About two weeks ago I found the paint of the right hand heat shield was coming off after a thorough rinse.
My bike is from October 2014, I rarely wash it and I drive through the wet winters and salty roads, but still.
I ordered a new part and will replace it tomorrow (with my friends from the Dutch VFR Owners Club).
But not before I had it coated with an extra three layers of protective paint.
The old one will be refurbished just in case I might need it in the future.
Did anyone else notice this issue or am I the only one?

That part looked terrible! I hope mine doesn't turn out like that! Was it covered under any warranty?
Could someone have spilt brake fluid on it as the reservoir is right there?
I have no warranty left. The bike is 2 and a half years old.
I also doubt that fluid was spilled. The mechanic had this shield covered during the filling of this brake system:

I've seen it on other models as well, but I guess it might be a little worse on this model?
Weirdly I was going to start a topic about this very same thing! The paint has started flaking on mine as well, just along the exposed edge at the back (so not as bad as your one).
I guess it's just in a really exposed place, sat in the spray of the rear wheel.
Mine needed refurbishing after 13 years, I base coated it with etch primer and then a top coat of bar-b-q paint, unfortunately it was silver paint. I then used the correct shade of matt black. Between each coat I gave it a good blast from a heat gun to cure it.
I powder coated mine after media blasting it, though the paint was solid on mine it was extremely faded, what would you expect though from a 10yr old bike with 4000 miles on it.
my 02 viffer had paint chips out of it though, not as bad as yours but it never got rode in harsh conditions like you talk about. no salt no winter driving. only came out in good seasons. it got rode a lot in the rain but not winter crap.
Going to check mine but haven't noticed it when cleaning etc.
This heat shield on my 03 22k miler 6th gen had rotted when I got it. Luckily I found a replacement on Ebay that wasn't too bad and repainted it with Barbecue paint.

All the black painted bolts and hydraulic parts have started to go a bit white and furry, anyone got a remedy for that?
I replaced my 5th gen one with a nice carbon one, you may be able to find one for the 6th & 8th gens too 😀
My '02 is flaking and rusting in a couple of spots.... i touched it with rust killer mid season but will be pulling and painting before this season starts

BTW don't use Hammerite, it contains silicon and has to be solvent washed then blasted off
I removed mine today. Figured I'd give it a try and see what I thought. Has anyone else tried that? It's a pretty simple part. If it sucks I may lay a replacement up in CF.

All my black bolts have been replaced with stainless, only solution. The brake banjos I've just repainted by hand in situ, cheap and nasty solution.
Mine is rusting too, is there an after market option? Is it the same part as on the Vtec? I replaced it when I had mine and it was just over £100

Yeah, I figure I'll make a batch of them if I make any. So far, though, I don't mind it missing. My right ankle gets a bit warmer at stop lights. We'll see if I continue not to mind during the hot summer.

Just checked mine, no sign of any corrosion inside or out. Mine is exactly the same age as yours from October 2014 so two and a half years, three English winters of salted roads and gravel and it's fine.
Will need to check mine when I next get to see her, sometime next week.
