Found this one and I think its a no brainer but wanted to get some other thoughts? Says 88k for kms but with the rebuild it really doesn't matter. Clearly color scheme is not correct...regardless, $1500!

K&N filter accel coil packs and wires new fork seals brakes front and rear new tires new battery hindle custom four into one carbon fiber pipe. The paint is all new the motor was rebuilt just before I bought it and has great compression. it has been my project for the past two years but it has to go. The carbs were rebuilt an re jetted this August. Key was misplaced in the fall so there is no key as reflected in the price. I have over 2500 into the restoration alone. Price very firm don't waste my time with a lowball offer."
ya, I would like to hear it run before purchasing it for sure. Too much snow up here to check out second gear. Any suggestions on the hot wiring it? Dont really feel like pulling my ignition to do it.
Agreed. I was thinking maybe even stolen..obviously need ownership to purchase it but none the less needs to run before any money is transferred.
Really don't need another one, mine is in great shape, just tough to pass on a great deal:). Already in the midst of rebuilding a V65 Magna, was thinking this would be more of a buy hold and sell in the spring once the buying interest comes back. Tough one...
Not sure on title yet...have only confirmed via email he still has it (first come first serve and someone says they want it but has not shown up yet). I am trying to get a hold of him now to get some more answers from him. On his email response he says he's got over $3900 into it now.
Sounds like the guy is full of it. Check documents extra close before buying, maybe even run the VIN to see if it's been reported stolen. Otherwise, if the forks ain't locked and you can at least get the engine to spin, I say buy buy buy.
Call me chicken, but it sounds too good to be true. May be a scam -stolen. Like others said, take a very close look at the docs. But please do let us know if you end up buying it and if it runs nice or not...
Another thing to try, I know on my '80CX500 the ignition key quit working, but I was still able to push start it....just did not have any lights...So if you can push it it may start. You could verify with yours. I was stuck about 30 miles from home when mine went t.u. I then wired in a switch until I got another ignition when I picked up my other cx500's.
From what I see, I wouldn't call it a steal. Most people who want an R want it stock looking(one of the things most people love about this bike is the color scheme). If you do like the Rothman's scheme, this isn't a particularly good version of that. The striping is different from the lower to the tail section. The stripes do something strange at the tail lights. There's not much blue on the upper by the wind shield. All in all, I would call fail on the looks. First thing I'd do if it was mine would be paint it. He was told it was rebuilt before he bought it so who's to say that's legit. I'd hate to think there's an 88k km stock shock out back, yikes. The pipe is cool and there's a few good upgrades. A stocker with some minor issues can be had for $2500+ if you catch the right seller. I agree with others, if you're trying to sell your bike, drop $40 and get a key made. I would say it's a steal if it was stock, OK deal as is. You aren't going to make a ton on a flip IMO,
Ok, so I talked to the guy (yes Glenn this is the one in London). He sounds legit. He bought it 3 yrs ago from a firefighter in Toronto. Tank was all rusted and such. He said the guy bought it from the original owner who had it painted like the Rothmans style. BTW, he repaited it as the paint looked bad and was flaking off?? He bought it for $1500 and put over $2500 in to it (new tires, lined the tank, paint job worth $1500 alone, etc). He could not confirm its been rebuilt but his buddy who owns a mechanic shop said the way it looked it was rebuilt (the way it is numbered and such??). It has 140 compression in all cylinders, again he says it runs strong. Says the clutch is a bit mushy....??
The carbs that he got with it he tried rebuilding them and still did not work so he bought a set of VF1000F carbs and put on it which he said are working fine now. He had it out on the road this past summer (2011) and said ran strong but it is now missing on one of the front cylinders intermittently and suspects its the wires (bought new ones but has not put them on yet). He is in the process of moving and said in this process he has lost the key. He said he could get a guy to come out and rekey it but just wants it gone as he now needs to move.
There are 3 other guys interested in it too (as always) but no one has made it out there to look at it yet. I am just a bit too skeptical on this thing and will likely pass on it, besides, no more room in the garage anyway:). Not sure if you can post links in here but will try anyway in-case someone else is interested in it. Guys name is Tony. Again, he sounds legit, I just am not convinced to drop the cash to end up with a bike I need to start parting out. Really looks cool though even if its not the right paint scheme.
I bought this one without seeing it in person. Then after I bought it, I saw this post. Currently I have 2 other VF1000R's so this will be a nice addition to the collection. I will post later to let people know how it goes. I know it's not original, but I really liked the paint job and pipe
I am a little late here, but the Hindle would have made me buy it alone. You could part ot out if you had to and make your investment back, but lets face it - if you are buying a VFKR your doing it to own a peice of history. Congrats on the new addition!
The Rothmans paint looks OK, but if it were mine, I would have gone the extra mile to see that the striping and layout of the colours was a dead ringer for the bikes of the era.
If it runs alright, and you can get the intermittent spark thing cured, I think you did OK. Not the deal of the century, but OK.
I have 2 85's in stock trim. One looks rough (Fairings etc), but it has VFR800 modified shock, top end oil kit. Braided lines all round. Carbs redone. Goes like stink. The other one is the parts bike for that one. It is all original, runs rough, has low km's and the fairings are in good shape.
The Rothmans one is now sitting next to them, and needs a key. I have removed the helmet lock ready to take to the Locksmith
Congrats I was supposed to go look at this maybe add to the collection but never got there ,I hope everything works as planned and he seeemed to be very genuine with what the bike was . Great score as you have 2 others already .
Let me know if you want to sell the lower fairing and/or the seat cowl David off the rough one as I would be interested if it has the same paint scheme as mine.
The fairings would be the last items to be sold off. Sorry I started going on track days at Cayuga, so it is nice to have 2 sets of fairings just in case. That was the main reason for buying the second one. Bike is a bit heavy for track days but it flys down the straights
Ok thanks David for getting back to me. Mine is just a Sunday driver... no Cayuga for mine:). I accidentally laid it on its side so need some work done. Know anyone local that I could get to repair it? Also, my seat cowl needs some repairs too as it has some cracks.
Turned out great. Runs great. Everything the original owner said was true. Made a few positive changes, and it is now up for sale on the same site it was advertised on in the first place
