Ecu Re-Flash - All 4 Threads Merged

I still have not seen a single person on this VFR 1200 forum or the VFR club forum that has suscessfully recieved a re-flashed ECU from ecuunleashed. I have contacted Don Guhl of Guhl performance and he has responded with a request for more information. We will see if Guhl Performance wants to take on this on as a project.  I have worked with Guhl before and he is a very reputable high performance company that provides ECU re-flashes for other Honda models as well as Kawasaki & Suzucki sport bikes. Don Guhl did the ECU re-flash on my 2014 ZX14R. Don did a hell of a job on the ZX14. In combination with some Brock Davidson Performance parts and tuning by Brock the ZX14 makes over 215 RWHP.

I am asking Guhl to remove all the power restrictions, remove the top speed limit and raise the RPM limit 400 RPM's. I am not interested in fuel re-mapping in the ECU software. There are too many parts variations (exhaust systems, air filters, ect.) to cover with one ECU fuel map. Fuel mapping is better handled with a PC5 or Bazzaz system that can be custom mapped for each bike.

I will post any progress with Guhl Performance.

Awesome! But one question: Why raise the rev limiter? The rev limiter seems really easy to hit... Why potentially damage your engine by raising that factory level?

I was one of the original posters that was trying to get a group buy together but had no luck, however there is a ECU Unleashed dealer near me and when the financial adviser (wife) gives me the clearance it will get done. From what I'm told is, there are a few in Europe that have had them done but none here in the States...

This is just a first step.  Until I get the information to Don Guhl he requested and he has time to evaluate it it just remains a possability. Frankly I hope to get Brock Davidson involved it this as well. There is no high performance aftermarket company in the United States I am aware of that is involved with any series VFR and especially the VFR 1200. No performance shop I have found is doing any development outside of one shop in Germany.  DJ, Bazzaz, K&N and 5 or 6 slip on manufacturers all make seperate bolt on parts but there is nobody like Yoshamura, Muzzy or Brock Davidson with any coordinated parts development program.   My relationship with Brock through his using my 2012 ZX14R as a development bike for his companys high performance parts is the reason I was able to get Don Guhl to request further information for evaluation. Who knows if it will work out but it doesn't hurt to try and develop some interest from those companys that can really deliver. Depends on whether they see any potential market.

#8

If Brock were to develop a reflash, I'd be interested as he's essentially in my back yard.  In fact, I met him at the local drag strip (Kil-Kare) when he was just a guy tuning Suzukis back in the '90s.  Now he's got a big shop in what used to be an Ohio E-check facility, just about five minutes from my work...ten minutes from house.  Keep us posted John.

#9

Will do Dave. It's probably a long shot with Brock, he generally sticks to developing parts for bikes that have a significant market potential. Most of his customers are either drag racers or guys with Japanese sport bikes interested in getting better street performance. He surprised me two years ago though when he took an interest in the new model V Max and developed some performance parts for it. The V Max is another overpriced niche bike like the VFR 1200 in the United States. I think Yamaha probably sold even fewer V Max's than Honda has sold VFR 1200's here.

I'm honestly just waiting on work.  Trying to line up work for 2014 at the moment.  I'm a week to 2 weeks from finally being able to send mine in. I've thought about it  at length to see if I could live with my dash showing 3rd gear in 1-3 and I just like the indicator too much.  Once in a while it'll save me entering a corner as I'm going in too hot.  And that once in a while is worth retaining the functionality.

#11

Ok guys I have sent the information Don Guhl requested today. I provided him the Honda ECU part numbers for the US 2012 & 2013 VFR 1200F models (38770-MGE-C32) and for the US 2010 & 2011 1200F models (38770-MGE-773). I don't know if these part numbers are different for the European models but I suspect they are different. I also copied this information to Brock Davidson. When Don responds I will post his reply.

#12

I'd volunteer to be Brock's test mule if he showed any interest in the 12.  I'm literally just minutes from his shop.  And I have to admit, it would be nice if my gear position indicator read correctly.

#13

I have some progress to report but we are not there yet. I shipped my 2013 1200F model ECU (pt. # 38770-MGE-C32) to Don Guhl along with my factory service manual Tuesday this week. The first step was whether Don and his software engineers could read the code in the Honda ECU. He was able to read the code. Don's company has worked with re-flashing Honda ECU's before for both sport & dirt bikes as well as the other Japanese Mfgs. The challenge is that Honda has upgraded the processor chip in my 2013 ECU and we assume the 2012 ECU since it has the same part number. Don does not want to go any further until he can get his hands on a ECU from a 2010 or 2011 VFR 1200F (PT. # 38770-MGE-773) to see if Honda used the older processor chip before the 2012 model and what was changed other than the addition of traction control in 2012.

