommend the dark tint. Otherwise the decision probably makes little difference and could be based on personal preference.
