What did you own before your 6th Gen?

I'm curious what was your most recent motorcycle before buying a 6th gen VFR.

I'll have my first motorcycle in five day (2006 SV650s) but I think the VFR 800 are great on paper and looks. I just need to find one to test drive.

Mine was a 2000 Katana 750.. nice bike but the VFR's motor was soo much better!

FJR 1300 and i still have it.

I love the bike and hope to keep it for a very long time.

The vtec is a keeper too, need more room and money :laughing6-hehe:

1996 Ducati 900 SS/CR. I do not miss that bike at all - the Honda has more power, and I expect it will be much more reliable. I am done with exotics - had to own one to find out how much trouble they are.

1995 CB1000 and 2000 RC51. Got rid of both once I got the 6th Gen. I really loved them both, but the VFR simply replaced all attributes of both bikes.

How was learning on a VFR800?

I think I'd really like one but I want to get some miles under neath me on a SV650s before jumping in a VFR.

Started on an 05 600RR then got an 05 636 and added the VFR in addition to. Since sold off both the sport bikes and just have the VFR now

1st - '93 Ninja 250 - rode it until the engine blew - sold it for 400 less than I paid 3yrs earlier w/ the blown engine just to get rid of it.

2nd - '01 SV650S - liked the bike, hatred for carbs grew, love for sport touring began - would have made a great track bike as well

3rd - '04 VFR - loving the bike - 25K and counting

4th - considering an '05 Sprint...

A 3rd gen...a beautiful white '93. Before that, an '85 VF500.

My first bike was a Suzuki GS500F.

My second bike was a BMW F800S (the F800S/ST is one of the closest competitors to the VFR according to the magazine bike comparisons.). The VFR, for a variety of reasons, is a better bike for me.

And now, of course, the VFR that I am introducing to a lot more of Canada and the States. :laughing6-hehe:

My 96 4th gen that I like every bit as much as my 6th gen, if not better. Before that, I owned a Suzuki GS500 that helped me return to riding after a 12-year hiatus.

1982 Yamaha Seca XJ650RJC (red) Canadian version, I do miss the low maintenance shaft drive. One of the few vehicles I made money on.

It was great. It is not as easy to wheelie or break the rear loose as it is with my other bikes. The only downside is that it is much heavier. I actually liked the weight while learning as it taught me a lot about low speed handling. now when I get on my other bikes they feel weightless.

The VFR is also much easier on initial turn-in than my other bikes.

In camparing it to a SV650, I would guess that the power to weight ratio is comparable. (not sure about the exact specs - someone can correct me) you would be moving up to more power, but it is EASILY controllable. On the other side of the equation you would aldo be moving up greatly in bike weight. Ergonomically speaking the VFR feels more upright as well.

The bike before my VFR was a '95 GSXR 750. It was a dream bike of mine ever since I started riding (which happened to be the same year) that I finally bought low mileage at a steal from a friend. Then a year later, someone got it from me at a better steal, lifted it from the parking lot at my apartment in the fall of 08. Oddly enough, in Jan of this year the local PD called me and said they found my bike. Some guy got into a fight at a Waffle House and when they arrested him they ran the VIN on the bike in the back of his truck.......and it was mine. Ins had already paid out on it though, and I wasn't in a position to buy it back right now anyway. Oh well, to have loved and lost. They say never date or buy your dream cause it'll ruin it, well in this case they were wrong. Loved that bike.

Never had a minibike growing up, but all my friends did. I begged rides on my big brother's Yamaha XT125 and my friends's Honda Z50 and Honda CT70. Even the neighborhood kids had minibikes. When I was in fifth grade my neighbor and his sister got matching YZ80s, and at that time I questioned whether I really wanted to continue to go on living.

In College I needed transportation. My best friend's dad had an old CB350. He fixed it up and I bought it for a few hundred bucks. In the wintertime. He didn't tell me it had a choke and I didn't know enough to look for it. I woke the neighbors up every morning as I broke a sweat kick starting it cold. Tough lesson. Parked outside the campus housing office one day and what did I see? A pearl white VFR. I stared at it for the longest time. That, I decided, what the most beautiful bike I had ever seen. I would later have the same reaction when I saw my first Ducati PASO.