What we need is a volunteer to send Don their ECU (PT. # 38770-MGE-773) from a 2010 or 2011 VFR 1200F. Preferably someone who in the Pennsylvania area so he can read the code and compare it to the newer ECU. Guhl Motors is located at 4126 Oregon Pike, Ephrata PA 17522. At this point he does not want a ECU from a DCT model. He wants to work out re-flashes for the standard models first.

This is a serious guy. I shipped my ECU Tues. next day delivery and he called me back at 7 PM Wed. night to tell me about progress and to ask me to reach out to the VFR community and see if we could find someone (preferably in his area)  who would lend him a 2010 or 2011 ECU (PT. # 38770-MGE-773).

If you are willing to help take the next step please send Don a e-mail  "Don Guhl" <sales@guhlmotors.com>

I will wait for someone in the North East to offer first. I'm in TX
#15

I'm in the same boat as luvtoleanit... I'd offer up my ECU in a heartbeat, but I'm not that comfortable with the whole removing of plastics/tank yet...

#16

Links? Pictures or it didn't happen.

Carmo electronics has done a few veefalos, they offer several options for the reflash. VFRD member VFRFlanders has recently received a refelashed PGM-Fi, I am sure he'll report when he has it installed & tested, keep an eye on his topic about the reflash: http://www.vfrdiscus...sh-is-possible/

Me too, if no one offers up by Monday. I will pull mine out and send it to him. It's a 10 min job. John, let me know.

VFRFlanders was the guy that I was waiting on for his report for the re-flash... :cheerleader:

10 minutes huh, it took me 12 minutes.  :cheerleader:   It's no big deal guys but you won't get it out in 10 minutes if you are doing it for the first time. If you are doing it the first time it helps to have a service manual. The manual says you have to remove the mid fairings but you don't. just remove the seat & then the tank plastic covers and the push pin connectors in the mid fairings at the front of the tank. Pull the fairings back away from the tank at the front of the tank (don't remove them). Pull the two allen fasteners for the front of the tank and swivel the front of the tank up. Prop the front of the tank up with a piece of 2 X 4 (18 to 20 inches long). The ECU sits directly in front of the air box and behind the steering head between the frame and the air box. Disconnect the wire connector for the temp sensor on the front of the air box that sits above the ECU.  Pull the ECU up out of it's mount and disconnect the Three wiring connectors and you have the ECU out.

Yep, have done it four or five times now, put on the Honda OEM heated grips then removed the PAIR system, then put on a permanent power supply for my GPS... Can't remember why I took them off the other two times... Probably just to have a poke around...

At this moment two VFR's 1200 are reflashed in Holland.
One has been done (on his way with the post).
One with standard configuration (no modifications to the motorcycle) and one with modifications (Dam exhaust ect.)
Drivers report hopefully next week.

Once tested, dynorun is planned.

Any chance that we could get the two owners to post up the results for us? :cheerleader:

Still waiting to see anyone post impressions or hard data either in the US or overseas that has had a VFR 1200F  ECU re flash from ecuunleashed.  Anyone from Australia where this company is from had a re flash on your VFR 12???

#23

Today I had my first ride with my re-flashed VFR1200F. Next week a second owner will have his ECU back. A dynorun is planned as well.

Once we have the dyno and a "second opinion" from the other owner, I'll give you feed back.

Good News... Initial impression is good

VFRFlanders was the guy that I was waiting on for his report for the re-flash... :cheerleader:

contact Don Guhl directly through the e mail address I provided. Don't know if he has had any other offers for furnishing a 2010/2011 ECU. I would personally rather use a US company like Guhl rather than send it overseas. Lot fewer problems dealing with a company here if there is a problem. If I was in Europe I would want to have the re-flash done by a European company like VFRFlanders is using.

The company who did my reflash also has an office in the USA.

http://www.carmousa.com/

When you go to this US website Carmo only lists two Honda models (2006 thru 2011 CBR 600 & 1000). All re-flashes are referred to ecuunleashed tuning sights in the US. I have already been down that road over here. First I was referred by e mail from ecuunleashed to a ecuunleashed dealer in Texas who told me they did not do re-flashes for the VFR 1200. I was then referred by ecuunleashed to a dealer nearer me on the east coast of the US. When I called the this dealer I was told they had never heard of ecuunleashed. I sent a follow up e mail to ecuunleashed asking for clarification and didn't get an answer.

That's when I contacted Guhl Automotive. Don Guhl has my 2013 ECU in his shop and is evaluating a re flash service for the VFR 12. I have direct experience with this company through a re-flashed ECU on my 2012 ZX-14R. I don't know if Guhl will decide to offer this service or not right now but unlike my personal experience with ecu unleashed Don Guhl  responded personally to my request to take a look at the VFR 1200 ECU. At Don's request I sent the ECU to Don next day priority by fed ex and Don called me back at home the same day to say he had received it and had started evaluation of my ECU. He has e mailed me once since then to report they had been able to read the ECU code.

