Started working on the bike. Bought a new seat cowl from Honda with some nuts and bolts that need replacing. Ordered a Penske shock, EBC rear disc and made a slip on from the original pipe and Yoshimura muffler. It sounds great and the jetting seem to be ok. When I checked out the bike it looked like it has a jet kit and K&N filter. I'll be able to tell more when I get into that carbs. I also changed the bars I couldn't live with the stocks just to high and wrong angle for me. I used 86 GSXR750 bars that I had laying around. I also did the rear brake resevor delete.
I almost forgot I changed to a VFR800 rear rim which fixed the strange handling form the 180 tire on the 5.0 rim.

Nice to see another 4th gen in fantastic condition. The rear wheel should have had a 170 tire on it, not a 180.
Why would you want to delete the rear reservoir?
Wow, she looks very clean! I'm also curious about deleting the rear brake reservoir. What's the benefit?
Much nicer with the 800 rim. Is that a maverick I see poking its nose out?
Beautiful. I'm going the other way with my bars-I've got some 5th GENs that are just a bit higher than stock. I'm old.
started working? It looks done !
Why would you want to delete the rear reservoir?
Unless I am mistaken the rear reservoir delete is more of a reservoir mod in the sense that the reservoir container is replaced with a clear tube filled with enough fluid to act as a reservoir (I believe you can see it in the pic). HRC even sells these and they are used on race bikes. I could be wrong however...
The bike looks fantastic Thack! Good work on the exhaust. What's the EBC rear disc like? I was cleaning my stocker today and man is it ever heavy...
Looks very nice!
W/o the heatshield, the newly coated headers show up nicely.
Mine are a deep brown, so the shield stays on...
I has been down on it's right side, so did you replace/repaint the panels?
I also thought of removing my heat shield above the right peg some years ago, but opted not to do so when I remembered how I once cooked my right ankle pretty badly riding in traffic one hot summer day. I also think the heat will not be good for the rear brake master cylinder which the shield was also designed to protect, being so close to those pipes from the rear cylinders.

Thanks guys, I love working on this bike and can't wait to get more parts on. It has been dropped on both sides, I have fiber glassed the left side so it won't fall apart. Once I decide on a color (more than likely red) I will start the painting process. I stated above the reservoir (thanks for spelling that for me) delete just removes the reservoir and replaces it with a tube. No real value on this bike, on the Hawk it cleaned up the tail and racers do it for weight savings.
Yes that is a 71 Maverick that I have been lucky enough to have featured in Car Craft

That's awesome! An old friend had a 2 tone blue purple '72 with a mild 306 & c4 reverse shifter. That bike is in good hands ;)
Got some more presents yesterday, 49 state cams, CDI and GSXR750 USD forks........can't wait to strip her clothes off and get to work.
You're doing a CDI conversion?
Umm I don't think so, is it not called a CDI box? I'm talking about the ignition control box. I figured I would switch the cams , carbs and ingnition box to the 49 state version. On the other forum some one got good results from this change.

I think it's called the ECU.
Got some more parts yesterday and started sripping it down. 520 conversion stock ratio and today I will get the Penske shock. I removed the rear PAR tubes, making some cover plates for them. Trying to decide if I should remove the engine and clean it up or just clean it the best I can in the frame.

It's looking less and less like a bike. I did discover that it has a shift kit, so it's good I didn't buy one. The bearing are wore out on the rear axle so I ordered up some new ones. I also installed nice PAR block off plates, can't wait to get it back together. [image: 2qkqpt4.jpg]
Started the fork swap, looks like I'm putting the VFR stem in the GSXR lower triple. Then Machine up a new upper triple to except superbike bar clamps. I'll have pictures soon.
Here is the details of the stem swap. Ground of the weld of the VFR triple/stem and pressed out the stem. Pressed out the GSXR stem, welded around the bottom of the VFR stem. Machined for a .0015 press fit and knurled the area below the bearing so it would press into the GSXR lower. Press it in and pressed on the bearing now it's ready to install. Got the front end mocked up looks like it's going to be easy to mount up the wheel.

I now have the swing arm back on with the new Penske shock. I think this bike has lost 10lbs from cleaning chain lube. Kind of funny thing, as I was cleaning the swing arm I found a dime in the rear acentric. It was in between the acentric and swing arm in some grease. I figure maybe some kids put it in the holes next to the shock and it made it's way back there. I also put on the 520 front sprocket and noticed the one I took off was a 15 tooth. That kind of sucks because I bought stock gearing and I liked the way it accelerated.

Wow! Good work. Keep up with the pics.
Would you be able to take a picture of the back of the 5th gen wheel pls?
I know it requires modding to fit the 4th gen so I'm curious at the work that is required. The 5th gen wheel is sooo much nicer.
You have to notch the wheel hub to clear the rotor mount bolts. I got the information for this swap from this site, so they get the credit. I tried very hard to keep all the notches the same size not to mess up the wheel balance.

That close to center it shouldn't make any difference. Nice work. Whose brake lines did you go with?

It's a Russel 38" 10mm bango, AN 3 and a straight AN 3/10mm bango fitting from summit racing. The bike had a braided line on the rear but it was to short to run through the swing arm. 38" is a little long but it gives me more routing options.

Nice and here's the Car Craft link for that sweet Maverick.

Thanks for that picture of the wheel Thack. :cheerleader:
Got the upper triple made today it still needs some finish work. I also made the wheel spacers so the wheel is finished up. Now I need to figure out how to mill off 7mm from the caliper mounts.

It lives!!!!!! Started the bike up and synced the carbs no strange noises. However the alternator connector started smoking, thank God it happened in the garage. I have the r1 kit to install so I guess it's going in now. Should be able to ride it this week, I can't wait!!

Got the new regulator wired up and it reads 13.8-14 volts at an idle I also changed batteries to 08 CBR1000rr, nice and little. I'm hopping I make my round one weight loss goal of 20 lbs. But it will probably be more like 10-15 lbs. The big saver was the muffler and battery the rest are little bits and pieces. I can't wait to make my own header basiclly going to copy Two Brothers design which should also save some weight.
Latest photo....sooo close, had a crack in the upper fairing that needed to be glassed. Also moved the oil cooler it looked like the forks were going to hit it.

Took a little ride and it feels great, can't wait to ride it tomorrow.

that is one sexy front end............
WOW! what a difference, it handles soooooo much better and I still haven't set the sag. I do think I'm going to drop the front a little maybe 10mm. I filled it up and weighed it here at work.......500 lbs drop of roughly 20 lbs.
Awesome!! I'm very glad to hear it's working so well for you
It looks excellent!
Painted the front fender with a late model ford red....kind of close. I also replaced the fuel filter and dropped the forks .6875. Didn't really notice anything on the ride to work still feels great and planted.

After the first ride I had to put back on the rear rotor the bike came with. The EBC I got off e-bay was warped to shit. And the one that came off the bike didn't come from a VFR. Not sure what it's from but the holes are arced the wrong direction. Maybe a CBR rotor? I checked twice to make sure I had it on the right way, countersinks toward the left side. I looked at some used ones on e-bay and this one also has less holes.
