Just pushed my bike 3 miles cause it died!!! Dag!!! Im spent!!!

Does anyone have AAA? is it good for bikes?
I have GEICO insurance. I need to check what they have.
Need to check with GIECO about replacement value. KBB is only $2750.
Good luck finding a VFR for that!!!

Anyways ... pushed my bike 3 miles!!!
Was riding to my cousins shop to pick up centerstand parts from Honda.
Bike just died / quit. Pushed it into the service station right there. Lucky.
Through it on their charger. After 10 minutes it started.
Picked up parts. Started. Got halfway home started to stumble / lowering idle.
All the gauges died. Kept idle up to get it through intersection, then kaput .... Nothing!
As i pushed it home, it would have a little life for one crank, but that was it.

1. Already replaced battery. 2 months ago. Was having starting issues.
Ever since the new battery its started right up! Every time! without fail!

2. Already checked batteries before with meter and everything read fine.
Even did it at my buds house to double check my readings.

3. Already checked main grounds. Especially multiple/connector. The orange connector
with alot of grounds. On the gearshift side. Looks brand new.

SO ... What next????

1. Gunna go through manual for troubleshooting / list of stuff to check.
Gunna pull alot of plastic off (getting pretty good at it).
Double check all connections. See what the manual says about ...
A. R/R
B. Stator
C. Coils
D. Anything else

2. Could i have failed to properly plug something back in when i had plastic / tank off when i did valve inspection?

3. R/R looks like a Yammer R1, could that be a failure?

4. Hope its not the Stator. always hated messing with those on my jetski. Please tell me thats not it. Or its not hard to replace.

5. Gunna go thru the forums and check everyone elses woes / issues.

Still love my girl.
Just got centerstand. Getting GSXR mirrors. LED lights for looks and spots.
Starting new post bout these.
Gotta donate some cash, cuz this forum rocks!
Gunna look into hooking everyone up with GSXR / Darthbling mounts.

My mone's on staor and/or RR.

+1 and yeah you must be superman if you push a VFR 3 miles

As far as AAA you have to have R.V. on your AAA for it to cover motorcycle towiing.

Oooh really? Sounds like i need to call and see what it takes to get R.V. added to my membership.

I switched from State Farm to Rider Ins. Much better rates and roadside is included with all their policies. The only downfall to them is it isn't available in all states
#8
Before you go drastic and replace the stator, first check every connection in the charging system.

A prime suspect is the starter relay. Output from the rec/reg goes there before it gets to the battery. Resistive connections can overheat and fail leaving the battery. Remove the dust boot for a visual inspection. A multimeter is the best tool to check electrical connectivity.

I think as far as AAA goes you need "RVplus" to get motorcycle coverage.
#10
I feel bad for you cause I've been there. About 2 1/2 years ago, I pushed mine exactly 3 miles to my house (later measured it in my car out of curiousity). For anybody that hasn't pushed one, it's very hard to balance while being on one side of the bike and pushing it down the road. I was beat when I finally got home as I'm sure you were too. Hope you get her fixed soon.

Cool guys,
gives me some stuff to check.
Working on it tonight. After the Browns game :) though its just preseason...

Yep three miles. Dag!!!
But its Ohio, so its flat. The push home was about as straight and flat as they get.
I couldnt push it from the side though, felt like i was gunna drop it.
Sat on the bike. Walked it, then pushed with one leg, then switched off.
Dont want to repeat that again.

I'd guess stator or r/r too but be sure to check all the wiring and connections, especially if someone has spliced in a new r/r.

This was my '99 yesterday, fortunately I only had to push it about 100 feet to the garage. 3 miles would have killed me.

Was wondering if you were from Cleveland, OH, up til you mentioned the Browns. I've seen a couple different VFRs around here. A 5th gen and 6th gen park across from the new justice building every so often, and someone passed through on white and pink/red 6th gen with no side fairings and a matching leather onesie.

If you really need help, you can always hit me up. Not sure if I really have much time to spare though. Worse case I can loan you the R1 R/r hooked up to the 96 to see if that solves anything.

Another roadside joining alternative is joining AMA. I've haven't needed roadside assistance, yet. But I figure their towing network should be used to recovering bikes. That was my primary reason for joining.

When you're done with this 'adventure' please get yourself some kind of voltage meter or monitor. No use killing batteries and pushing bikes when you can have an early warning system.
#16
Geico also covers towing for bikes, although you might have to actively add to your policy. I think it's an extra $2 or $3 a year.

+1 for the AMA , IIRC it's $35 a year for membership W/road side service included. Also helps support motorcycle rights, like riding one-up in a suv lane(AMA)... allowed on the Jersy Turnpike(AMA).... Fair/consistant sound checks (on going AMA).... And keeps us up to date on what the gov' is doing to try and screw us.......... Like :

Federal officials mandate consumers must buy at least four gallons of gasoline from certain ethanol-blend pumps

Contact your senators and your representative today!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will require all consumers to buy at least four gallons of gasoline from certain gas pumps after the new E15 ethanol-gasoline blend is introduced into the market, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. The vast majority of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use today are not designed to operate on E15 fuel.
The EPA revealed the requirement to the AMA in a letter dated Aug. 1, responding to AMA concerns that E15 -- a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume – could be put in motorcycle and ATV fuel tanks inadvertently when consumers use blender pumps. A blender pump dispenses different fuel blends through the same hose. ...