Enough kick starting. Within a year I sold my CB350 to the bass player in my band (I thought I got the better end of the deal but the bike is probably worth three times what he paid for it). I bought a big boy bike -- a sleek 1982 Yamaha Vision 550. V twin and futuristic styling. Electric start. Black. I loved that bike. Parked it on the street and always looked back at it when I walked up the stairs to my front porch. You'd have thought I had left a pretty girl sitting on it. It was the fanciest thing I had ever owned. One afternoon I heard a clatter outside. For some reason I thought the noise sounded like a baby buggy falling down stairs, and then I thought, "Wait a minute. There aren't any babies in this neighborhood...MY BIKE!" My neighbor had backed into it. Dented the tank. No more fancy. Took the insurance money and vowed I'd fix it. Spent the money and rode the wheels off the bike.

Top Gun had come out in 1986. Tom Cruise rode a Ninja. It seemed dangerous and extravagant. I wanted one but I was broke. My girlfriend, however, wasn't. She needed a car, so we struck a deal: buy me a bike and I'll let you use my truck. The deal was struck and for the next years rode it from Los Angeles to Santa Cruz California every other week to visit her. I rode it on roads with water up to my axles because I had to get to work. I road it in the freezing cold. Silver, with red and black stripes. Girl friend gone. Bike gone.

I was becoming practical: When I had accumulated enough money to by another bike, I bought another Katana: a 1993 model, blue with bronze wheels. Kept it for about some time.

At some point I looked around and it was 2003: I began reading everything I could about the VFR. I am not ashamed to say I paid almost full price for the first new bike I ever owned: my 2002 VFR Interceptor. Red. The bike is almost ten years old, but you really can't tell. I haven't reached its limits and I doubt I ever will.

So when everyone has chimed in, you're next question has to be: What is the next bike you'll own, and why?

As for my next one, it will probably be of the cruiser variety. I'd like to think I'd keep the VFR around, but I may have to look for a new place to live in doing so. Girlfriends just don't understand the multi-bike disease. If and when it ever happens, I know I'll miss the VFR. Still one of the best bikes I've ever ridden (and there's been a few, believe me!)

VFR was my first street bike. Big bite, but I managed it.

Since then, I had a ST1300, and now have a pair of GL1100's that I'm rebuilding. The VFR is still here and is my daily transport.

My first bike was actually a scooter, a 1988 Piaggio Vespa PX200 that my dad bought me in 1989. I still have it, and I'll never sell it. My first proper bike was a 1993 Kawasaki KLR600. After that it was a 1997 Kawasaki ZX-7R. God I loved that bike. It was red, with a purple tail and it made a wonderful sound. It wasn't that comfortable though. Next up was a 2000 Kawasaki ZX-6R (can you see a pattern developing here?) which I loved to bits as well. When I met my now-ex-wife, I decided to get something more comfortable and went for a 2002 Aprilia Futura. That was also a very good bike, I did a lot of long distance riding on that one but it felt a bit too grown up for me. It also had certain niggling faults (electrical system, coils etc) so I decided to get rid of it before it broke my heart.

I always loved the VFRs so when I found a lightly used dark blue one, I decided to go for it, but the owner and I disagreed on something at the last moment. Just a couple of days later, I found my current steed with just 2800 miles on it. I wanted a red one anyway. The VFR felt so good after the Futura, because it feels much more agile, the sound is infinitely better and it has that Honda quality. This bike has become the most modified bike I have ever owned. It has (a deep breath) a K&N filter, Rapidbike 3 Module, BOS slip-ons, HyperPro Shock (progressive spring, fully adjustable incl. high and low speed compression), Scottoiler, Zero Gravity double bubble screen, Titax clutch and brake levers (black) and most recently a HK Suspension modified fork with full adjustability (compression on the left, rebound on the right). I love this bike so much that I decided to go ahead and splash for a Supercharger from A&A Performance (aka the Torocharger). I'll also be changing the headers, brake lines (kevlar) and adding a carbon-fiber hugger as I install the SC. I don't think I'll ever sell my Viffer, I love it too much :biggrin:

89 Ninja 600... Buying the VFR was the best bike decision I made and wouldn't look back.

Same here. More or less, that was my first bike. I liked it a lot, but there came a time when I had to admit that it wasn't made to hold a 6'7" 300lb gorilla such as myself. Bone stock suspension combined with my weight and the SVs plentiful low-end torque made for a rocking-horse of a ride everytime I even thought about adjusting the throttle. The brakes sucked, too, and my butt would be killing me after a long ride, but I loved the way you could toss it about.