Ok, fella's My ECU is out and in the (FedEx) truck headed to Pennsylvania. Had a nice long chat with Don Guhl this morning... Very Knowledgeable guy and very personable. He has John's ECU and he has been able to break the Honda code, when he gets mine he will further investigate all that needs to be done. I have a friend that has a DCT version that is willing to send his in to Don as well, awaiting our results. Don is very optimistic that he can remove the restrictions from the DCT also... :cheerleader:  So, I will keep you all posted and i'm sure that John will do the same. I did assure Don, that there is plenty of interest in this, if he is able to remove the issues that we are facing. He also said that he has a 2006 VFR 800 ECU that he has broken the code too. So is any of you 800 guy's need some ECU flasing, he would be willing to look into that as well.

Also, does any one have some good Power Commander Maps that you can send to Don? He said that he could input them into the ECU also. If anyone has a good one with the DAM exhaust, that would be awesome

#31

Are there any guides on how to Mount/dismount the ECU? Preferably With Pictures. I can't seem to find anything. I might just be blind though...

#32

It's quite simple, you need to lift the tank, then it's directly above the airbox.

You will find a black module there, approx 15x7x2cm in size with 3 big connectors at the bottom, the module itself is placed vertical and it attached with a clip to the airbox.

That is the ECU.

It looks like this:

Optimus Prime I guess

lol, Now I am going to say that in my head everytime I see it.

Thx. So, how do I lift the tank? ;)
#35

Thx. So, how do I lift the tank? ;)

Remove the front V piece just below the radiator.

Remove each side (middle) cowl.

Remove the tank side covers.

Undo tank mount bolts at the front.

Lift tank on its rear hinges and support.

All the above is well covered in the Workshop manual and quite easy once you've done it a few times.

Worth noting that on some bikes the ECU/ECM is contained in a steel bracket attached with security screws. This is likely to be for those that have HISS and is designed to prevent easy removal of the ECU. I found the screws were not tight and having removed the bracket will not be replacing it as it just gets in the way.

Certainly in the UK Honda were basically forced to use these steel brackets due to the insurance industries approval scheme (assisted by third party alarm manufacturers as well in fact).

#36

@mariedman, get your ecu flashed by don... go to ride your bike... your smile is goin to be so big you cant say "optimus prime" anymore...maybe even cant think 'bout it :-) you with your 1200bike driving like a 125 :-)   haha lol, not mean to be rude dude...just saying...dont laugh with my english or i d like to hear you dutch :-)

be verry clear, not want to be rude :-)

#37

this thread really needs contact info and a walkthrough. seems a lot of questions keep being repeated.

#38

i think there is not much to be said... as i see it:

only one can do the trick: don gugl

Price 375$+shipping.

ECU only need to be at guhl 1day!!

you get:

remove speed limit

remove all restrictions by throttle(delay and not opening 100ù)

remap fuel and igition

optional:

lower fan temp

raise rev lim

all this without cutting or breaking ECUbox.

more than worth its money!  think of what you expect, than do this x2...

and most importent off  all, your bike will get a smoothness never seen!

cheers to guhl team!

+1, Don did deliver far more then I ever expecteded.

The man is god on bike tuning, don't think you can do better as you can't

Fasty - your English is fine! It's better than most Americans, that's for sure. Seriously though, I had to ask what OP meant a long time ago too. But Optimus Prime is so much better than Original Post(er). I can go back and read the first post in Optimus' voice.

As for my Dutch... well I took German in high school 20 years ago. I'll just leave it at that.

I most likely will do the Don ECU flash, but it will be after I have several more thousands of miles. Even the way it is right now is such a huge increase in power from my 6th gen 800. I'll wait until I have acclimated to the bike fully. That way, it will be like a new bike all over again!

Dude we call your OP not OP, but TS.

This means Topic Starter

As for Don, Don = GOD for VFR1200 bikers!! :cheerleader:

I have an VFR800 too, 5th gen version, the default VFR1200F is crap compared to my 800.....new 800's are probably crap too.

After Don has done your ECU you need to enforce your arms to stay on the bike accelerating....it will surpass a CBR1000RR (original) from 100 to 200 KM/H with ease.

Not joking here.

After an Don-flash the bike will be not 100% but 1000% better....try and see for yourself how good Don is....as he's GOD

I suppose because the bikes in Belgium were so heavily restricted the difference after the re-flash would seem like 1000% better, but for the average 1200 owner the Gulh re-flash  is pretty much only noticeable when accelerating hard in 1st and 2nd. Other than that it's just as it was before.

Don is not a "God", just a guy who knows how ECUs work and is a good engine tuner.