Sorry to hear you had to push your MC ..... That sucks.........
#19
You can also keep your Geico Insurance and buy AAA road side service as a standalone for $75 per year. That covers I think up to 3 service calls per year. I have Geico for my bike and AAA road service and I've used it once for a jumpstart on the bike (left the key on)

Cool.
Gunna check with GEICO for roadside. 3 miles is bad enuff, but what if im 100 miles away? then id have to be superman ( and dumb too!)

YoshiNHS - ya thx. Would like to meet and ride with other VFR guys in the area.

RESULTS???

Started pulling off seat / tail.
2 bolts that hold plastic undertray had vibrated loose and were gone ( not tightened enough, no locticte )
This had cause it to bounce / vibrate. R/R was way loose.
Further inspection?
Connector to R/R was loose / not off but loose enough.
It started to burn.

Realistdreamer?
What do mean specifically about the monitor / meter?
Like a gauge ive had on my musclecars showing ouptut?
Great idea.
Where do think i should put that inline at?

So thanks guys for the input / help.
Gunna still voltmeter the starter / relay & R/R.
And double check everything else.
Then loctite / torque nuts/ bolts.
Hard lesson learned.

P.S - did everyone see my other post about center stand / GSX-R mirrors / LEDs???

Im gunna have my cuzs shop or my buds CNC up some brackets / Darthbling style for mounting the GSX-R mirrors.
Will make sure to have extra made. Payback for the help from VFRD.
Will make sure its reasonably priced. Whoever does the work is motivated to make em. Cool?
#21
Oh yeah ...

Is there any type of goop / epoxy type ( but not epoxy ) that i could fill in were the connectors are to avoid loosening?
Silicon type for electrical?
I guess i really dont need it, if everything is right & tight.
#22
Your connections should not vibrate loose. Of course if you used a Yamaha R/R (or someone else did) you should get the correct locking connectors for them. If you have the technical skills order the connectors from EasternBeaver.com. If you don't have the skills, or don't want to mess with it, order the R1 R/R adapter VFRness from www.wiremybike.com.
#23
all right.
all bolted back together.
time for test ride. closed loop around the block.
failure happenend within 10-15 minutes, so we will see.
but loose wire to R/R and the connector burnt???
Definitely like the gauge idea.
#24
im gunna pull the rear seat plastic back off and take a picture of the R/R.
That i can verify what it is.
Yeah i agree, there is no way connectors should or could vibrate loose.
And i didnt even think about till i was messing with it today.
Five wires going into R/R. 3 into one plug. 2 into other. Probably more as the one that started to burn was actually 2 wires.
Again didnt even think about it all the times i looked at it ... but the connectors are just the average electrical spade or whatever you call them.
They are not the correct ends that would lock with a tab onto the R/R.
Who know what they did to rig it back together, but defintely sloppy work.
I will take picture, post it, try to verify what it is, then get the right connectors if it is an R1 R/R.
#25
I have AAA, which incudes motorcycle and RV. Towing upto 100 miles. Haven't used it for the bike yet, but have for the cars and it pays for itself the first time you use it.
#26
I pushed my Ninja 250 3 miles to the next gas station outside of dallas in a downpour after I forgot I had put it on reserve 60 miles ago. With full luggage (tank, tail, saddle, backpack) and rain gear on, I can feel your pain.
#27
I have towing on my insurance...I think it cost me an additional $18 a year. I have used it once when the came chain came off and caused all sorts of havok. I have it on my cars as well...includes lock out service there. Only available with full coverage however.

3 wires into one side and 2 wires (or sometimes 4 wires grouped into 2 connectors) is normal for the R1 R/R, It could be the terminals came loose and caused arcing that killed the R/R...could also damaged the Stator possibly. You need to do full voltage tests...get a volt/ohm meter if you don't have one...even a cheap $8 version from Harbor Freight will do the trick.
#28
Be careful with Towing, some policies will only tow to a dealer, not your house!!!!!

I use to just carry $100 in my wallet, only had to tow the vfr once in 100,000 miles, the charge was $115, for a about a 15 mile trip

I have to admit , I aint pushing a vfr anywhere, 5 ft into my garage is enough

Some dielectric grease in the connector will help eliminate corrosion on the connectors which leads to more heat and resistance.

AAA is selling m/c insurance now, don't they include towing if your bike is insured with them or do you still need an additional RV policy 'rider'?
#30
My VFR ran great!
Was definitely that a connector.
Used LOCTITE epoxy putty to make a bridge/holding block to prevent slipping. i didnt just fill up the whole area, just a clamp/holding block to secure.
Still allows any heat ( if there is some ) to escape.

Fan doesnt seem to be turning on. 215 / 218 right?
Gunna check fuse. IVE GOT TO FIND MY MULTI-METER NOW!

My cuz gave me voltage gauge. Sweet!
Gotta check MFG installation guidelines inline the wiring harness.
Wire to the battery?
#31
not sure on 5th gen, but 6th gen fan comes on at 221 degrees
#32
Wire the volt meter straight to the battery. Easiest way.

Fan should come on around 220F
#33
I would run the gauge off a switched power source, meaning something that will shut off when the ignition switch is turned off, so the gauge wont put a drain on the battery while it isnt running. I have a fuse block that is relayed to one of those wires, and run the gauge off that.
#34
Bike is running great!

Just fleabayed:

GSXR Mirrors

929 Shock

Already got the parts
Centerstand tho???
cant really find any pictures/instructions in manual.
did some searches here and found some pixs. Mmmm