Next ride to join the VFR in the garage will be my brother's 03 SV1000 (technically already there, but not mine yet). It solves all the issues my 650 had (he's upgraded the suspension) and puts a smile on my face everytime I ride it. Can't wait.

Thanks for those notes. I have a SV650s with the bars raised somewhere around one inch (I think). The SV650 feels pretty light so far when it's moving and certainly not overlaoded with power but I haven't aggressively gunned the throttle yet. At some point, I will try to find a VFR800 to ride but I'm not sure if Honda dealers let you ride them.

my first bike was a 2000 Honda Shadow 750 ACE, which i rode for about 2 years before adding the VFR as my second bike. after being laid off I had to sell that shadow, but at least I could hold on to the VFR.

I had a VStrom 1000 and a Ducati ST3 before that.

Started riding in 2006. First bike was a 1989 Honda CBR, moved onto a 2007 Suzuki Bandit 1250 in early 2008.

The Bandit died in Sept 2008 when some lady ran a red light and flipped a U turn in front of me.

I just now finally bought a new bike one week ago today, a 2004 VFR. It's great to be riding again.

I think this VFR is going to be with me for awhile - at least I hope so.

My very most recent bike that I just sold (a couple of weeks ago actually), to buy my current VFR (06 with ABS in pearl white), was an 08 Ninja ZX6R (bought new). I must say, that the sound of the V4 engine is very addictive (hence why after only owning the bike a week or so, I've ordered a Leo Vince exhaust for her...LOL). I do track days with a ZX6R and have mainly owned sport bikes. I bought this one so I could "two up" with my wife and I like the idea of longer rides, so, with some hard luggage (I bought some already as well), that is now an option. I'm used to "scraping knees" on race ready track bikes, so, when trying out the VFR800 VTEC for the first time, I wasn't quite sure what to expect.......to say I was pleasantly surprised is putting it mildly! LOL. My only gripe so far (and its very minor), is the factory brakes, and not thier effectiveness, but, rather thier "feel". I'm used to radial MC's and mono block Nissin (and Brembo) 4 pot calipers...... you know, one finger on the lever and you're pratically standing on your front wheel. I love the "solid" brake lever feeling and I find so many bikes (street bikes anyway) have very "mushy" feeling brakes now.......... I know, its something I have to get used to, but, I miss that feeling on the street. So, I don't want to get rid of the factory ABS (or even the LBS setup), but, just try to get rid of the "sponginess" and longer lever travel (I bought this at a Honda dealer and they refreshed the brake fluid and new pads --- bike only has 10000miles), so, I know there is nothing wrong with the brakes. I will convert to braided lines, Ferrodo carbon race pads (I use these on my other bikes) and Pazzo levers..that should help anyway. Otherwise, this Viffer is pretty much goddamn perfect! In fact, I think a "higher power" himself made this bike...... simply exotic sounding, torquey, fun to ride (can scrape hard parts without issue and keep up to my 600 supersport buddies in the twisties) and very comfortable to boot! Heaven! My list of bikes I have owned and still own some are:

Yeah, I have thing for Kawi's (my blood used to flow green, but, believe it or not, only one of those bikes was the stereotypical "lime green" --since I hate lime green bikes on the street, LOL), and I'm an old f#*%ker (41yrs old, been riding over 23 years)who thinks he's still young and like to mess it up once and a while. I almost, I mean almost bought a "cruiser" this year (since so many of my co workers and friends have those "other" bikes -- you know, the ones that go "potato-potato-potato" out of thier huge twin pot engines....), but, I hated it and still need to have fun on the street too! I've been lurking on this board (and vfrworld as well) for a bit, and I simply love this community (much like I love the amateur road racing forums too). The knowledge I've gained in such a short amountof time is invaluable and even though this is my first Honda motorcycle, I feel very comfortable starting some mods on her and I think this will be a very good relationship! Quite simply, VFR's rock and so do you guys/gals! Thanks!