The Belgium tax on registering a new motorvehicle (BIV) takes Kw or BHP into consideration.

An approximation for the VFR1200:

Buying the 116HP/85Kw VFR1200 will cost you Euro 123

Buying the "normal" 173BHP/127Kw Euro 2,478

Ok the euro took a dive versus the dollar in recent times (from 1,40 to 1,26) but that is still serious money.

If I were to become a tax dodger, I would be careful with divulging too much details (like the type/color of my bike and where I live).

European ECU's are severly screwed. Don't know about bikes in the USA, but over here they are rubbish.

Lot of owners already sold their VFR1200F because it's so bad.

One of the things is the throtte delay, it made me almost crash because I was expecting power but it didn't came, so opening a bit more and suddenly too much power.

When you are in the mountains, or on a roundabout, this is a serious flaw and can lead to crashes like it almost did for me.

This change alone is making the bike handle so much better.

If you read the reviews of journalists here, you will see they all mention this problem.

I have been searching for UK companies that re-flash ECU's and was told about http://bsd.uk.com/tu...-reprogramming/.

I contacted them today and asked about re-flash for my 2010 VFR1200 DCT. Was told that 'They & NO other company in the UK' can re-flash ANY Honda ECU's :sad2:

So it's a PC5, Autotune, K&N air filter, Scorpian end can & Decat for me to get my 2010 VFR1200 dct performing how it should do. Why oh Why did Honda program the ECU with restrictions that make the bike run so poorly?

As far as I know only Don Guhl is able to flash them.

And a lot of us used Don's services including me.

Good luck with them, I have seen a Dutch reflasher that killed 2 ECU's already.

Talk to Don, he will fix your ECU the way Honda should have programmed it, but Honda can't do that because of EU- and CO2-maffia regulations.

#49
If you read the whole tread it woul be a no asked question... are there any revieuws on their work?? Mine also don by done verry pleased
#50

Question, can Don add traction control with his re-flash (vfr1200 2010)

This question is banging my head as well. Deactivation will not work for sure since you need few extra wires for the ecu.

But since the TC is only an extra program in ECU this should just work fine.

#51

Question, can Don add traction control with his re-flash (vfr1200 2010)

As far as I'm aware, he doesn't touch that part.

Give him a call and ask him.

#52

hi,

I am purchasing a '10 VFR12F. (right now I'm in Sri Lanka and get home end of next week when I'll get the bike)

I've made arrangements with Don to have my CPU re-flashed, which really makes me very excited about this purchase!

One question as I am ignorant about this bike, and it may sound dumb, but best to ask:

The CPU; where is it and what does it look like?

#53

The manual calls it ECM or PCM depending on manual or DCT. Most call it ECU.

The black box as others may call it, is located under the fuel tank, in front of the air cleaner box, just behind the steering head.

It seems as though, the fairing lower, fairing sides, tank side panels, need to be removed, to tilt the tank to access the ECU.

#54

hi Suzukijo,

Thanks, great directions.

#55

Hey GastonBandit, it looks like you aren't very far from me. If you need any help with your bike, shoot me a PM and Bring your bike over and I can help you with removal of the fairings and removal of the ECU.

#56

the fairing is easy once you have done it once or twice, i'd take him up on the offer of showing you the first time, or watch the you tube vid

i have seen the ECU but have not yet tried to remove it....does it have those typical Honda clips that like to break when you try to disconnect them ???

There you go.  You'd be wise to take this man up on his very generous offer.

youtube video, for fairing removal was helpful, it was  slow to watch.

Don called me and did my ECU today, should have it back soon,

I'll post up my feelings once I get it running, and have some time on the bike.

like all of you, I am anxious to see how it works. (rubbing hands gleefully, while giggling)

About the fairing clips. The small round fasteners, need to have the middle pushed in, about 1/16", this unsnaps them.

they can be easily pulled out, simply tugging on the plastic cover the small black plastic head will be easily grabbed then.

Having the manual, to know when something pushes in, hooks forward, or is simply a hook around a corner, makes it super easy.

The one plastic fastener, is the one that installs upward, just above the air vents where your knees fit. This one has the head showing, and needs to be pulled outward, 1/16", to unlock.

There are a few places, where the covers are push in, so need to be pulled outward, to allow removal of the covers.

(I put a small dab of white grease on installation for easy removal next time)

The small round fasteners, only need the middle pulled out a small amount, and after put back in place, the middle pin is pushed flat to secure them back.

I have had all of mine off a few times now, and none have broken.

Let me tell you this, Don will match your expectation with a factor 10.

Your bike will run in such a good way that you wished you let Don fiddle with it from the start.

Mine has been done, and others too, all of us so excited that we can't wait to hear what your first impression is.

I hope your first run is as good as mine, and I keep on smiling every time I start the engine
