Good deal?

Any thoughts from the VFRD experts on paying $3,600 for a 2000 VFR w/ 12k miles, Corbin seat, Two Brothers pipe, throttle lock.

Did I mention she is yellow? :)

Offer him $3200 cash, bet he'll take it.

Have any pics? For me it would kind of depend on the history. Original owner, pristine with service records then maybe if you want it bad enough. OTOH, is a few hundred dollars worth passing it up? Looks like you've already made the purchase though so post some pics!

The previous owner traded it in on a new BMW S1000RR.  I contacted the Honda dealer that serviced it and they had service history back to 2005 including annual oil changes, new tires in late 2010 at around 11,000 miles.  Owner seems to be pretty particular.  The bike is out of town so I can't SEE it with my own two eyes but the dealer has sent me hi-res pics of all sides and I can't see anything (dents, scratches, etc).  Price is a little high but they are also asking $4,200 on it which I would never pay.  I offered $3,600 and am awaiting the deal or no deal.

That's what I paid for my 2000 with 11,000 miles on it. Had Corbin, carbon fiber two brothers, helibars and givi shield. Also had pilot power 2ct's with 1000 miles on them. I say he'll yes!

Since then ive added givi's with SW Motech racks, heated grips and a voltmeter and a new did chain.

My GF just bought one earlier this year. 13.5k miles on it. No Corbin seat, but D&D high mount, BLS lowering foot pegs, shop manual, 2 stock seats, and a few other things. She gave $2900 for it, but I had to do a thermostat and fork seals when she bought it.

Not a good deal if you have to pay tax on top of that.  There are plenty of good deals from private individuals if you keep looking.

The price I set on my 2000 VFR is 4000.00.
46K miles - Corbin - 2Bros Titanium Full System.

It may not be a good deal to some, but if someone walked up and ask if I would sell it, I would say 4K.
If they haggle, I would just walk away.

There are deals to be had.
There are also a lot of people down on their luck with the bad economy who just need the money to get by.
It is a shame that so many people are taking advantage of another rider who might be out of work and needing cash to get by and they have to deal with so many low ballers.

I was selling my C14, and you just can't imagine the offers I was getting.
With my personality, it was easy to tell them to F off.

While very clean examples of 5th-generation viffers seem to show up for sale even after 10+ years, clean, low-mileage examples have become considerably more rare.

Although I feel I may have paid a premium price for my '98 in February of last year, I haven't felt any "buyer's remorse" since  spending the extra $$ for such an almost pristine & excellently-maintained example.

In my case the seller/original owner advertised my '98 @ $5k with just 6.2k miles on the odometer, plus accessories including a (now discontinued & hard-to-find) TBR high-mount exhaust, Dow motorcycle cover, Yuasa battery tender, Honda service manual, tank bag, Vanson leather jacket, etc.

As it turned out I offered $4k and the seller accepted.

Since then I've added another 8k+ highly-enjoyable and relatively trouble-free miles to my viffer's odometer. If someone offered  $4k for her today I'm not sure I'd accept since I can think of v/few other motorcycles that may be available for similar $$ which I'd be as interested in owning as my 5th-generation.

I think $3,600 is a bit on the high side but the bike is what I've been looking for and I've been looking for a couple months.  This has low miles, its been maintained, a couple good farkles, and its the color I want.  Its also pretty much stock which is my main issue with finding a bike.  Most the bikes I've seen that are in a 500 mile distance have been repainted, needs repainted or needs work done to it.

As far as tax goes, I don't factor that into the cost of the bike but that is just me.

Like you I also looked for more than 6 months before my '98 came on the market locally. Since then I've seen a few other 5th-generations show up for sale around here, but I can't recall seeing another example with such low-mileage and in condition comparable to mine.

Keep in mind that if the machine you're considering was taken on trade by a dealer, it's unlikely they offered the seller much more for it than the listed KBB trade-in value. So I recommend you research and keep this value in mind during your negotiations w/the dealer. Also consider that since summer and the riding season is winding down, demand for motorcycles also s/b coming down. So  the dealer may be motivated to move existing inventory off his showroom floor before 2013 models start to arrive..

Also remember that Yellow is way faster than Red.

I think $3600 is fair for a relative low mile 5th gen. Say you bought a higher mileage bike with say 32K miles for $3k , you would probly throw $300- 400 at it in maintenace and your back to near where you are at with the low mile bike.

-  A caveat --- My habit when I shop for bikes, is that I look for the lowest mile bike I find at a reasonable price. The thought is, if I put a few thousand miles on it and decide I dont like it, I have a better chance of breaking even or mbe making a profit if I decide to sell the thing. This has worked very well for me over the years.

How long to you plan to keep the bike? If you pay $500 too much and plan to flip it in a year or two that might be a deal breaker. If you pay $500 too much and keep it 11 years and counting like I have, then it's just a couple of tire changes over a decade.

I plan to keep the bike for several years. I've had several bikes in the past 10 years including an 04 VFR but just haven't found a keeper. The 04 was great other than the VTEC. Just didn't like it.  

I've been combing Craigslist in just about every state and based on what I see most bikes that are older and with far more miles are priced at or even above what I'm going to pay. It seems that like was said earlier, low mileage, CLEAN units are getting harder to find.  Coupled with the loyal following and reputation prices just stay up.

The more I look the more I think this isn't the BEST deal I've ever got but it isn't a bad one.

KBB price on it is $2,080 for trade and $3,060 retail....If you want it and have the money I would say get it.

If its the bike you want, with low miles and in good condition, I guess you have to ask yourself how long you will hunt to find another one like it???

As Cap'n said, 500 or so dollars is a pittance, averaged over 10 years.

You'll have $500 worth of grins in that time, easy.

Motorcycles are seldom a rational purchase. It's a passion thing.

Also, pics look good plus the service history is there, so it seems it was loved by the P.O.

Just get on with it . Gee there will always be cheaper, lower miles,more etc.etc. after you get one. So what, you will be riding and not typing or thinking about it.

I find NADA far more accurate in car and bike prices.  I think Kelly is usually out in left field.


Back to the OP -- ave retail $3300 with bike in ave condition. Well 12k miles is better than average, there's your 300 bucks.

And it's got Corbin + TB. Putting those on a stocker would close ~1k retail?