However - before owning the VFR, I did test pilot my University Buddies rides - RZ500, RZ350, Ninja 600, etc...... NO IDEA how I made it through those test pilot days - no gear other than a helmet.

Thank goodness my wife told me to get a hobby back in 2004 - cause thats why I bought the VFR. Way to go wifey!

75 Z-1, Very trick for its time, full Yoshimura stage III motor, smoothbores, hand bent Yoshimura 4-1 exhaust, Morris mag wheels, triple discs, S&W shocks and fork internals,Frame stiffening kit, Accel coils, H4 light, Built it while putting myself thru school as a motorcycle mechanic in the last half of the 70s. I would give a lot to get this bike back.

74 KX250, fun to ride but no suspension travel.

70 A-7 Avenger, expansion chambers, cafe bars, drum brakes, fast but no handling or stopping!

72 H-2, had 2 of these, great power but prone to high speed wobbles, Very nice looking bike. (16 and owned an H-2, it's a wonder I survived).

71 F7 175 enduro, Bassani pipe, really liked this bike, sold it to buy the F9, Thought bigger was better, mistake

72 S2 350 Triple, bought it salvage and fixed it, very fast but very little power below 6000 rpm, broke a rod on the way to trade it in on my first Z-1. Pulled off one plug wire and rode it on to the dealer.

71 G3TRA, my first bike with atube frame, ran the wheels off this one

67 Suzuki 80, pressed steel frame, fold down bars, bought it for $25 in 1972 with 1st gear out. Learned to work on motorcyles with this one. Rode it 6 months and sold it for $160.

I was a die hard Kawasaki fan in my youth and worked on bikes for all my friends. Worked at shops after high school and thru college. Developed my love for Hondas when the Interceptor first arrived in 83.

1991 Cbr1000f with custom gloss black paint with white diagonal stripes fitted with dual yoshi's. It was my first real bike and I had purchased it in february of 2010 in prestine condition, that is until I hit some black ice pulling out of my jobs parking lot and slid it on its side about 5 feet. Loved her very much, very easy to maintain and did all the maintenance myself including the last carb sync just before I sold her to a friend at 42xxx. I in just under a year's span I had put about 10,250 ≈ on her. Then I bought a italian red 2003 Vfr back in August 2010 from a guy who had lost his job with 19,000k miles on her for $3500 ( if I remember correctly, since I've also bought a car for my wife since then for around the same price). At the time the book for her was a about 5k. Since August until now I've put almost 12,000k miles on her and no problems and no valve check just preventive maintenance. The odometer now reads 31,250k. I have named her Zero because she is absolute.

I also still have the '82 Vision, but unfortunately she's been disassembled for ~21 years after the engine unexpectedly developed a knock (spun a rod bearing) after ~ 25k miles while I was commuting to work one morning in 1990. Like humpty-dumpty I don't know if "all the kings horses...", etc. could put her back back together again at this point. Perhaps I may attempt to "resurrect" her after I retire...assuming I haven't decided to sell or part her out before then. The Vision was my first street bike and was purchased after college and marriage at age 26. Picked her up brand-new as a leftover model in Oct. 1984 for $1.6k, or just a litlle more than 1/2 the original MSRP. What a deal!

My VFR800FI and ST1100 are just broken-in with just only 9.5k & 90k miles on each, respectively,

Most of these bikes were ridden everyday rain / hail / shine 365 days a year as I see cars as toys for hot rodding and bikes as transport and the true budget speed machines

I will not live where I cannot ride everyday of the year not going to happen ever , Bikes are for riding not polishing and looking at for months at a time

My old 1996 rrp fireblade still runs well and now has over 400,000km's on the clock and only uses 5-600mls of oil every 5000km's

The guy who bought it has put 3 stators and 2 reg/recs on it since he bought it from me at 186,000km's

After typing this I now know why I am always broke

A VFR will grow on you. There have been multiple cases of seller's remorse reported by former owners. An '06, either black or white, is a keeper!
